Anyone have a sense of how large the Norse roster is?

Luther's 2012 roster <here>

Another season of having a roster in the 80s?  The overall roster size and depth of talent felt better during the Hefty era.  Recruiting classes used to be around 40 freshmen, but the last few years seem to be more like 25.

Maybe Dubuque can spare 15 or 20 freshmen. ;)

The Iowa Conference waited until friday afternoon, but here is their football season preview and coaches poll.

http://www.iowaconference.com/news/2012/8/17/FB_0817122634.aspx

Rank    School (1st place votes)    Points    2011 Record
1    Dubuque (6)    52    9-2, 7-1 IIAC
2    Wartburg            48    8-2, 6-2 IIAC
3    Simpson (1)    41    5-5, 5-3 IIAC
4    Central (1)            40    7-3, 6-2 IIAC
5    Coe                    39    6-4, 6-2 IIAC
6    Buena Vista    23    2-8, 2-6 IIAC
7    Luther            22    3-7, 3-5 IIAC
8    Loras            15    1-9, 0-8 IIAC

Let the outrage, the what the hecks, and what were they thinkings commence...

It was a close vote, but when was the last time Coe was 5th in the preseason poll?

The bottom three clearly finished behind the top five.

I could be wrong (it does happen every blue moon), but I think UD was picked 7th last year in the preseason polls. Hence, I don't put much stock in it. It's obvious there are some political agenda's at work as with everything else to some degree in conference "voting".

Obviously, we should all just save everyone a lot of time and just award Dubuque the conference title and a semi-final spot in the playoffs. I'm sure the 85+ freshmen they have in camp could finish second. Then we could all go and watch soccer.

If you guys want to give them the IIAC crown go right ahead. But I think they're a ways away from a run to the semis. I think there's a few WIAC, MIAC, NWC, etc. teams that might have a thing or two to say about that  ;)

Oh, ye of small mind! You cannot avoid the Spartan juggernaut! After they destroy the D3 division in December, they will replace the entire starting lineup of the Green Bay Packers and win the Super Bowl. I mean jeez, one of the 2 best players in D1 transferred to that slice of heaven on earth. What are you thinking?!?!

True friggin story...after that embarrassment last year by what was, IMHO, a better DBQ, in the 1st round, there shouldn't be any IIAC team thinking of any playoff run at this point.

NewKnightDad

Some of the teams in the IIAC had a defense last year and in my opinion would have given a better showing than UD.

Go ahead and rip away!!!  ;)

Don't give up TWO 17 point 2nd half leads at home and you would have been in the playoffs ;D ;D ;D

Wasn't the last time Central was this low in the pre-season coaches poll back in 2005?  All they did was win the conference championship in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2009.  Beware the Dutch!

This is going to be a lot more fun now that I don't have anyone playing anymore.

Nothing more true has ever been spoken by anyone who writes here than those words printed by doolittledog.  You can't take a three possession lead and start playing not to lose rather than playing to win.  The Orange and Black can only look in the mirror and blame themselves.

How many teams had a scrimmage this past Saturday?  Did anyone attend?  How did teams look with just over a week of practice?

Dubuque scrimmages UW-Osh Kosh thursday.  They were nice enough to post on their website when and where everything is happening so you Wartburg types can stop in and get a Spartan preview before your "entertainment consultant" recruiting trip to East Dubuque takes place ;)

... when was the last D1 transfer that didn't pan out? Central had a couple in '05 or '06 that tore it up, Walner belleus was obviously very good despite some comments here, Nate Snead actually played at Drake before Central, who else

How'd Wartburg's UNI transfer fare?

DBQ1965

Given the way the Va Tech -UD transfer item took on a life of its own with a myriad of perspectives ... its clear we need IIAC teams to start playing ... and the sooner the better.

GO SPARTANS!

The Kohawks were picked for 7th in 2010. Things seemed to work out pretty well that year.

Needless to say, I've heard the boys are loving the fifth place prediction.
