What a gutsy win by the Dutch. Somewhat sloppy on both teams so I guess that evened out. Some boneheaded plays on both sides as well (Dbq returner stepping out at the 2). It was awesome to see a completely injury riddled defense step up with 4 takeaways ....very impressive game by guys that had to step up last minute. How the Dutch overcame those defensive injuries vs a team that was supposed to have to some real fire power was great! And they hit like. Mac truck today as well....love that brand of football even if it does occasionally come at the cost of a bogus penalty.

The players on both sides seemed pretty well behaved as far as keeping it between the whistles but someone on the Dbq staff had many profane comments that could be heard over a hundred yards away...surprised they do that.

As far as the QB situation. It doesn't sound like much is solved based on the "sideline chatter" which I tend to believe as it was evident by having Danny Samson (former hs QB and current 255lb d end) taking snaps in power running formations, the Dutch would have loved to have boerm play his slot/utility position and rotate flarhety and eisler, but eisler unable to play thorted those plans....in the end it worked out as the Dbq defense was like Swiss cheese vs the run which is right in brendons wheelhouse. He did miss a couple fairly wide open receivers in or near the end zone but as we can see the good guys came out on top so alls well that ends well

Sorry I didn't see DD and the Mrs. at the game, I was the one in the red and white shirt, don't know how they missed me.   :D  Glad we have that game over with.  Simpson just got a whole lot bigger than I expected.  Bit I don't know that they expected us to win either.  Saw Joyce Schipper at the game, she said it was a completely different team than she saw in Michigan last week.  Thank heavens!

If only I wasn't color blind I would have found you ;D

At halftime my family had the pleasure of meeting Dutchfan1 and her boyfriend as they came over to the visitor side and sat with us for the 2nd half.  They are a very nice couple.

As for the game, it was fun to see both starting quarterbacks come from Traer, IA...average class size of about 35 that has produced some great football players...and my wifes alma mater.  For Dubuque to give up 4 interceptions, including 2 in the red zone and 1 of those returned 94 yards for a pick 6 it was amazing Dubuque had a chance to tie with a hail mary at the end of the game.  Dubuque is a better team that their 1-3 record shows.  Hopefully, they start to show some of their potential soon.

This was our first trip to Pella, and I must say the most polite and quiet crowd I have ever seen.  The only Central fans wooping it up while tailgating were the Boerm kids family (and they have Wartburg/Hawkeye/Dubuque roots)  Some Central kids parked next to our van and asked us if it was ok for them to park next to us...that got a chuckle out of my wife.  Our visit to Jaarsma's aftewards for Dutch letters and other assorted sugary goodness helped make our long drive home a little easier to take.

On to next week.

This was your first trip to Pella?  Hope you make it a regular every other year visit at least.  The Dutch letters and other goodies alone make that worthwhile.  You are correct that UD is better than their record shows, or it really shows how much both teams have slipped.  With Hanus at QB, I never felt like they couldn't strike at any time.  We would hold you for 3 downs, then give up a huge play on 4th down to keep the threat alive, but the Dutch did a good job of responding when things got serious.  UD will win some of the tough games this year and Coe is the only team I see as a true threat to finish the conference undefeated, much as I hate to say it.

WB losing really surprised me.  I know Simpson has been playing better, but I just didn't see that one coming.  Is Simpson really better or has WB also slipped?  If memory serves, this is 2 losses in a row, even if there was an extra week in between.  Another blow to the "Willis doesn't lose two in a row" belief.  Not trying to rub salt here, we sure can't brag on our season so far. Just wondering if Coe is becoming the new conference power of late or have they just not played anyone that competitive yet?  As a Dutch fan, it's hard to see anyone other than Central as the conference power, tradition like that breeds a certain amount of expectation/arrogance regarding that.  Would love to see the changes that took place today, whether the originally hoped for players or not, develop as the season progresses.  But one game does not a winning season make.  Next week will be a really telling game with much more riding on it than most years.  Kick off the Simpson jokes guys, there is something extra at stake this year.

Central picks off IIAC Champs...

http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_62bc39d2-8955-5666-a6de-cda99ac8008d.html

From the article...

Going in for the win in a wild game, the University of Dubuque left the Central red zone with its Iowa Conference title hopes in peril in Week 1 of the IIAC season.

Cornerback Spencer Boeyink returned a Wyatt Hanus fourth-quarter interception 94 yards for a touchdown and the difference in the Dutch's 31-24 victory over the reigning league champions in Pella, Iowa.

Tied at 24 and driving for the winning score with 6:29 left, Dubuque (1-3, 0-1 IIAC) saw Boeyink turn the game with a 94-yard Pick-6. Kevin Sheldon's extra point gave the Dutch (2-2, 1-0) the lead and UD lost a game in which it outgained its opponent, 537-253.

Hanus, pick free entering the game, was intercepted four times in a huge 37-for-61, 412-yard, two-touchdown throwing show. Kyle Acker delivered 135 yards and a 2-yard touchdown run and Austin Morgan tied Michael Zweifel's UD single-game reception record with a 21-catch, 221-yard performance. But it wasn't enough to prevent UD's third straight loss.

Loras answers adversity

http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_36fd84f0-1c8a-5bc3-84d1-89cf96cc45be.html

From the article...

Mierkiewicz is a realist. This is one game over a winless foe, but it's a great place for Loras to start the IIAC season.

"There's an incredibly long road to go," Mierkiewicz said, "but we're 1-0 in conference, and it feels pretty good."

Anonymous donor gives $12million to UD towards the endowment.

http://www.thonline.com/news/tri-state/article_2fd16d29-0c0a-54dd-8ce0-da2f120b5472.html

From the article...

An anonymous donor has given $12 million to the University of Dubuque's endowment fund, and annual returns on the investment will be used to offset tuition costs.  In a statement, the donor reflected on being the first individual in his family to have the opportunity for both a high school and college education, and many people supported that graduation dream.

"Students often have to look at what costs less rather than the way it should be and looking at the programs you offer and what best fits their needs," said Tim Kremer, UD's dean of student financial planning and scholarships.

Kremer said the university has not decided how it will divvy up the funds, but he explained the annual return on investment of $12 million at 4 percent, for instance, could provide 48 students with $10,000 each.

It is two losses in a row to Simpson but not two losses in a row this season.  WB beat Carthage before the off week.

Texting with one of the parents after the game as I did not make the trip to Indianola he said there was not much room to run for the backs yesterday.

WB does not have the ability to be a pass oriented team this year so they are going to have to figure out the o-line and get the ground game going.  Maybe time to shelve the pistol and go back to an I formation?

Special team issues are going to kill WB also so they need to get them figured out.  Two years in a row Simpson blocks an extra point to seal the victory.

WOW!!!  :o
Win or lose we still booze!!

Couple small things from the various articles I've read about Dbq vs central: Dbq did not out gain them 500+ to 250....the Dutch had 325yds on the ground alone. Also with 6+ mins left in the game, a td from Dbq would have hardly been the "game winning touchdown" especially considering how quickly the Dutch were responding to scores.

Thanks NKD, I was thinking that Bethel was the last game before Simpson, my bad.  Since the Dutch didn't play that day, I didn't pay as much attention to that week's results as I should have. Sounds like WB's offense is like Central's so far.  We are also mostly one demensional at this point in the year.  Hearing that there wasn't much running room for WB, is a threat for the Dutch this week.  The Dutch have a very good group for special teams, and that can help so much.

Anonymous donor for UD with 12 million huh? Hmm, Romney earns 13 mil and suddenly is speaking in Dbq?  Yeah, right.   :D :D :D :D

Tim Kremer is a great guy, his son went to Central for awhile.  I vote you let him spend the money.   ;)

How did you like Central inducting the UD wrestling coach into the Central hall of fame while all of you were there to cheer him on?  Wish he had wanted to come back to Pella, though I have a lot of respect for Central's current head coach.  Van Kley is a real class act.

I don't know that I would say that about the td.  UD's defense really stepped up to hold the Dutch from getting a first down and being able to run out the clock.  Granted, we were not playing the way we would have if we had needed to score, but even at that, it was a 14 point swing with us getting the points instead of UD.  Had UD scored, we would have had to get a TD, which adds a lot of pressure, and that would have only allowed us to tie the game, not win it and I don't know that we would have given up a Sheldon nearly sure point to tie for the much more challenging 2 pt conversion for the win.  I'm not saying we could not have won, but I wouldn't say it would hardly have been the game winning TD either.  I will give you that the Dutch O did a great job of responding to UD scores quickly.  Unfortunately, that put the Central D on the field much of the day.  For how long they were out there and 61 passes being thrown, that is exhausting.  I give the defense props for how well they played under the circumstances.

Didn't know Hanus had not been picked off until yesterday.  But as I've heard Coach Schipper say, when you pass there are only 3 things that can happen and two of them aren't good.  For 61 passes, it was beating the odds that onlly 4 were picked off.

Well that's not really true. A preseason all American can regularly throw that many balls without having a single pick....let alone 4 vs a team decimated by injuries.
And the Dbq stop on centrals last possession was obviously an outlier given the situation. Three runs up the middle when everyone knows what's comming. Central ran for 325 yds on 44 carries....odds say if they needed to move the ball and score in 6 mins they had a very good chance of doing so. And If the pick six had merely been knocked down that would've brought up a 3rd and 8 and they were 7/17 so odds are they would've kicked a fg and central would've taken over down 3 with 6 mins left, plenty of time to run down the field and tie or win.

Wow, thats a lot of shoulda-woulda.  My thought form a distance was a Spartan score would lead to some free football as they say.  Probably another 3 OT thriller!  With The Storm running a red hot passing attack I hope all the Dutch defenders get lots of rest and especially the DB's get healthy for next week.

I'll go first:
Against all odds a Simpson alum married a Central girl.  He took her on a grand honeymoon to the Ozarks and introduced her to bass fishin' and squirrel huntin'.  On the trip back home from the this grand honeymoon he couldn't believe his good fortune to have married such a wonderful girl.  Having very little  knowledge of modern equality between the genders, he told her his expectations of her:  to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal.

On first day at home he didn't see any of his desired changes.

The second day he didn't see anything either.

But by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the  dishwasher.

He still has some difficulty when he pees.

Ditto! Wore me out just reading it!! & I think if Central keeps outscoring the rest of their foes, they have a good chance of winning. ;D

A Simpson fan and DF1 met up in the parking lot where the tailgating was taking place.  The Simpson fan asked DF1 what she had in her box.  Why some Dutch letters of course, the best pastry made in town.  The Simpson fan said, "If I guess how many there are, can I have them?"  Knowing her tailgate was winding down and feeling sorry for the Simpson guy, she replied, "Sure, if you guess the right number I will give you both of them."

"Wow, great!" said the Simpson guy.  "Uh, five?"

Doolittle sorry I wasnt ther to meet you in person.  I had the pleasure of watching son's team go down to IW in OT.

Question for you.  My comment about UD's QB was did his receivers make him better or was he that good.  Not seeing the game only seeing stats is this a fair assessment or were the picks deflected or missed catches by the receivers or bad throws?  Just wondered your take on things as I know you are a pretty straight shooter and don't always see things through the blue glasses.
