Hey everyone, new to the board. As a former player, I've been a long time reader of D3 Sports and the board, but decided it was time to throw in my two cents.

It's been an interesting start to the fall, but what I want to get everybody's opinion on is the Wartburg defense. The Knight's offense has proven they can score points behind Schrader, Domeyer, and Anstoetter, but if a team locks the offense down or the offense has an off day, I think the Knights are a beatable team this year. Through the three games, they have put a full 60 minutes together. The defense does not look like that of a classic fast, physical Wartburg defense this year. The secondary has looked extremely spotty. They have played against a couple of very talented receivers, and while they do make some good plays, they also tend to give up big plays.

Through three games they have given up 27 points to a middle of the road Augsburg team, 14 points to a solid Bethel squad (which could have been more if not for some timely errors on Bethel's part), and 33 points to a low-mid WIAC team in UW-Stout. There's just something about watching this defense that makes me question if they have the horses to make another run in the playoffs this season.

Welcome to the board.

Wartburg is the only IIAC school to not use Stretch Internet.  And from what I can tell, the only one that doesn't archive their games so we can watch them at a later time.  I'd like to be able to take a look at the Wartburg games to see for myself.

So far, so good for the Knights.  They appear to be the class of the conference so far.  Like you say, a good offense can only get you so far if your defense is not strong.  Selfishly, I wouldn't mind if the UD Spartans were able to run up and down the field on their homecoming weekend against the Knights.  Somehow I figure old man Willis will have the Knights prepared each and every week.

Sounds like you're challenging them.

I found this interesting

Quote from: Loras College press releaseDUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Looking for their first win in 2015, the Loras Football team released their big guns on offense to the tune of 588 passing yards from senior Nik Schulte on their way to a 56-52 win over Augustana. Schulte finished with 47 completions and six touchdowns, breaking numerous school records in the process ...

The Duhawks have been hampered by the injury-bug so far in 2015, resulting in Nik Schulte being the third starting quarterback in as many weeks. The Anamosa, Iowa native made quite the impression in front of the Duhawk faithful on Saturday, making his case to be the starting quarterback the rest of the season.

I didn't know it is Wartburg's bye week too.  I was looking for an edge.  Shucks!

Well Central will have had 2 consecutive bye weeks for all intents and purposes, so there's your edge back.

certainly you jest.

Thanks for that.  I hadn't  scrolled past the upcoming events part of the page.  Though now that I'm looking, I see a soccer game, sunday worship, volleyball, chapel, convocation, and then it goes back to last spring.  No football that I can see.  Could it be a browser thing or am I just being blind again?

Interesting to hear your take on them...at their game vs. Bethel, I certainly had the feeling that last year's team would've drubbed this year's Bethel team.  Schrader still scares me every time he drops back...he's very accurate and mobile, but they didn't seem as dominating as last year's Wartburg squad.  Giving up 27 points to Augsburg isn't as bad of an indicator as you might guess.  They've got a good offense with a very dangerous QB, and a very good tall receiver.  Their demise in the MIAC has been their inability to stop other teams.

I was a bit surprised as well to see their closer than expected result vs. Stout.  I'll be swapping back and forth between the UST - SJU and the Wartburg - Central game this weekend for sure.

Seems to me that both Loras and Luther will be spoilers this year.  Last year both were predicted to be at the bottom of the final standings but both seem to have found a game....one in air and one on ground essentially.  The trick will be if they can sustain a season with only half an offense.

Loras will have the greatest difficulty, I think, as it seems to have little defense so far.  Luther,s defense has done well enough even against La Crosse.

Coe, UD, Simpson, BV could all find challenges from these two.  Wartburg however will walk away with the championship AND.........will challenge for the D3 title.  Getting by Whitewater is the trick.   In my very humble opinion.

Just trying to "stir the pot" a bit.

This 27 could easily be the lowest point total scored by the Auggies this year. It would have been higher if we hang on to the ball on the AUG 20 late in the game. Going back to the last game of the year in '14 vs Bethel, AUG has scored 62, 27(Wartburg), 54, 54.

Not at all. No disrespect to the competition, however, when most of your starters only play 1 quarter, it's essentially a bye.
