Tough one to swallow. Congrats to the Knights. The Spartans can't get the Knight monkey off their back. Like D-Dog, I just became a HUGE central and Coe fan.

Great defensive battle. I would say the top 3 defenses in the league, UD, Wartburg, and Central.

To make matters worse, I go deer hunting after the game. Shoot a deer before dark, find my arrow and search for the deer for 2 hours and nothing. A day of disappointments.

But, I will live to hunt another day and the Spartans will pick themselves back up and fight on. Only thing they can do is control what they can and win the next 3 games. No easy but hopefully this game leaves a bad taste in their mouth.

Coe would like to throw the red challenge flag on that one and after a quick meeting, the refs concur. Current defensive rankings are: 1-Central 2-Coe 3-Warburg 4-DBQ

The Dubuque offense struggled against Central and Wartburg.  Central did a good job of slowing the UD passing game, but gave up some rushing yards to Dubuque.  Wartburg was able to stop the UD rushing game and was able to slow the passing game a bit with some blitz packages that seemed to confuse the Spartans.  The Coe defense couldn't stop the UD running OR passing attack.

Central Defense held Bradshaw to 22-46-174 yards 1TD  But Acker got 111 yards rushing
Wartburg Defense held Acker to 66 yards rushing  but Bradshaw went 27-43-266 yards 1TD
Coe Defense Bradshaw went 17-26-311 yards 5 TD's and Acker got 151 yards rushing.

I'm just looking at current scoring defense stats and current total defense stats. They will even out by the end of the year.

Yeah, I modified my post to include "conference only" stats as they show "like" opponants.  And stats never show the whole story as Wartburg has a strong defense and the Knights show up at 5th in scoring D and 7th in total D.  Not a fair representation of their true quality.

And my eyes have only seen Dubuque games.  From what my eyes saw, the Central and Wartburg defenses looked light years better than the Coe defense showed against Dubuque.  In the Wartburg game I thought the UD defense looked great.  Basically 3 and outs for Wartburg except for the 3 scoring drives.  That was a very weird game.

And we might be sleeping a bit on the BVU defense as there are no BVU fans on here and the Beavers poor overall record.  Simpson surprises me for all the supposed players they lost on the defensive side of the ball, those aren't bad stats from the Storm.

Week 7 comments....watched on Vidio

Simpson so exciting with overtimes.  Last gasp does it.  QB should be MVP !

Surprised that UD was so sluggish but give it great credit to Knights defense.....a bit of a surprise.

Central are winners no doubt.  Norse shot themselves in the foot, back and knees once again.  Can't win with mistakes like that.

BV still is a commer.  Will finish better.  A very good team!

Have to agree about Luther shooting themselves in the foot, back and knees.  After they played so well against WB, I expected the game to be closer, not that it wasn't closer than it maybe should have been given the kicking issues.  As a Dutch fan it was a real pleasure to see the Luther punting team come onto the field.   :) :)

I'm sure those issues will be addressed this week, but the Beavers can relate.  Right now the Dutch punt/kick defensive special team is just on a major roll.  Hope it sticks with us to finish out strong.

I watched the UD/Wartburg game late Saturday night and was surprised at how much the UD Radio team was critical of the officials...I thought it was one of the better officiated games I've watched in the league so far.  There were some controversial calls but all of them were judgement calls that could have gone either way.  I will admit that Wartburg could have been called for a few procedural things that went un-flagged (illegal motion).  But that I'm just curious if anyone other than the UD Radio team thought the officials were too active.

I was surprised as well, because of all the radio crews I have listened to over the years, the UD crew has seemed the most balanced and never seemed to be homers.  The UD announcers missed the late hit by Dubuque flag on the Wartburg sideline, that was the proper call by the officials.  I'm surprised the Dubuque announcers made some of those comments, but then again I heard the Coe announcers make those same comments the week before when I listened into the Coe broadcast.  I've listened to Loras, Simpson, and Luther and others make similar statements in their broadcast. EVERY school has announcers make those comments.  Interesting that Dubuque gets called out for this.

One thing I will note, is the Dubuque announcers mentioned every holding penalty call in the 2nd half came from a ref standing near the Wartburg sideline, almost immediately after they made that statement a Wartburg DB mugged a Dubuque WR on the Dubuque sideline and nothing was called.  Like has been said on here before, there is holding on every play by every team, a ref can't always throw the flag.  I think Coach Willis, with his years in the league, holds a certain cache with officials that other coaches don't have.  If old intimidating Willis yells that the other team is holding, a ref is more likely to agree and throw the flag than he might other wise.  Like I said, they were all probably legit holding calls, they just all came from the Wartburg side of the field.

I also question that Dubuque gets called out on it by a Wartburg poster.  Last year I got to watch Wartburg players getting in refs faces and yelling every time they had a penalty called against them and twice hearing them drop F-bombs at a ref, saw a Dubuque player get bear hugged by a Wartburg player on the sidelines so the Spartan player couldn't get back on the field right away and listened to the Wartburg sideline laughing and I didn't say anything on here only to have a Wartburg poster then come on and post how it was the talk of his church that the Dubuque coach was a poor sport.  Why is it Dubuque keeps getting called out when every week similar things happen all over the conference.  Wartburg, of all schools, shouldn't be casting the first stone on this.

DD - I wasn't trying to call anyone out, other than the few awkward comments about the officials, the rest of the game was well broadcast, I was just looking for comments on how the game was officiated.  That being said, I agree with you on the late hit, and I thought that the contact downfield in the passing game went a little too far.  And while I thought the interior play was fairly clean, I saw a few guys get high-lowed in the run game on both sides that didn't get called either.

Didn't mean to throw a stone, I'm sure we all see things through our respectively tinted glasses.  I guess that's what makes this board so fun to read.

doolittledog

Fair enough. It just seems like I hear these comments after Dubuque games. I thought over all the game was well played and well officiated.

Willie University

There was a blatant pass interference on UD's sideline that did not get called. You could see his hand pulling his jersey and the UD WR getting turned around by it. That is the only one I can speak of that was crystal clear from my vantage point but I do think it was certainly odd that most of the flags came from the ref with his ear closest to Willis.

Regardless, nothing anyone can do about it. Another tough battle to be fought this Saturday.

BTW, Coe had a weak non-conference schedule and I was talking about Defenses that I have seen in conference play.

I am not saying they are not a good defense but my personal opinion is that the top 3 defenses are UD, Wartburg, and Central. I have not seen BV, Simpson or Loras yet so we'll see.

We'll see if Coe can stop Wartburg. I certainly hope they shut them out! ;D

doolittledog

Sorry to bite your head off, mediaguy. I'm surrounded by Wartburg fans where I live and have been getting non stop texts about how warty once again dominated Dubuque. I should be too old to let it bother me,  but I guess not ;D

It was to me after seeing the Norse play both teams.  Wartburg got it done though.

Congrats to Simpson as the Storm win was probably the outcome that was the closest to shocking as I keep waiting for Coe to pick it up as the year goes on.

Central beating Luther is not a shocker!  It also was not shocking that Luther had more turnovers and was worse in special teams than the Dutch!  That has happened a lot in the last 40 years. :-[

Maybe the Norse can win in Pella in 2015!

I guess why I was not suprised is that since I have been following Wartburg which I admit has been about 10 years the rivalry game between Luther and Wartburg is always a battle and I don't ever remember it being a blow out.

Wartburg very seldom blows another team out in the IIAC and rarely gets blown out in the IIAC.

That is why I was not suprised.
