Just going off memory, I think he had won the starting job at East Carolina and then was benched and quit out of frustration.  I think he's been out of school for 2 years before coming back this year.  He is from Georgia, which is where Darren Myles was from.  Myles had been a Tennessee player that found his way to Dubuque.  He had good things to say about Dubuque and coaching contacts in the area are beginning to develop a bit of a pipeline to Dubuque.  I think there are 4-5 Georgia kids plus a couple from South Carolina on their current roster.
doolittle- Thanks, that makes sense. +K for your efforts. :D
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

SJU gained almost 100 more yds, was uber efficient in the redzone with 4 TD's and perfect on 4th down. And they didn't shoot themselves in the foot as badly through penalties. Plus, when they did get stopped, they flipped the field. And when you surrender nearly a first down per carry to the teams bell cow, you're in trouble.

Does UD do Coaches Corner?

They do.  Here is the link to their youtube channel.

Interesting day so far in the IIAC -

St. John's remains undefeated in the IIAC and Wartburg remains undefeated in the MIAC.
St. John's 56-7 over Buena Vista after beating U of Dubuque last week.
Wartburg 24-14 over Bethal after beating Augsburg last week.

Coe takes out a week's worth of frustration on Cornell 50-3.
We're reminded again why Cornell crawled back to the MWC.

Luther bounces back with a victory over St. Olaf after a close lost last week.
St. Olaf doesn't compare to UW LaCrosse, but a win is a win.

Central gets it turned around quickly with a win over a traditionally decent Monmouth squad.
Next week against Maranatha Baptist the Dutch should be able to name the score.

Loras puts up 42 on UW Stout, but gives up 52. in a loss
Don't expect the Blue Devils to score that much against Wartburg next week.

Now we'll see how the UD Spartans can do against UW Platteville later tonight.

Watched UD loss to platteville.  Video was like a family home cam but not of athletic quality.  Too much of field views and nothing showing line ups, formations, etc. ......I.e. Distance views.   I give the UD video presentation a D but the commentary was fine.

UD has a ways to go this year to be in the mix IMHO.

A question...since the Spartans have arguably the finest facilities in d3; a stable coaching staff and administration; a strong academic institution; a great Midwestern town; why can't the Spartans find the players to compete against the big boys.  No accusations...just askin'
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

Pat Coleman

Finest facilities is a stretch, but the indoor practice facility is something special, I definitely agree. However, that's been open about five minutes -- I don't think it's had a ton of impact in recruiting.

I can't speak to UD's academic reputation either -- I don't think it stacks up with the truly high-level academic institutions in IA and MN, though (Grinnell, Cornell, Carleton, Macalester). I doubt that's a differentiator.

So that leaves one thing UD doesn't have, and that's a winning tradition. They have one really good year, a couple decent years and a string of non-awful years, which for Dubuque is a good thing because they were awful a decade ago.

Give it some time and see what happens. Too early to say they can't find them.

I'd give Mr. Coleman some +k but I don't have 200 posts yet  ;)

I think in addition to that, some coaches are better recruiters than others.  Those 1st few years under Zweifel he was doing the bulk of the recruiting and he brought in some talented classes.  He then handed the reigns over to his assistants and while they have had some successes, they haven't brought in as deep of classes that Zweifel brought in.

I like that Dubuque has toughened up their scheduling, but maybe 2 ranked teams, plus a 3rd team that could challenge in the NWC this year might be asking a bit much.  I'm not saying I want a school like Maranatha Baptist or Finlandia on the schedule, but maybe something of a confidence booster might be in order for Dubuque in their non-con portion of the schedule soon.  I'd like to keep UW-Platteville on the schedule and then find a mid-level CCIW or MIAC opponent for their other game.  An Augustana or Gustavus type school.

I wasn't sure what the gap still was between Coe and Cornell.  Coe reminded me. :D

Congrats to Central!  Congrats to Wartburg for continuing to carry the banner for the IIAC!

Anyone that has seen B.V. play so far this season?  Where do they compare to last season?  I know the defense struggled last year and the offense did very well in league play, but the Beavers struggled against who they played in the non-conference last season as well.

St. Olaf isn't much better than the last two seasons, but I think they might be a little better than last season.  I also think Luther widened the gap even though they have now won the last three in the series.

UW-LaCrosse (opponent last week for the Norse) got pounded by St. Thomas though.  I know you can't compare scores, but my sense is that 5-5 or 6-4 might be the ceiling with this 2015 version of the Norse.  The defense is a little better but still needs work.  I am happy how they have been able to run the ball after replacing backfield talents at FB and QB.  Special teams keeps showing signs that they have more talent, but too many extra points have been missed and too many punt returns have just seen the ball bouncing for 20 yards inside the Norse 20.

To be positive though I have enjoyed watching the two Norse games as the games are fast and the Norse run the ball!

Good post!  Dubuque is almost playing the preseason schedule of a established program, but they aren't quite there yet.  Zweifel has done a good job though!

The image of Dubuque as a bottom feeder in athletics doesn't completely go away overnight, even though the basketball, wrestling, and football programs all appear more than healthy over the last several years.  The Spartans were always 2nd banana to Loras just within the City of Dubuque up until Stan took over.

Do most people think they have clearly leaped past Loras?  I guess I think they will and have clearly pulled even.

When I was playing in the IIAC the thoughts about academics at Dubuque were clearly better than Upper Iowa or Billy Penn, but I don't remember running into lots of people who were almost going to go there.  That was the mid-1990s though.

The facilities will be the gift that will keep on giving as the years go by.

My obvious bias tells me that Dubuque playing St. John's, UW Platteville and Pacific gives them a tough non-conference schedule.  Since you and the D3 staff know the "big picture", can you name any equally ambitious D3 non-conference schedules?

Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

A couple come to mind, but this is not an exhaustive list.

UW-Eau Claire: St. Thomas, Concordia-Moorhead, Wheaton
UW-La Crosse: St. Thomas, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Luther
North Central: UW-Platteville, Wesley, Trine
