I wonder when was the last time, during conference play, that Central/Coe/Wartburg all lost on the same weekend???

Perhaps the Spartans ambitious non-conference schedule is paying off.

5WOL went to bed early, so I've slipped behind the keyboard to give a shout out to the Buena Vista football team.  Swami accurately foresaw upsets to Coe, Central and Warburg.  The fourth "upset" came in a different way.

The fourth conference game brought Buena Vista to Carlson Stadium for homecoming and Luther held on for their first OT win since 2007 (first OT game since 2008).  While the Norse fans may have felt fortunate with avoid being "upset" at homecoming, I'm sure the Beavers walked away being "upset" at the referees. To explain, the Beavers defferred the OT coin-toss and chose to defend.  Luther scored on their second play and their defense forced BV into a 4th and long for what would be the final play of the game.  Everyone in the stadium knew they were going to throw to last week's D3football.com's WR of the week, Jalen Henningsen.  Sure enough, a perfect pass a, terrific catch and a TERRIBLE spot by the referee from my vantage point 200 yards away.  That said, the ref was 5 yards away, in perfect position and must have seen Henningsen step on the out of bounds line short of the first down marker.

Rather than, whine, complain or have a hissy fit, the BV coaches and team lined up to shake hands.  Coach Anderson is a class person and instills that same character into his players.  Thanks playing a hard fought game and exemplifying good sportsmanship throughout.

Sincerely yours,

Now, I realize Wartburg's wins recently haven't been super impressive, with their best win being over Bethel...but for UW-Oshkosh to pull an upset and be ranked ahead of Wartburg still with 1 loss? That's ridiculous.

Although Wartburg's wins have seemingly been less than impressive this season, they have won, and they haven't lost a regular season game dating back to November 2, 2013. This is where the regular season D3 rankings really fall short and mean anything. There aren't a lot of voters, and there is plenty of bias. #8 is good, but to have two 1 loss teams ranked in front of that? Complete joke.

And yes, I realize that Oshkosh's loss was to Robert Morris. However, two of their wins are over Finlandia (1-5) and North Park University (1-4).

Wartburg should be happy they're in the top 15. They are riding the coat tails of last seasons ranking. Can you honestly say they've looked like a top 10 team at any point this year? No you can't. If they don't figure it out soon, we'll have a repeat of the IIAC playoff rep from a few seasons back.

I was trying to make this case but got smacked down for it on this board.

Wow, I try to enjoy a little off and in-season me time and look what happens!  We have swamis calling the outcomes!  I plan to check the water in Dubuque to see what they are pumping into those football players.  LOL  Gotta get some of that in Pella!

Here I thought after last week's big win over Luther that maybe Central was back to normal, the rest of the season would surely be a win-out situation.  Well, the thinking has changed drastically.  Okay I still think Central should be able to win out, I have rose colored glasses after all.  BUT  I am a realist as well and UD put a licking and spit shine on WB yesterday.  Congratulations to both Loras and UD on putting a glow over the Mississippi yesterday.  The only thing that made me feel better about Central losing was hearing that WB got creamed.  I'm sure the WB fans felt the same about the Loras/Central outcome.  Loras was ready to play and played with confidence on offense.  Neither defense could stop the other team most of the time.  Central was not prepared by the coaches defensively.  It looked like we were in prevent defense, playing off the receivers so as not to give up the big play.  So we let them make us look like 8th graders as they short passed us downfield most of the day.  No offense, but I would rather get more INT's and stop the team, giving up a rare big play than let the other team rewrite the record book against us.

But kudos to Loras, UD, Simpson and Luther for getting the big wins for the underdogs.    Guess I need to stick around and prevent swami curses.

Very rough outing for Wartburg. I was unable to see any of the game, but then again I think I'm glad I missed it. Haven't checked the stats, but then again I don't think there is a need to. I think all of the mistakes previously brought up (short-yardage situations, goal line offense, big plays being let up defense) finally added up for the Knights. I hope this is a wake up call for the entire program and the guys are able to refocus and win out. Don't remember the last time a Wartburg team has been beaten by 32 points. Congrats to UD, they clearly had an excellent game plan put together and went out and executed in front of their big homecoming crowd.

The central game had little to nothing to do with coaching. They will be great on run D and torched by any competent QB with adequate receivers. Just the nature if this lineup.
