Just popping back in after a way too long if an abscence. Very pleased with Wartburg's performance this year. Very puzzled with Central's. Any ideas why?

Any Wartburg old timers going to be around for the Wartburg/Dubuque game?  My sons football season will be over by then and my daughter is demanding I take her to another game in Waverly!

Of course the Warthog clan will be there.  Little Warthog is having his 10 year class reunion.  Hard to believe it has been eleven seasons since the 2003 Wartburg team was rolling through the IIAC.

There is a good chance we will be there but I must warn you.  The tailgate is much different from the recent past, when I went to a game last year there were a bunch of separate tailgates going on and not one big one like we used to organize.  It just didn't have the same feel to me but that may be because we are three years removed and don't know many of the parents.  It is yet to be determined if we will tailgate or go to Joe's for pregame.

We bought a tailgating grill last year and then haven't used it yet because my son is now in youth football and we have spent our Saturdays at his games.  Maybe we will break it out for the Wartburg game then.  Look us up and we'll have a beer for you guys.

A shot in the dark....

BV over Loras.  Loras is still coming, but Bobby Brown,s arm will win it.  Loras will throw a ton of passes.

WARTBURG over COE.........Knights keep rolling for now.  Will they ever slip?  Good team !!

Norse over Dutch.  Central has been the better team by far over the years.  But Norse have surprised them at Luther,s Homecoming game.

Simpson over Dubuque.  Spartans still reeling from last week.  Storm should win but game is in Dubuque making it close.

The weather should be beautiful on Saturday.  A perfecting passing day.  Loras over Buena Vista

Dutch losing to a bunch of Lutherans two weeks in a row?  Don't think so. Central over Luther

Dubuque wounded, mad, and playing at home.  Couch Z. will put together a plan. Dubuque over Simpson

Big noisy crowd on both sides of the field.  Always seems to be a barn burner. Picking with my heart. Wartburg over Coe

Thanks, Doolittle.  Stan gives a great interview.  I had thought he would have been good for Luther several years ago but they chose to go another route ....and it didn't,t work out.  Perhaps they are on track now.

If Luther and Loras can improve it will help the whole conference.  I think the IIAC has slipped some over the past 10 years or so.  Anybody.................?

I will be around for the big Homecoming game between the Knights/Spartans.  I had to leave shortly after the start of Bethel for my brother's wedding and watched some of the Stout game in between rain drops.  Pre-game events look unlikely as I am sure technical issues will need to be resolved for the live stream, but then I hope to watch most of the game from the endzone with AEN if he is around.  I am looking forward to the seeing the "new" UD football team as things have definitely changed since the early 2000's.  After the game, the plan is to enjoy an ice cold beverage or two and celebrate a Knight victory.

The last few posts give a mediocre view of the current DUTCH team.  This week they play Luther which folks have laughed at as a "throw-back" to a bygone era.  UD radio, I was told by an alum, kept putting down the Norse for the first half (score LC 21-UD 7).

Luther plays Central for their Homecoming.  DUTCH have had trouble at LC for the Homecoming game on occasion.

So.......Norse will win over Dutch on Saturday.....a grind it out game.

Other prophecies coming.......

Phred, here is the link to the UD radio.  http://portal.stretchinternet.com/dbq/portal.htm?eventId=159681&streamType=audio

I do think this is a case of a Luther alum trying to find something that just isn't there.  The only comment I found was after a Luther reception, the announcers said that Luther had only attempted 9 passes all season so that WR might be done for the day.  If you want to take that and run with it that the UD radio booth was talking down to Luther then fine.

I hate to be the grumpy old man here, but I listen to all the schools radio/TV crews.  I think UD is up with the best in the conference, and twice now (last year against Wartburg) they have been picked on for 1 comment that got made during a 3 hour broadcast.  Most crews do a great job, but also if you want to find something and run with it you could find something from every radio/TV crew to find fault with.  Some crews much more than others.  But strangely those schools announcers don't get called out on here.

I should note I only listened to the 1st half.  On my way to Dubuque now to hang out with friends and relive the "good ole days"  Hopefully get to see a football victory, but I know we will have a good time none the less.  Hopefully our kids behave themselves at their grandparents as well  ;)

I actually think it would be more rare to have a radio crew not be a Homer for the home team.  That is the beauty of it that they are there for UD not Luther.  I am not saying they were "disrespecting" Luther as I did not listen I just feel like it would not be unusual and if I were a UD supporter I would welcome it.  "PC" has gone to far!!  ;)

Just to weigh in on this UD announcer bruhaha.  I've known the UD play by play announcer since he was a toddler in diapers.  His mother taught both our boys.  His dad and I were both fans of the IIAC and Iowa State which led us to discuss both quite often.

I can assure you he doesn't have a malicious bone in his body. If anyone would be offended by any remark he makes on a broadcast it would be purely unintentional on his part.  He did have some wise crack when I phoned into the UD call in show and won a prize, but that was all in good fun.  I even got my prize delivered in the booth atop Walston-Hoover Stadium the following Saturday at the UD/Wartburg game.

First time commenter, long time reader.  My playing days were during D3football's launch and I have followed the IIAC since then.  In response to Phred's comment on the decline of the IIAC, I would wholeheartedly agree.  It seems that the rise of NAIA football here in the state (Wm Penn, Grandview) and the changing nature of kids (want the "signing days" and scholarships), and the fact that the Class 4A schools have facilities that are better than the IIAC in many cases, we aren't getting the same type of athletes/kids we once did.  I look at Central's talent as an example.  The O-line my senior year at Central in 2000 had 3 starters pushing 300 pounds and a couple of guys over 6'3" or 6'4", tight ends at 6'5, etc.  We had All-American tracksters in the offensive and defensive backfield.  Coe had 4 4 x400 All-Americans at receiver/dback as well as I recall. Having watched the last few years of IIAC games, it just seems like we're not anything like we used to be.  We would, as a conference, get 2 teams to the playoffs regularly and now our automatic bid has looked a bit suspect at times.  There are still some good teams in the league, but something has certainly changed.  After my playing days we would play as alumni in games against the players in the early 2000s and would have 10 or 11 defensive players who were All-Americans.  I don't know if we've had 5 All-Americans at Central in the past 10 years combined.  Maybe, I'm just getting old and looking back on things differently, but I don't see the quality as being quite the same.  In any event, Go Dutch and go IIAC!
