I had yet another scholarship conversation this weekend.  While at the UD/Simpson game a friend of mine said his son that is a junior in high school is only interested in D2 because he'll get a scholarship.  He seemed totally shocked that almost no one, especially incoming freshman receive a full ride at the D2 level.  I had to explain that in D2 it's 36 scholarships divided among 85 players.  An incoming freshman these days (from parents I've talked to) gets somewhere between $1k-$4k as a "football scholarship" and that D3 schools in IA/IL/MN/WI can often offer a better out-of-pocket option than D2.  Not to mention a closer option ::) ::) for someone like him living in the Madison, WI area.  We shall see what they do as they move through the recruiting process now that he is getting into his junior year.

As for the UD game this weekend.  I liked what I saw.  The offense seemed to finally figure things out and looked like the high powered offense I have become used to seeing.  The defense also seemed to have Simpson figured out. The defense and special teams gave up a few big plays, but over all looked good.  I'm hopeful for a good showing this weekend in Waverly.  My wife will be at a baby shower, so I will either have 1 or all 3 of mine with me...if good weather.  If the weather is poor I doubt I will talk my kids into travelling to Waverly.

Then you've got those NAIA scholarships to contend with  ::)

They would call that a D2 school  ;D

UD coaches show is up.  Stan is always a good interview.  Talks about the Simpson game and previews the Wartburg matchup this weekend.  The show starts about the 4:30 mark if I remember correctly.

A few  oobservations from Pella...

5.  The college continues to put on as poor of a game day experience as they possibly can.  No pre-game atmosphere promoted, no excitement in game (pep band plays "one-liners" exclusively now...they may as well not be there).  Very poor concessions.  I could go on.  The program deserves better.

I have only been to D3 games at Central, Loras, UWWhitewater, Augustana, Benedictine, U of Chicago.  UWW was a little better because they have a marching band and a couple thousand more people in general.  Otherwise, Central seemed to have at least as much ambience as the others.  Who does it better?

Saint Johns is pretty great, especially this time of year and in a game of competitive teams. Not unusual for a matchup with the Cobbers, Tommies or Bethel to top 10k in fans

1 - Could Central be waiting until they finally go through with those plans to move the home side to the other side of the field to promote the game day experience?

2 - What is the history of pregame atmosphere, in-game experience at Central?  About the same as it always has been?  Gone quiet as fan base has aged?

And how much of that does the college do and how much is just the fans making their own game day?

Don't get me wrong.  I am a huge Central fan and I would love to have fan noise be another thing that gives the Dutch a home field advantage in Schipper Stadium.  It is a little disheartening to have a big third down play coming up and the only people you can hear are the guys on the bench.  But I don't blame the college or the pep band or even the limited snack bar choices for the fact that the game day experience isn't all that I would like it to be.  I guess it is one of those chicken and egg things. I would say, that until more people come out to the games, it doesn't make much sense for the college to spend any more money on them. Others might say, until the college spends some more money on the venue, you can't expect any more people to turn out. I trust that the best minds in the athletic department are working on it.

The central game day thing is easy to figure out. They have rarely been a contender the past few years. I can recall the 2010 team (maybe 2011?) having fans all around, it was loud, people were up, and the "pep band" was drowned out. I think if you see the Dutch start a year 5-0 again, the atmosphere will return. Until, it will just be "another game" with less than stellar amenities.

Well, they don't have cheerleaders, which is always a major plus to the fan experience!!
