Walston Hoover...who recently reappeared on here...will be singing the National Anthem at the Central/Wartburg game this weekend.

My wife, who babysat 2 brothers on the Central squad, tried to lobby for the Doolittle family making the shorter trip from our house over to Waverly to see this.  I vetoed that request, as our kids say they haven't been to Dubuque enough this fall and I want to see my alma mater one more time this season.  But for others on here, the Wartburg parents put on a great tailgate across the street from the tennis courts, and you would get to see Walston Hoover and his "attempt" to grow a "playoff beard" as his Des Moines Dowling team at this time are still in the playoffs.

I have a sneaky feeling Simpson is going to represent the IIAC this year and win at least their 1st round game.
That leaves Simpson as champion all by themselves with Wartburg, Coe, and possibly UD tied for 2nd at 5-2 with Central finishing 3rd at 4-3. Followed by BV, Luther, Loras.

That's what I figure. Except for the first round game nonsense. The IIAC will draw the WIAC champ or Bethel.

I guess it's that time of year so here's how I see the West Region 1st Round matchups with a few assumptions.
1. Bethel wins out
2. UW-Platteville and UW-Oshkosh win this week
3. IIAC winner only has 1 conference loss

home teams listed first...
Linfield v Redlands...NCAA too cheap for long roadtrips

UW-Whitewater v UMAC Champ (Greenville/St. Scholastica play in week 11)...Short road trip, shorter playoff run for UMAC.

Bethel v MWC Champ (Illinois College or St. Norbert, both undefeated but not scheduled to play each other, not sure what the tie-breaker is)...could be interesting for a quarter or half but too much firepower and size for MWC to deal with.

UW-Platteville/UW-Oshkosh v IIAC Champ (by far the most contested auto bid remaining in the west)...interesting matchup between leagues who have increased Non-Conference game scheduling, likely the most competitive game in the first round.

Unfortunately for Concordia-Morehead someone has to be the team on the outside looking in and fair or not, they could be sitting at home with 1 loss and nothing to show for it.

Just my 2 cents worth but thought it would make for some good conversation.

From reading their board the past week or so I think the tie breaker is which team has had the lead for the most quarters.  Right now Illinois College has a significant lead at 7 quarters and with only 8 more to go it would appear they have it pretty well in hand.

That sounds about right.  Pretty good analysis.  Unless they move a team out of region.  In 2011 Dubuque was ranked 5th in the West but was given the 6th seed in the North and travelled to 5th or 6th ranked in the nation North Central.

hazzben

I'd be shocked if they kept Linfield, UWW & Bethel all in the same region.

Linfield is West 1 or 2 (leaning towards the latter after first Regional Ranking).

Bethel or UWW are going North. There is no one in the East strong enough to prevent an unbeaten Mount (assuming they beat JCU) from being moved over for the umpteenth year in a row. Given the first RR, lets assume UWW gets the one seed in the North.

Bethel & Linfield are 1/2 in some order out West. (Although Bethel could end with 4 W's against RRO and get the 1 in the north as well). In this scenario, Bethel gets UMAC, lets assume St. Scholastica wins this weekend. I think Linfield would get Redlands.

UWO/UWP is the 3 seed. I think IIAC or MWC champ goes here. The former is probably a better team, but the two losses hurt.

If Concordia wins out and beats UST, they are in a really strong position for a C. Keep in mind, they select the C's before they build the brackets. I'd put them as a 4/5 against whoever doesn't get the WIAC champ.

Then again, the committee could also ship in the CCIW champ or runner up and send IIAC or MWC north as well. We'll see.

Klompen

The idea that UWO might play the IIAC champ should give Central incentive heading into the final 2 games, if everyone else could just lose out it would really help!   :)  That is one of 3 games Central would like to replay.

Dubuque/Loras rivalry story in the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald

http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_85036b38-ba44-5c0b-9344-a4efb061aee8.html

From the article...

"Span the country and I don't know if there is another rivalry game like it with the schools being just six or seven blocks apart," Loras interim head coach Steve Helminiak said. "I think that's part of what makes it special. It brings a little different element to the whole thing. Whether you're undefeated going into this game or winless none of that should matter when you are playing your rival. If you can't get up for this one you can't get up for any game."

The winner of the Key City Clash will display the traveling trophy for the next year. One side of the key is painted blue and white to represent the University of Dubuque, while the other is painted in purple and gold for Loras College. A three-inch lead "D" or "L" is added to the chain of the six-foot wooden key stamped with the date of the game.

We have rivalries in our conference.  Are there other games with a trophy?

Walston Hoover

Wartburg and UIU used to have a Victory Bell trophy but I'm not sure UIU even knew it existed.

Hoping I don't lose my voice tonight! "Duetting" the Anthem tomorrow with another former Warty captain, Luke Kotz. Having a reunion for the '02, '03, and '04 IIAC title teams tomorrow so some of us old guys will probably be taking over the student section and getting after the damn dirty dutch.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Ok, one last shot at the warty fans:  ( or 3)

What do 2 quarters in the bottom of a toilet and a Wartburg cheerleader have in common?

Everybody sees them but no on picks them up!

A Knight fb player walks into the Dr's office and takes off his hat to revel a frog sitting on his head.  The doctor looks and says what can I do for you?  The frog responds "can you take this Wart off my butt!"

A Wartburg football player is riding horseback and falls from his horse.  He would have been trampled to death but a Walmart associate came to his rescue and unplugged the horse.

Dubuque/Loras preview from the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald

http://www.thonline.com/sports/local_sports/article_814ad5e3-b1d0-5644-a961-79b82e8dcc0b.html

From the article...

Loras (1-7, 0-5) at Dubuque (4-4, 3-2)

Kickoff: Noon at Chalmers Field

Radio: WDBQ-AM 1490; WRVE-FM 101.1

Last year: The Spartans blanked the Duhawks, 45-0, for their second straight win in the series.

Last week: The Spartans lost at Simpson, 50-46; Central topped Loras, 48-3.

Outlook: The Spartans need to erase the memory of losing a 46-35 lead with 8:49 to play last week and squandering a record-setting performance by quarterback Bryan Bradshaw, who set Iowa Conference single-game records for passing yards (500) and total yards (513) ... The two offenses are at opposite ends of the Iowa Confenrence spectrum. UD has scored 265 points; Loras 83. UD has gained 920 yards rushing; Loras 772. UD has passed for 2,446 yards; Loras 812. Total offense: UD 3,366; Loras 1,584. ... Spartans receivers Tyler Rutenbeck and Chris Bagly have scored 14 and 8 touchdowns, respectively. Loras has 4 touchdowns passing and 3 rushing. ... By the numbers, this one appears to be all UD. The only numbers that count, however, will be the score this afternoon.

Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier previews the Central/Wartburg and Luther/Coe games

http://wcfcourier.com/sports/football/small-college-football-capsules/article_ea88753b-ad0c-53d8-b302-c3453cceef77.html

From the article...

Central (5-3, 3-2) at
Wartburg (6-2, 4-1)

•When: Saturday, 1 p.m.
•Where: Walston-Hoover Stadium (Waverly)
•Last week: Central beat Loras, 48-3, while Wartburg lost to Coe, 24-10.
•Last year: Central won 31-28 in Pella.
•Game notes: Despite its loss to Coe last weekend at home, Wartburg controls its own destiny for the Iowa Conference's regular-season title and the automatic bid to the Division III playoffs. The Knights are tied with Simpson at 4-1 atop the IIAC standings, but own the tiebreaker with a head-to-head victory over the Storm. Wartburg finishes the season at 1-7 Loras. But before they can have a chance at winning a league title, the Knights have to get past a Dutch team that is starting to pick up steam. Central lost its first two IIAC games to Simpson and Dubuque, but have rattled off three straight wins. A question for Wartburg heading into the game is whether either of its top two quarterbacks will be healthy enough to play. Logan Schrader missed last week's game because of a hit he suffered against Dubuque, while Taylor Jacobsmeier did not play in the fourth quarter with an apparent arm/shoulder injury in the loss to Coe.
•Next up: At Loras, Nov. 16

Luther (2-6, 1-4) at
Coe (6-2, 3-2)

•When: Saturday, 1 p.m.
•Where: Cedar Rapids.
•Last week: Luther lost to Buena Vista, 37-14, while Coe topped Wartburg, 24-10.
•Last year: Coe won 35-7.
•Game notes: After opening IIAC play with a victory, the Norse have lost four straight conference games including last week's rout at the hands of Buena Vista where Luther lost six fumbles. Saturday's game is big for the Kohawks as they try to keep the momentum moving forward after their big win at Wartburg. Coe with a win over a Luther and a victory at Central next week could be in line for an at-large berth into the Division III playoffs. For the Norse, the game boils down to an offense that when it holds onto the ball gives its team a chance to win. Luther has lost 16 fumbles in seven IIAC games. The Norse defense has been solid all season and ranks first in the IIAC in total defense allowing less than 310 yards per game. Coe comes in averaging 407 ypg.
•Next up: Simpson, Nov. 16, 1 p.m.

Fixed it for you (dating myself here). Not sure how many of the 82-83 boys are going to be back. Talked to a few and other commitments may take it's toll on the #'s; some had already made the trek back @ HC. With or without their attendance, the Knights need to take care of business today!

A win is a win.  Knights knock off the Dutch 16-14.

Probably not the best game either team has ever played, but the outcome was in doubt until the final play.

The fans love it that way, but I'd guess it gives ulcers to both coaching staffs.

Didn't play well? That should be called the "which team wants it less" bowl. Both of those teams today get beat by DBQ, Simpson, Coe, Simpson, and probably BV. That was an ugly game by both, but in the end Central wanted it a little less than warty.

(And I can't speak for other fans, but I hate games with so many mistakes...I was expecting a lot more from both)
