I'd love to see  Linfield  to play Wartburg or Central!  or COE!

I know you don't know me on this board, but I got some "inside information" today on the Luther job.
The word was that the last guy could coach ok, but couldn't recruit well enough in getting kids to come there.  Lots of small college competition for the kids in the four states they usually recruit.

FYI - there are more than enough players here in Texas if you can get some kind of pipeline going.  Also many in California if you can get D3 on the radar.

And all this time I thought you lived in SoCal ;D

I think the trick to recruiting from those areas is to have someone on the ground there you know.  Someone that can give you an honest assessment if the kid has talent and if they think the kid has what it takes to be able to move a thousand miles from home and make it through 4 years of school.  Bringing in loads of kids, site unseen, that move on after 1 year...or 1 semester doesn't do you much good.  Dubuque from the 90's through the 1st part of this millenium can attest to that.

In basketball, Dubuque had an alum coaching in New Orleans that was able to start up a great pipeline of talent over the years during the Davison era.  For football I would love to find someone local we could trust so we could bring in about 5 per year from SoCal, 5 from Texas, 5 from Florida...along with 15 each from Iowa/Illinois/Wisconsin...another 5 could come from whereverville.  65 newcomers and hope you have 20-25 seniors 4 years later.  As I said though, nice to bring in kids because you know a coach, or an alum that knows the kid personally and gives you their recommendation the kid would be an asset for your school and team than to just bring in some kid you know nothing about other than they played high school football and they are willing to show up.

I'm willing to let any school finance my trips back home to SoCal to do some recruiting.  ;)

I used to live in SoCal until 1995.

After I made my post, I looked at the roster.  Luther has many players, but many of these guys are small.
It is really hard to win games and stay healthy that way.

I also agree that contacts and personal knowledge are important.  A coach with the right contacts in Iowa can find the right guys to win some games.  I also know the school wants to broaden their footprint of students.

I was talking about broadening the footprint and bringing in students from all over.  My point is, it would be nice to develop coaching or alum contacts in those areas that can identify the right kid to go to your school as opposed to just bringing in some kid from a thousand miles away that might not have any idea what living in Iowa is like and may or may not actually be a college level athlete.  It would be nice to find an area and specialize in bringing in kids from that area, like Central has recently cultivated Arizona.  Cultivate contacts in those areas just as you cultivate contacts close to home.

That is very interesting with UD coaching staff.  They must not have to worry about payroll at all.  That is a good place to be.  Congrats to UD

I am sure payroll doesn't play into it. We lost 1 coach to the Univ of Illinios (offensive line coach) so adding Coach Durnin isn't adding an additional coach to the payroll but replacing a full time assistant that got a new job.

I didn't know that.  I am betting that Durnin cost more as an assitant HC than an offensive line coach but maybe not.

This is a good strategy for recruiting all students.  If you can build up a peer group from a certain school or geographic area, they might not feel out of place.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Durnin roaming the sidelines of another IIAC school along with an old WIAC buddy.

2 weeks with no posts from Wartburg fans.  Turns out Newknightdad and footballdaddy have been recently reported in E Dubuque on some sort of 'fact finding mission' for their tailgate party bus.  Warthog and wartknight are still trying to make arrangements for the last weekend of the outfly.

Hopefully after they get back to their real jobs, we can have some more football to talk about  ;)

Y'know, this Luther-hiring-a-coach thing should be a lot more interesting, but the whole process has been pretty quiet.  I could post a few things, but everything that I hear comes second hand and is either rumor or opinion ... so I've decided to just keep my big trap shut and let the powers that be make the right decision.

My New Years resolution is BE POSITIVE!  So all I can say is things are going great, everything is terrific, nothing could be better and I'd be tempted to say that Wartburg is a good school, but I don't like to lie on Fridays.  Go Norse!

Sincerely yours,

Come on 5 Words or less it has been kind of boring around here.  Throw the rumors out here and if they are not good enough start a new one, chuck a couple of spears.  Remember the good old days in Jan. 2011 when Knightslayer 101 had the house rocking.

OK - Rumor #1.  The first  coach interviewed, Rick Ponx - DC from North Central, has been removed from the list of coaches on NC's football website.  Did he give notice to NC?  Was he promoted to a new position at the College?  Did all of the "Rick Ponx" searches from Luther fans overwhelm NC's server?  Irregardless, I'm not sure what Mr. Ponx's current level of interest is with Luther now that the HC job at his alma mater, Elmhurst, just became available.

Rumor #2 - Joe Beschorner - DC from Simpson was scheduled to be the second candidate interviewed at Luther.  The job was his to lose becuause one of the requirements for the position is having cute kids.  Unfortunately, Mr. Beschorner forgot his comb in Indianolla and couldn't make the interview.   ;)

That Beschorner guy needs to get a head coaching job, pronto.  That's a boat load of kids to have on an assistants pay scale.  Unless his wife has a cushy job, that is!  You're right though, good looking family.
