Trivia Question I though of while watching tonight's UWW-Morningside game: When is the last time Whitewater lost to an Iowa-based school? I'm sure it's been a long time, but I'm not sure exactly how long.

Simpson in 1997
Then Central beat UW LaCrosse in 99.  Some cheeseheads say the game shouldn't have counted because it happened on deer season opening day.  I drove up to a Packers game that day and made sure I had my emergency flashers on the whole way to make it harder for the drunks to mistake my Mercury for a big buck.

Here's an interesting BV factoid ... http://t.co/gpamEMD1oh

We had friends over that have a family member on the BVU team so I was following on twitter.  Close game with BVU making a goal line stand to win 14-10.  I later looked at their stretch internet archive and it cut out at the end of the 3rd quarter so didn't get to see the exciting ending.

This week's match-ups are interesting

Coe @ Loras ... Which hawk will fly offensively?
Buena Vista @ Simpson ... Conference litmus test for both
Luther @ Dubuque ... Spartans hope for revenge
Central @ Wartburg ... Perennial title contenders square off

I will actually have to put quite a bit of thought into this weeks picks.  These results might go a long way towards showing us how the rest of the season will play out.

I agree......this is a BIG week for everyone.  I was very surprised at the close score between BV and Waldorf.  Either Waldorf has improved greatly or the Beavers are on for a dismal season if that score means anything.

Any BV fans on the board who can enlighten us?

Coe @ Loras: Coe over Loras in this one. Loras has improved offensively, but has not shown the ability to play much defense this season. Coe may be a bit down this season, but will handle the Loras offense by keeping their offense on the field and controlling the clock.

Buena Vista @ Simpson: Tough pick here. I haven't seen many stats from either team, and the scores I have seen have been ugly. Simpson gets the nod as they have the home field advantage.

Luther @ Dubuque: I am going to take Luther on this one. I think UD will be frustrated by the Luther Triple O, and Luther will run the ball, run the clock, and win the game.

Now, for my favorite pick of the week: Central at Wartburg, Wartburg Homecoming.
Year in and year out, this is always a great game between two excellent schools, and two great coaches. Central always has a great plan in place for Wartburg. If this game follows the trend of many past games, it will be VERY close. I think Central makes a few plays - attacking the secondary with a few post routes, and runs their misdirection toss on the goal line to perfection for a score perhaps. Also, look for Central to attack the flats near the goal line with some play action - they will look to run the FB or TE quickly into the flats, making the WB linebackers work hard to gain the leverage to cover them.

As for Wartburg - They will continue to mix it up offensively. They will be balanced behind Domeyer and Schrader, with Schrader looking to get the ball out to Anstoetter. Domeyer and Anstoetter will have both need to have big games for the Wartburg offense to put points up.

With the Knights having the past week off, they should be rested, and come out with a good game plan offensively and defensively. Walston-Hoover will be jam packed and the Knights will have plenty of energy for homecoming. I think the Knights win, 35-31. Not without a battle, however, I think the Knights are going to need to make a few critical plays on defense, possibly special teams, down the stretch to seal the win. This should be a close, physical match up and should be exciting.

Humility is a virtue I admire, and I hope Central does well this Saturday but, for all of this analysis, the thing that scares me is that the Warts, as the team ranked sixth best in the whole counry, are 3-0, and have out scored their opponents, which are 7-5 by 100-74.  Central is 2-1 against teams that are 3-7.

Hey WB_Knights13, there is an IIAC pick-em page.  Go over there and put your picks in.  You're a couple weeks behind, but you could see how you stack up as the season rolls on.

My thinking for this week is...

BVU @ Simpson - Two teams struggling on offense.  Simpson @ home gets my pick

Central @ Wartburg - Central with a loss and an OT win not as impressive as Wartburg and their 3-0 record

Coe @ Loras - Coe got beat up week 1, then pounded Cornell, played tough @ Stevens Point, Loras improving, but not enough yet to beat Coe

Luther @ Dubuque - Luther held their own @ Lacrosse, beat the Oles, beat up Grinnell.  UD couldn't find their offense against the Johnnies and Platteville...seemed to find their O against Pacific.  I give UD the nod because they are playing at home and have had 2 weeks to prepare for the Norse option attack.
Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

From the UD Coaches Show...

Dubuque loved how they were treated by Pacific and are looking to sign a 4 year contract with them.  Unclear to me if that meant 4 more years, or 2 more years added to the 2 we have already played with them.  Coach Z likes to be able to tell the kids they could have a plane ride every 2 years.

Looking towards this weekends game against Luther.  Have to play disciplined defense, stop the QB, stop their tough son-of-a-gun fullback.  You can't practice the speed at which Luther will hit you with their offense.  Look to force turn overs on Luther.  Against a normal offense you get 13 possessions per game, against an option attack you get 8.5 so you need to make every possession count when playing against Luther.

Coach Z still thinks Wartburg is the team to beat in the conference

Coach Z says one of the great things about college football is the different styles you see played.  If you want to see physical football come out to Dubuque this weekend to see Luther @ UD.
Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

It seems every wb/central game comes down to one score late in the 4th, except for the 09 and 14 games...so you're probably right, this one will be close too. I just don't see how. The only thing going for Central is the starters have had 2 consecutive weeks off.
