When did Northwestern do that?!? I think you've got your facts mixed up.

And Central already did pretty much just that when they dumped their last HC if I'm not mistaken.

There were a number of Northwestern FANS calling for Orv Ottens head because of 3 straight seasons of 7-3, 3rd place conference finishes, and no playoff appearances during that stretch.  Never mind his history with the program and the heights he had taken the program.  When he did leave, for reasons never really explained, there were a number of them (at least on their message board) that were happy to see him leave.  Of course, with the new coach it's pretty much the same thing, but they seem happy so far.

The playoff 'drought' - if you can call 3 years a drought - had little to do with the ouster. It was off-field issues that drove it. Now, if Orv had gone 10-0 or made the playoffs it might have taken longer, but his ouster had more to do with the behavior of student-athletes, some closely related to him. The reasons may not have been explained publicly, but those close to the program knew very clearly why he was gone. They were also missing the playoffs during a stretch where USF was dominating the GPAC, NAIA and the likes of UND.

Kyle Achterhoff is a totally different story. He's got strong ties to the program - even deeper than Otten - but has a personal philosophy and character more in keeping with the direction of the college. Whether he can return them to the caliber of perennial national contender that Bub Korver had them at remains to be seen. But he's a solid guy and the athletic department and alumni are confident he'll build the program the right way. Interestingly, there's talk that this years team should be very solid, so we'll see really soon if they are taking steps in the right direction athletically.

I'm saying the "fans" were unhappy and calling (at least on the message board) for his ouster.  Not that the school ousted him for that reason.

There was talk about the off the field issues on there and how that was "probably" the reason he was let go.  There were also many so-called fans that were happy he was gone.  All because of the so-called playoff drought.  They were acting like it was a catastrophe that 3 seasons had gone without a playoff berth.

Gotcha. And 3 years without a title is a long time for Dutch pride to simmer!  ;)

Speaking of Dutch.  My wife had never heard of Dutch Letters before today.  This has her eagerly anticipating our trip to Pella later this fall ;D

Thinking of food takes some of the sting away from watching our defending 3A state champs lose their 1st game of the season as a 2A school.  A botched field goal attempt at the end of the 1st half...fumbled away the ball at the one yard line on a punt...used up all 3 time outs in the 3rd quarter led to the game winning FG as time expired by Center Point-Urbana.

Sorry doolittledog had to watch an early season defeat of his local lads.

I on the other hand got to watch a 41-31 victory for Muscatine over Davenport Central.  The Muskies need to make some improvements before taking on Bettendorf and the other big boys in the league.  Three lost fumbles, giving up two kickoff returns to the house, and some ball handling miscues almost spelled disaster.  Good thing MHS opened against a team they could beat even with a few errors.

The most interesting thing of the night was the power outage at Brady Street Stadium with 4:21 left in the first half.  There were no lights for a half hour.  When they came back on it was decided to send the teams to the locker rooms for  15 minutes.  The Davenport Central Blue Devil band came out and did their halftime and the teams came back on the field.  They then played the last 4:21 of the first half, took a  3 or 4 minute "half time',  and started 2nd half right away.  It was interesting to say the least.

When in Pella I go Jarsma Bakery for dutch letters and then Urlich butcher shop for free samples.  Why, because my wife stopped in between at Brown's Shoe Fit Co. store and their darn perpetual sale. Noticed that Urlich's has an store that sells their products in Mesa Arizona.  Is AZdutchman involved in this conspiracy to allow these meats to addict the state of Arizona.

If you are traveling light on the tailgating Urlich's makes some great in store sandwiches to your specifications.

The only conspiracy that I may have been involved with was to bring all the bakery goods from Jarsma's to Arizona. The only problem we ran into was the bakery that we wanted to share with others here in Arizona didn't make it. We at them all on the drive back.

I was able to watch the preseason game/scrimmage with William Penn. I think we're going to have a great year. There are many players ready to play hard and fill the spots of the graduated seniors from last year.
The game started rough, but they started getting their rhythm after the first quarter. I liked seeing the level of excitement and anticipation of the players getting on and off the field. There were some good hits (from both sides). The passing game was a little out of sink, but there were some highlights to focus on. What I noticed in the running game was their ability to run straight up the field. My son is part of the O line and everyone on the line is ready to play in the position needed for the team. I seen some missed assignments by the defense. That does need some work, but work/practice is something that the team is definitely taking care of.

As doolittledog mentioned....One week, ladies and gentlemen. One week!  ;D

Make sure you make to the bakery to get some treats.  It is truly worth the trip there.

Perhaps no other team in the IIAC has more question marks than the Dutch, and, sticking to his ways, Coach MacMartin has actually seemed to raise more questions than he answers in the Dutch's press release....

http://www.central.edu/athletics/story.cfm?StoryID=4228

Mind games that would make Hayden Fry proud.  "Whoa is me, it will be a long year for us Central coaches and players"  Then they run off a string of wins.  I don't think I'm buying it.

As wartknight says...A 6-1, 295lb QB  :o  That's either a typo, or he'll put a hurtin' to many an opposing defender this year.

Though the Dutch could be in for a down year by their standards.  Will Central Dutch fans be like Northwestern Raiders fans and demand a coaching change if they go 3 seasons without a playoff appearance???

When did Northwestern do that?!? I think you've got your facts mixed up.

For the record the won loss record had nothing to do with the coach leaving.

Most people get dutch letters at Jarsma's.  If you like the dutch letters try an Almond Blonket which is a dutch letter on steroids.

Spending sunday at the office leads my mind to wander.  Which led me to find a picture of Wartburg fans practicing their tailgating skills one week before the season.

Not to be out done...Central fans are eagerly anticipating football season as well.

It's unclear what Loras fan is looking forward to...

I'm pretty sure I know what Dubuque fans are thinking about...

Ok, time to get back to work.
