I don't know how many of you were in these locker rooms at some point, but I was and I will tell you, for a fact, the team I played for was not influenced in the slightest by preseason rankings. In season rankings? Hell yes, we're not stupid and we know when we put 50 on a team we will jump up higher than if we dropped 21, and we all were very aware about mid-season rankings and, more importantly, the regional rankings, but to think these players in camp are influenced at all by the preseason rankings is just asinine. The only reason we checked these boards at this point was for some cheap entertainment from you posters, which I will now be a part of.
I too was in the locker room (well before this site was established ;D)& as I stated prior (which was true even back then), kids are "influenced" in different ways. I wasn't necessarily talking about preseason, just in general. Since I am not in every camp, I can not say nor can anyone how someone else feels about rankings, etc. While not a preseason ranking, I think the LND unified & motivated the Linfield crew for the season.

If, at any point, you weren't motivated to work harder after being snubbed or disrespected, then you might want to change your field of endeavour. Even though your personal confidence may not care what someone else thinks, they have a reason for thinking it, and if you think they are wrong you have to prove them wrong. Otherwise, go play intramural.

And if you can't find the means to motivate yourself from within, and need someone to disrespect you before you accomplish something, or work harder, then you need to change your field of endeavor ...

I guess you aren't picking up on what I'm saying:
No matter how hard you think you are working, if someone or something implying that you aren't good enough doesn't make you work harder, then maybe you should look up complacency in the dictionary. It might make the difference between first place and third place. It definetly makes the difference between first and second.

How is it complacent to be a self-motivator? Why do companies routinely seek out highly motivated employees for their workforce? Using your logic, managers should be questioning their subordinate's abilities in order to get the most out of them, but that's not the case, I wonder why.

Perhaps you should be the one opening a dictionary. Complacency is being satisfied where you are at and not having the motivation to continue to grow and climb. The argument could be made that those who work harder when they are called out or "dis-respected" are complacent because they aren't working up to their potential (being complacent) until someone calls them on it.

You saying that no matter how hard we work, someone implying we're not good enough will make you work harder is simply wrong. That may be how you're wired, but it's not how I, or my team, was wired.

PS, "endeavour" is correct spelling the same way colour is correct spelling....that may fly in England, but this is 'Merica and in 'Merica we say "endeavor"...just a pet peeve of mine.

With the good banter going on preseason, I can't wait until the season starts!!............. With the Knights opening up @ night & over the labor day weekend, I have been informed (by #2 son) that he & some of the boys from last year will be in town for the tailgate/game. I guess this means that Hotel WK will be open for business in a couple of weeks (which my wife & always enjoy)! It will be weird watching the game without seeing a couple of the boys on the field.

I always get nervous when people start getting busted for spelling and gramour.  I for one am happy to see rankings and lists and all.  Everyone agrees they are meaningless and everyone does it just because everyone has always done it and it is a good thing to put in a press release and maybe drum up some interest.  I can't speak to what goes on in players' heads but, as a fan, I am more interested to see my team play some one ranked close to them rather than someone who the "experts" say they should blow out or don't have a chance against.

Ditto!!

I am four sure not going to spend alot of time cheking my spelling or gramer.
The polls, etc just give us "experts" meaningless things to talk about.
Regarding players' heads; what goes on in one, will be the opposite in another.

I think we can all agree that different people are motivated in different ways.

If anyone has seen me you would know that I'm motivated by bacon. MMMMMMMMMMM

I dont care about grammar...it just bugs me when people use English words in our country.

I agree.  Didn't we fight a war over that a couple hundred years ago?

You know, a few years ago we brought the French into this conversation with our Blue/Bleu cheeseburger basket talk.

Where do you stand there???

notlongago

Hmm...if we're stateside then I gotta go with blue, but if i'm in france I'd probably have to go bleu while im there (then again, france would be the last western European country I would visit, so I probably will never have to worry about that haha)
