Sightings of a new Wartburg football player in Waverly this morning.  This one is a DE.  Word is he will be quite an impact player for the Knights.

His name is Ben.  Coach Willis can't pencil him into the two deeps quite yet.

He was just born this morning at the Waverly Hospital and his 8.5 pound frame probably needs a little bulking up before he takes the field.

(The Warthog family grows again.)

Congrats Warthog.  Nothing better than a new little one in the family.  Hope he grows and listens to his dad.  He will do well.

DutchFan2004: Listening to his dad might be OK, but I'm sure you know the real gems of wisdom come from grandpa.

All this mention of Beer of the past makes me want to ask:

doolittledog ... was Dubuque Star beer and Potosi beer still around when you were on campus?
Anyone else remember any now extinct beer?

GO SPARTANS!
A few "excellent" beers come to mind from my days @ the Wart (these were our beer(s) of choice when trying to save a buck or two:
Falstaff - riddle on the cap (they got more difficult as the night went on) - the deposit on the yellow crate cost more than the beer
Beer & Light Beer - I believe it was brewed by Falstaff as well - I think one can was white & the other a grey/silver color
Schmidt - Big mouth bottles - not "extinct"

In my day at The Wart the real gagger was Foxhead.  We had to make a run to the Minnesota boarder to get it, but it had all the qualities of a fine college beer. --- It was cheap.

I remember generic beer.  It was a long time ago but all I remember was the white can with "BEER" in black letters.  Even back in that day I thought alcoholic beverages required more labeling than that.  For awhile the cheapest stuff around Chicago was Red White and Blue.  I could only buy it in bottles by the case and I had to pay a deposit on the bottles except that I was always returning a case so it worked out.  The worst beers I ever drank came in novelty cans, and I expect was really old or had gotten really hot somewhere or had otherwise been somehow mis-handled.  There was Three Stooges Beer, and some sort of Harley Davidson Commemorative beer.  And no one who ever drank it will forget Billy Beer.  Man I'm getting thirsty.

I remember drinking Pabst Extra Light while just not quite being old enough to drink.  The only reason we drank that was because the commercials always showed some hot thing in a bikini.  :o
Win or lose we still booze!!

When my family still lived in St. Louis, so late 70's to early early 80's, our neighbor would drink a case of plain label "beer" in the white can with black letters every saturday.  By late afternoon his speech would start to slur, but he would finish it off.

While at Dubuque we were Leinies fans and there was a brewery out of Shellsburg, WI I think that we drank quite a bit of.  If I remember correctly, when we would buy kegs we were cheap so I want to say it was Keystone Light or something like that for our keg parties.

The good thing for me right now is the Broad Street Brewery...conveniently located across the street from my office...opens in 1 hour.  I will get to drink a cold one while I finish up my last report for the day ;)

I'm getting anxious to take a look at the new rosters that will come out in a few weeks.  Then we can argue over who got who, in-state vs out-of-state recruiting, who has the best class...all that sort of fun.

Will this site have their "kick-off" again this year?  I don't remember seeing anything about it?  But I am forgetfull!!!

I remember the RW&B beer(had to drink a couple quick to get use to the taste)! Speaking of beer & Chicago. Had a couple of end of summer road trips to the windy city while in college (Cubbies/Rush St, etc). Being broke college students, throughout the summer we were able to buy Old Style pretty cheap & it wasn't bad (our "working" friends would give us crap for drinking it). So we get to the Cubs game & one of the first things we hear is "Hey Old Style - Old Style Here". My buddies & I being big Cubbie fans became Old Style drinkers for awhile after that. When we got home from the road trip, we had to advise our "working" friends that if Old Style is served @ Wrigley, you know it must be good beer!!...I think I will have to copy DD today. Just got a call from a buddy, he said it is almost beerthirty!

I was wondering when or if Old Style was going to get brought into this topic.  I grew up drinking OS as that is all my dad had in the fridge.  In college, I learned real quick that Old Style was a hidden gem.  At parties, if the fridge or coolers were stocked, anybody grabbed what they could.  Unless it was Old Style.  Nobody would touch it.  So I rarely had to worry about my beer getting drank.  The only down fall to Old Style is that I can't get it out here in Southeast Ohio.  I did find it in Pittsburgh, but my family always stocks me up when they come and visit.  And yes, Old Style is actually pretty good.

Bird Dog

Just got back from Colorado and was catching up on the posts.  Three friends of mine rented a house together in Mason City.  In real estate they say the three most important things are location, location, and location.   The location of this  house, was next door to the  manager of the Blatz Distributorship.  They were able to buy deeply discounted kegs for their parties.  Guests would  wince of the first glass, by the the third glass they would comment on how good it was.

Pursuant to the recommendation of several distinguished contributors to this site my sister and I  ate at the Dog House the other day.  A late lunch at 4:30 pm.  There was about 10 people when we came in.  At 5:00 nine got up and left.  My sister and I concluded that they were not working but on the clock and the work day was over and left.

Knowing the culture of Dubuque...they were probably on their way to start their work shift ;D

The Dog House  is held in high esteem more out of nostalgia than actual merit.  It was our college hang out.  Last year at Homecoming we noticed that nothing of the decor had changed in there since we had been in school.  Makes for extra profits I guess.

My Dog House story is way back in the day, on friday afternoons my friends would announce we were off to do laundry.  Which meant we were headed to the Dog House for a burger basket, beer, and darts.  I worked evenings delivering pizza's and my boss kept the Dog House ph# in his office so he could call there if I was late (pre-cell phone era).  The bartender would yell at me that it was time to go to work and off I went.  That was more acceptable back in those days, not so much now.

Football related :  The Iowa transfer that is headed for Central...they start Aug. 9th...could play QB or WR, he will try both, he just wants to see the field and will take whichever gives him the best shot at that.

Nobody touched your Old Style because they were busy stealing the frozen pizzas from our apt.

That reminds me of a story from my sister-in-law. Her hubby would usually golf Sat mornings & then meet up with some buddies for a couple of cocktails @ a cigar bar named The Office (not sure if that is official). @ a get together s-i-l was talking to a friend of my b-i-l & just made the comment that "Jim" always seemed to get lunch & then take a nap when he got home from the office on Sat(s). The friend responded that Jim is just getting old & can't play golf & have a couple of toddies without getting tired. My s-i-l gave him a puzzled look and said Jim was @ the office & being a partner, doubted he would partake there. The friend about lost it telling her that the office was actually a cigar bar. My b-i-l wasn't trying to hide anything as he thought his wife knew as they used to have a lunch & a couple after golf @ the CC. A buddy opened up the cigar place & they figured they would give him some business. Story comes up now & then during family gatherings & we still get a chuckle out of it!!

Football question here.  My mind starts to wander during my long drives...

The half, or a game, is not supposed to end with a defensive penalty.  So, if the game is tied, with Team A attempting the game winning FG and the attempt is blocked and then scooped up by Team B, who then returns it all the way to the 5 but gets tackled before scoring a touchdown...but Team A was flagged for a penalty while Team B had the ball...is that a defensive penalty and Team B would get to play an untimed down to end the game???

KICKIN95

I don't think the kicking team (offense) would be considered the "defensive" side until the ball was downed and the chains were moved so it would essentially be an offensive penalty.

I understand your point but I think in this day and age the football revenue is what drives the athletic budget so I think that is the reason for the 60 million fine.  That has to hurt the whole university's budget don't you think?

I don't think it's going to hurt it all that much.  The plan is to pay it off in five installments of $12 million each year so they won't have to take the whole hit in a single year.  I would think that given the loyalty of their alumni they will be able to raise that much relatively easily.  There will be some impact on the university but I just don't think it will be as dire as some might think.

I wasn't aware of that provision.  I agree that if it is 12 mil a year they will get some rich boosters to foot the bill.
