From the Wartburg web-site:

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa-- Wartburg kicker, freshman Frank Laconti (Lombard, Ill.) was named the Iowa Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Laconti accounted for 13 points in Wartburg's 73-0 shutout of MacMurray Saturday. He set the Wartburg single-game record for PAT kicks with 10 and added a 36-yard field goal.
This marks the first IIAC weekly honor of Laconti's career.
The Knights set single-game school records for points (73) and fewest yards allowed (minus-5) in the contest.

Since he is a freshman and this was the Knights first game, it seems as though the highlighted sentence might not have been an important item to disclose.

Not that many people care about a "kicker battle", but it will be interesting to see him and Sheldon go back and forth this year....hopefully the Dutch O can give Sheldon his kicks.

I about fell out of my seat on that one. Great show!! When I first watched I thought never again, but it definitely grows on you.

72 and sunny tomorrow.  Anxious for week 2 to get started.  Tomorrow should answer some more questions we have for our conference.

Especially when you're averaging 73 pts and giving up negative 5 yards on defense haha

The 73 points and -5 yards says something about Wartburg, but probably a lot more about how dreadful their opponent was. That's no knock on the Knights. I just think a team playing in one of the worst conferences that has a history of being 2-8, 1-9 or 0-10 just doesn't tell you much about the team that blows them out. I'm thinking the same thing about Oklahoma State from last week.

As for not being favored at home...Here's one Bethel fan who's nervous.

I picked Wartburg in the MIAC pickems. Not that I'm predicting they'll win or that Bethel will lose, but I do think they'll cover being almost a 10 point underdog. They are a tradition rich, well coached team. They play well at home. They've got a game under their belts. They know how to win close games and they've seen plenty of very good teams over the years.

I hope people are accurate in their confidence in Bethel. But I'm expecting a close fought game on Saturday. We know Wartburg will be prepared.

I'm also hoping this could become a more regular thing. I love good match-ups like this in the non-con. Not necessarily as a first game, mind you, but it's a great cross state matchup that has relatively easy travel arrangements for both the teams and fan bases.

Great to hear about his progress!

QuoteIn the meantime, Norton will be practicing his pitch. "With the whole injury
process, each day can be different in terms of how I'm throwing the ball. Honestly, I'm just worried about getting the ball somewhat toward the catcher," he jokes, "and I hope the fans in the bleachers won't be too hard on me."

I'm thinking he gets a loud ovation no matter where the ball goes. If anyone around me booed someone recovering from paralysis they'd probably have to get security to escort me out of the stadium  >:(

I really hope you're right...and I also hope they fully explain his story before the pitch.....but we all know how ridiculous drunken fans can be....

Being picked as the Top 25 most likely to get upset does as well in the triple take

Looks like we've got divided ideas on how this game will go...probably means we're gonna get a good one

These college pranks have to stop.

Apparently during today's early morning thunder and lightning storm, some rascals from Coe went over to Cornell and set fire to the bell tower.

In a serious note, Cornell is very fortunate that the lightning strike caused minmal damage.  An old building like that is generally vulnerable to huge fires under those circumstances.  Perhaps the bell that was melted served as a lightning rod.

Ready for week 2! I know Central may want to put game 1 behind them, but I don't think they should. I believe there is such a thing as a good loss. I also believe that the most powerful weapon that a player/team can have on the field is their mind. So, it all depends on how they take last weeks beating. I'm hoping that they'll never want to go through something like that again and remember the bitter taste of that loss.

I know many have mentioned that mid season for their teams will show a better outlook to the end of the season. I think Centrals game 2 is probably one of the most important games of the season. Another loss, especially a bad one, could possible put a majority of the players on the team in the mindset that this season could be a bad one. It would be a hard hurdle for the coaches to rally all the players on the team to get them all on the same page of winning.

Coach McMartin would probably say....."Lets just take this one game at a time".
So, I'll be rooting and hollering for a win in week 2!
