My opinion is that it is too early to tell if there has been a shift in the top three.  There have been years (in the last ten) that Central and Coe have been out of the top 4 but never Wartburg does that mean there is a shift here?  It is simply too early to extract that conclusion from the data that we have.  You can't go by one year cause there is always a fluke or two every year.  No disrespect meant by the term fluke.  Bottom line is you have to have hard terms and definitions used to ascertain your results.  I think UD is making a good case to be mentioned when talking about the IIAC AQ.  They have earned it and deserve it!  If you want to say that there has been a shift in the "BIG 3" there just isn't enough data to make that claim yet.  If UD get the AQ this year we may possibly entertain that thought then again depends on where or how the other teams finish do we say that the "BIG 3" is now the 'BIG 4"?

Wow! I've never seem so many words fly after the first game of the season. Why don't we wait until the middle of the season to start wondering who is or isn't a top tier program? So far, everyone is tied for 1st in conference.

Had the opportunity to talk to a Knight coaching staff and in spite of the score they aren't saying everything is unicorns and glitter in Waverly. Lots of things to work on before Saturday.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

NewKnightDad

I agree and I sat and watched the game. If the Knight players come out too high on themselves Saturday they will be brought back down to earth very quickly.

There are alot of things that need improving in one week and we all know how well that normally works out.
Win or lose we still booze!!

DF2K4 and I could talk stats on here all day...it's not enough to deal with them just at work ;D

As Mark Twain said...There are lies, damn lies, and statistics

The IIAC went through about a 2 decade period where some version of 3 schools would typically finish in the top 3 each year and only those 3 schools would win conference titles.  We could go back to a period like the 70's where a team might be 2-5 one year and conference champ the next and see a large rotation of schools climbing to the mountain top only to fall back down again quickly.  The thing is, you need a few years of data to accurately see any trends.  If Central goes 5-5 this year while Dubuque wins another conference title it would still be too soon to accurately say Central is out and Dubuque in for the conference heirarchy.

There is too much data you need to swim through...coaching changes, administrative support, on and on and on.  A school needs good coaching and administrative support.  One without the other won't lead to a winning football team.  Maybe all 8 schools get both, I'm not sure what would happen then.  I'm not sure a successful football program is important to every school in our conference.  If it were, Luther would be dominating the conference.  The Norse already win all-sports trophies.  They have one of the largest endowments, nice faciliites, large enrollment.  I'm rambling now.  Time to shut down.

I'm not even sure if I am following all of that...and I wrote it :o

DD,

I agree with you and that is what I was trying to say.

I have not predicted other than preseason about where the teams will be in the IIAC this year and I agree it is way to early to draw any conclusions about the season and where the teams will line up.  I have not even looked at the conference schedule to see when the teams play each other.  I am on the record and maintain I think this will be the most unpredictable season in a long time.

It's Coe-Cornell week! Sadly, I won't be able to attend. I had a friend e-mail this to me from the game all Defensive Coordinators wish to forget.

Offense AND defense for you???

I never thought we'd put up 63 points and end up unhappy. I heard Raeburn threw the game tape out and refused to watch it.

Where's coocoo? He usually has some halfway decent joke that he's been using since the 80s.

I saw Hazzben's question about a video feed from Wartburg, but didn't see any answers yet...does anyone know if video will be available Saturday?

All I've been able to find is a link to live stats, but this is through Bethel.

From what I can tell, it doesn't look like Wartburg has video. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Like notlongago said, not always the best.  Sometimes there is audio, sometimes not.  Sometimes the camera operator follows the plays, other time it sits still for a number of plays in a row.

From the Wartburg web-site:

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- Wartburg kicker, freshman Frank Laconti (Lombard, Ill.) was named the Iowa Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Laconti accounted for 13 points in Wartburg's 73-0 shutout of MacMurray Saturday. He set the Wartburg single-game record for PAT kicks with 10 and added a 36-yard field goal.
This marks the first IIAC weekly honor of Laconti's career.
The Knights set single-game school records for points (73) and fewest yards allowed (minus-5) in the contest.

Since he is a freshman and this was the Knights first game, it seems as though the highlighted sentence might not have been an important item to disclose.
