Swami say "upsets foreseen tomorrow"

Congrats on seeing the wacky weekend coming!  I went to the Iowa-Northwestern game in Evanston and did not check IIAC scores until after the Michigan-Michigan State broadcast ended. :o  Let's just say we were talking lots of football on the way back to the great state of Iowa!

Congrats as well to Loras, Simpson, Luther, and especially Dubuque!

Wow, I try to enjoy a little off and in-season me time and look what happens!  We have swamis calling the outcomes!  I plan to check the water in Dubuque to see what they are pumping into those football players.  LOL  Gotta get some of that in Pella!

Here I thought after last week's big win over Luther that maybe Central was back to normal, the rest of the season would surely be a win-out situation.  Well, the thinking has changed drastically.  Okay I still think Central should be able to win out, I have rose colored glasses after all.  BUT  I am a realist as well and UD put a licking and spit shine on WB yesterday.  Congratulations to both Loras and UD on putting a glow over the Mississippi yesterday.  The only thing that made me feel better about Central losing was hearing that WB got creamed.  I'm sure the WB fans felt the same about the Loras/Central outcome.  Loras was ready to play and played with confidence on offense.  Neither defense could stop the other team most of the time.  Central was not prepared by the coaches defensively.  It looked like we were in prevent defense, playing off the receivers so as not to give up the big play.  So we let them make us look like 8th graders as they short passed us downfield most of the day.  No offense, but I would rather get more INT's and stop the team, giving up a rare big play than let the other team rewrite the record book against us.

But kudos to Loras, UD, Simpson and Luther for getting the big wins for the underdogs.    Guess I need to stick around and prevent swami curses.

The central game had little to nothing to do with coaching. They will be great on run D and torched by any competent QB with adequate receivers. Just the nature if this lineup.

I have seen perhaps 6 quarters of Dutch Football this season, but I also thought Loras would give them many more problems than Luther just from the way they are built this year.  I did think they would beat Loras in a higher scoring game though.

The Luther loss to Dubuque had me less pessimistic than the loss to Central and the win over B.V. (although I did not see any of the B.V. game).  The Norse Defense is starting to put up the bad numbers much like they did in many of the IIAC games in 2014.  Can they win 5 games again this year?

Luther plays  Wartburg, Coe, Loras and Simpson to end the season.  With a mediocre pass defense the Norse have a difficult time coming from behind in scoring as a run orientated offense.  Each of these teams thrive on passing which is Luther,s Achilles,s heal.
Currently at 3-3 they could lose all 4 and be 3-7.  Wartburg will be "out for bear", Coe has been Luther,s nemesis over the years, Loras can run by the cornerbacks and the Storm ?
Looks like Norse will slip to 4-6.

I wonder when was the last time, during conference play, that Central/Coe/Wartburg all lost on the same weekend???

I can only (easily) get data back from 2001 on the Iowa Conference website.  Coe joined the IIAC in 1997, so that leaves a 4 year gap.

Since 2001 -

Central, Wartburg and Coe had never lost IIAC games on the same weekend until Saturday.

Take Coe out of the equation - and this was only the 3rd time that both Central and Wartburg had each lost on the same IIAC Saturday (once in 2008 and once in 2011)

Those "stats" wouldn't change much if I took the time to fill the 4 year gap.  Central went unbeaten in 1998 and 2000, and in 1999, their lone league loss was to Wartburg.  1997 is in question.  Central lost one league game, to Simpson, on October 18th.  So if Wartburg (and Coe) lost that weekend, it could add to the list.

Thank you, I was too lazy to look it up!

Hey Voice, now with Central and Simpson both broadcasting on sister stations...any chance we could see an Anchorman style fight between the Central and Simpson announcers  ;D

Dubuque Coaches Show was tonight.

http://portal.stretchinternet.com/dbq/portal.htm?eventId=235551&streamType=video

Recaps the UD/Wartburg game and previews UD/BVU.

One nugget from the show was Coach Z mentioned with Nebraska Wesleyan being added to the conference next year schedules will flip, and Wartburg will play at Dubuque again next season.  I don't know if that means the entire schedule will be that way or just 1 game or what exactly that means.  I'm sure someone out there could get their hands on a 2016 conference schedule.

And if my memory is correct, Coe joined the conference in 1997, but their 1st football season was 1998.

And if my memory is correct, Coe joined the conference in 1997, but their 1st football season was 1998.

Good memory - Central didn't play either Coe or Cornell in 1997, and then had a full 10 game IIAC slate starting in 1998.

So, yes, officially, this past Saturday was the first time in IIAC history that Central, Wartburg and Coe all lost on the same day.  By my count - 156 weeks of IIAC play.

My interest is narrower.  I wondered how many times Central has given up 50 points or more.  Scanning the scores in the media guide, since 1892, it looks like Central has had the half century rung up on them 6 times.  That wouldn't be bad except that two of them have been in the last 5 years.  But I am an optimist and the Dutch team is young so I see a bright future.

Hey DDog...Loras had a marching band for their half time show also. I didn't hear where they were from. I'm guessing high school.  They were pretty good.  It still seems to me that there are many good high school bands in Iowa and IIAC schools are wasting a resource if many of those musicians end up on their campuses.

My guess is these schools figure these band kids will go to their school regardless if there is a band or not.  A few years ago Dubuque had a strong pep band, I would guess around 40 members or so.  Their leader was only a part time employee of UD and when they didn't offer him a full time position he left.  The band held on for maybe another year but then faded away.

Dubuque Telegraph-Herald previews the Simpson @ Loras and Dubuque @ BVU games.

http://www.thonline.com/sports/other_sports/article_51a780eb-c811-56e5-a82f-c4cbdfda20ff.html

From the article...

Outlook: Loras quarterback Nolan Baumhover makes his third start having thrown 14 touchdowns passes in the past two games and 20 for the season. The Duhawks not only lead the Iowa Conference in total offense at 589 yards per game and scoring offense at 40.8 points per game, they also lead the NCAA III in passing offense. ... On the flip side, Simpson ranks last in the IIAC in pass defense allowing 249.2 yards per game. ... As unstoppable on offense as Loras has been, its defense has been porous allowing 42.3 points per game and 505 yards per game. ... The storm are led by running back Jordan Breem at 114.2 yards rushing per game, and he has six touchdowns. ... Both teams are one game behind UD in the Iowa Conference standings. A win by the Duhawks keeps them in striking distance with the Key City Clash looming next Saturday.

and...

Outlook: The Spartans have won four straight games and sit alone in first place in the Iowa Conference standings. ... While UD ranks fourth in the league in total defense, throw out non-conference play and the Spartans are No. 1 in scoring defense, No. 1 in total defense and No. 1 in passing defense in Iowa Conference play. ... Trevor Stauner has spearheaded the defense with a team high 10.5 tackles per game. Dylan Hastings isn't far behind at 9.5 tackles per game. ... Against Wartburg, Malachi Ward recorded three sacks and recovered a fumble for a touchdown. ... Freshman running back Maurece Herrion is coming off an Iowa Conference Athlete of the Week performance. He gained 140 yards and scored four TDs against the Knights. ... As good as UD's defense has been in league play, the Beavers rank last in scoring offense at 20.3 points per game and sixth in total offense gaining 375 yards per game. ... The Spartans have an opportunity to remain unbeaten and atop the league standings with Loras coming to Chalmers Field next Saturday for a potential first-place showdown.

Got an invite to head to Norse country in style (via RV) & convinced the boss our fall projects & hectic work schedules could take a backseat for the day. I am pretty lucky my wife is a big football fan; pro & college :). Plus There is always Sun as the Bears are off this week!

I am sure this wasn't a fun week in practice in the Wav town. Hopefully the intensity translates to the field. Looks like the wind may be a factor which will effect the Knights more than the bad guys! Warts need to finish these final games strong & hope for a little luck.
