Congratulations to occasional D3 poster, Dave Devine, for his election to the Wartburg Athletic Hall of Fame.  His induction will take place on homecoming weekend.

any new information on upcoming scrimmages?  when and where?

I'm liking what I see on the Dubuque webpage.  Some good in-coming players...at least on paper.  As usual, we will see on the grid iron how things shake out.  51 freshmen and they are still adding to the page.  Some very interesting transfers as well!!!

Well I can't believe no one has said anything yet, but how did dubuque pull the Va. Tech transfer....he could wreak havoc in the IIAC. Looked to be pretty athletic even by D1 standards. What's his story? He was at one point a 4 star recruit...given this news and some other news I heard through the grapevine that returning 1st team IIAC LB and all-American candidate from Central may not be healthy to play this season I think the standings have to look like:

1) Dubuque
2A) Wartburg
2B) Coe
4) Central
5) Simpson
6,7,8 who cares

Two words: East...Dubuque  ;D

Sounds like he had a hard time transitioning from high school safety to college LB.  Dubuque is bringing in 3 freshmen from his area of VA, so I'm guessing UD has a contact down there spreading the word.  He will get to play safety at UD and maybe he can find his love for the game again.  All while spending time at a great school.  He is also listed as S/WR...remind anyone of a former Iowa transfer to UD from a few years ago...Walner Belleus???

As of now...and it can be a fluid situation...UD is showing 86 freshmen on the roster.

45 - Illinois
21 - Wisconsin
7   - Iowa
3   - California
3   - Virginia
2   - Arizona
2   - Maryland
1   - Indiana
1   - Nevada
1   - Sweden (a QB)

Considering he had quite a few D1AA schools offering him full rides once he asked for his release from VA TECH, I doubt it. Actually, rumors I heard VA Tech was going to block his transfer to any college in their conference; he would have to sit out a year unless he played D3; he was playing out of position at VA TECH. As Doolittle mentioned, the "buddy" package. At UD, back to his natural position and he wanted to play for the best, not 2nd best  :P

Willie and I and some other old timers can probably respect this more than some young-ens out there but UD is bringing in some kids that were 1st team all-state in high school and they aren't even showing up on the 3-deeps.  That is mind boggling to me.  Though yes, we have yet to play a down yet, I am feeling good about what I am seeing right now.

While Dubuque is close to both, I'm amazed at the degree of discrepancy among Illinois (up against the CCIW, and others) and Wisconsin (up against the WIAC and others) versus Iowa.  Has UD simply ceded Iowa to other IIAC teams??!!  Or is there something else going on?

A few factors....1.) IL and WI are just as close as Iowa and closer for many of these kids considering Dubuque's location on the border of 3 states; 2.) There are MANY more areas to recruit in IL & WI (population wise) within a close proximity to campus; 3.) The coaching staff has a lot of ties in IL & WI; 4.) Still erasing years of not recruiting Iowa heavily from pre Zweifel era.; 5.) Most of all, do what it takes to win and if that means Wi & IL, so be it. The stands are still packed every home and away game  ;)

PS- If you have hopes of beating the best (UWW & North Central), then you have to recruit against them to get the best.

doolittledog

Willie said it well...

Dubuque is on the border with Illinois and Wisconsin.  Dubuque is closer to Milwaukee, WI (172 miles) and Chicago, IL (178 miles) than it is to Des Moines, IA (200 miles)  IA/IL/WI should all really be considered "in-state" for Dubuque.

The UD coaching staff has ties to those areas...might as well mine them.

Previous UD coaching staffs did not even try to recruit Iowa.  That is changing.  Our last 2 starting QB's were 1st team all-state QB's from Iowa.  The word is getting out and you will see more and more Iowa kids heading to UD soon.

Mr. Ypsi

Thanks, guys.  As a Peoria native (though gone more than 4 decades ago ;)), I'm well aware that Dubuque is 'virtually' in both Illinois and Wisconsin (and at least as close to the population center in each of the latter); I was just struck by the degree of the discrepancy.  6.5 TIMES as many from Illinois?  3 TIMES as many from Wisconsin?  Just seemed a bit out of whack.
