Wartburg has big questions on the offensive side of the ball.  I agree the score was not indicative of the game as Bethel was the much better team.  Wartburg's defense played well but the offense just kept putting them in bad situations.  No clear cut QB at this time and the o-line play is not up to Wartburg standards and has not been since 2011.  Could be a long year but I still expect them to be in the running.

Interesting fact from this weekend.

When St. Olaf lost to Luther 20-13 this weekend it was their first non-conference loss since 2003 when they lost to.......

.....wait for it......

Luther 23-10.

This fact has been brought to you by insomnia.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

If at first you don't succeed ...

  • redefine success
  • call for a 'do-over'
  • do it the way your coach told you.  If that doesn't work, make him the scapegoat
  • destroy all evidence
  • quit. No use being a damn fool over it
  • be prepared to receive a lot of free advice from those who haven't succeeded either
  • call it the beta years
  • delegate and make it someone else's problem

On the flip side, the problem with succeeding the first time is no one believes how hard it was. ;D

On the flip, flip side, If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is NOT your sport. :P

Busy weekend and needed to collect my thoughts before posting. And probably better I let others give their thoughts before mine anyway  ;)

I really believed the Spartans could win VS UW-Platteville. And REALLY, that thought was not through blue tinted glasses. But, I also felt we would need to play mistake free football and make more big plays then they did. It certainly didn't start the best with a fumble first play from scrimmage but the Spartan Defense came out and played great to get the ball back. I saw a lot of good things and a few not so good things. I think the difference with UWP is overall size and talent depth. I also think their QB is extremely talented and one of the best I have seen. I definitely think they will contend for the WIAC this year.

Good news about the loss is that if indeed UWP does win or finish in the top 2, then we played a majority of the FB game with one of the best teams in D3. I will be interested to see how the Spartans respond after a loss and face another UW school. One thing is for sure, if we come out of non-conf play healthy, then we should be prepared to take on IIAC foes.

Perhaps everyone is working 24-7 so the board has been really slow this week.  Always like to hear of folks promoting their team or commenting on others.  Makes my day!  :)

I'm looking forward to the UD vs UW-PLATTEVILLE game.  The UD  quarterback is the real MacCoy..........I think the best in the IIAC this year bar none.  He throws the softest ball w/ tight spiral 50 yards.
Comments.........

However, I picked Platteville to win as being overall superior to UD in spite of UD's big, fat O Line.  Comments.............

I hear the Norse are angry over their 13th loss. Don' want to be Cornell.  Maybe that will help.  Comments............

1. Long season ahead ... inconsistencies inevitable
2. Some fat + Lotsa muscle = Big
3. Luther's culture changed ... wins coming!

Wow!  I did not see this coming after losing to Presentation the week before!

Been quite some time since the Hawks and Norse both won on the same weekend in football. :-[

Lots of turnovers for both teams, but the Norse had not beaten the Oles since 2003 so it is good no matter how it happened. :)

I don't know who will be next, but here is hoping that bad streaks against Wartburg (2005?) and Central (2004?) come to an end.

Luther pounded the Dutch in 2009. Something like 24-6...?

Good point on the stats on Presentation, except I remember the games against Martin Luther and Waldorf in previous seasons.  The Norse would win by 40-50 points and then lose to St. Olaf.

The Norse have played above my expectations so far in 2013.  That is mostly a good thing!

A question for those of you who remember the IIAC in football in the 1980s.  How did the league do overall in non-conference games against the WIAC and MIAC?  It would seem as if Central must have done very well overall, but I am curious how it looked back in 1985.

In the 80's the WIAC was NAIA. The MIAC was a strange dual affiliation. SJU won the 1976  NCAA National Title and then played in the NAIA playoffs in 1982 (Lost to Northwestern (IA)). UST played in the 1981 NAIA playoffs (also losing to Northwestern).

SJU lost in 1985 NCAA playoffs to Occidental in Rd 1. Lost to Central in 87 in the Quarterfinals. Beat Simpson & Central in 89. Beat Coe & then UWL in 91. Beat Coe & UWL in 93. Beat La Verne and Wartburg in 94. Beat Simpson, lost to UWL in 96.

And UWLax won the 1985 NAIA National Title.

Also, the NWC schools were all NAIA until later in the 90's. Between them Linfield and PLU won something like 6 or 7 National Titles in the 80's and 90's.

Probably a lot more info than you were looking for...

Loras' Nate Carrier named athlete of the week.

From the article...

Loras College running back Nate Carrier was named the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's male athlete of the week.

Carrier, a sophomore from Shullsburg, Wis., had 38 carries for 263 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Duhawks to a 44-33 win at Rockford University.

Carrier's rushing total is the highest for an Iowa Conference back in a single game since Luther's Tyler Sherden ran for 297 yards and five scores in a 47-41, double-over time win over Simpson on Nov. 3, 2007.

Loras placekicker Louie Oswald also was recognized for his performance Saturday. Oswald, a senior who prepped at Dubuque Wahlert, connected on field goals of 21, 30 and 26 yards and made five extra points.
