Ouch.  51-7?

Dubuque loyalists can be proud of their team, but the rest of us have to wince.  The IIAC will never get more than one team in the playoffs with this kind of result.  I hoped that after Wartburg's record in the playoffs a year ago we were headed for better success from the Iowa Conference team.  I really thought the team that slugged Wartburg would be competitive with St. John's the second time around.  Now I think that performance against Wartburg was 50% fluke.

Also, can't believe all the playoff outcomes were so predicable.  Gotta be an "upset" once in a while or we should just buy four trophies and hand one to the four # 1 seeds -- they're going to win anyway.  Ho, hum.

I expected a 2 or 3 TD win by St. John's in Round 1, but where the heck were the UD fans showing support for their team?  Judging by what I saw on the video feed, the visiting team was not very well represented.  Cold weather or not, that is one thing I can proudly say about Wartburg - the fan base travels well, often times having as many fans as the home team.  Good luck to St. John's in the next round.

Cold weather might not have been the issue as much as snowy weather. It wasn't snowing in that part of Minnesota but I suspect a fair amount of snow was on the roads in Iowa and southern MN, judging from what I saw elsewhere.

Dubuque fans filled the visiting stands at North Central 5 years ago. Dubuque fans bring as many traveling fans to conference games as any other school. As surprising as this may sound to Wartburg fans, they don't bring more fans to UD games than any other conference schools fan base. If the visiting side looked sparce yesterday at St Johns it had a lot to do with the 10+ inches of snow we got Friday. For me, my family was watching my daughter dance in a ballet. That was more important for us, though I did keep up on here until the curtain was about to be raised.

This talk brings me back to when Wartburg would announce 7000-9000 attendance for homecoming games. Then in 2008 on the final week of the season, with Wartburg needing a win for the conference title we counted 174 fans on the home side, and 20 on the visiting side. Only for Wartburg to claim 3,000 attendance in the box score. After a week of conversation on here about how absurd that was they changed the announced attendance to 1,200. If only 200 fans showed up for a Wartburg HOME game with a conference title on the line, you'll excuse me if I don't buy your super fan mythology.

There, there, Lil'Dog.  No need to fret.  I was simply making an observation about what I saw at last Saturday's game...not one 7 years ago.  Good grief, those 2008 numbers must have really troubled you. Here's wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!

3000 listed as the attendance.

Good lord, there wasn't 300 in that place.  I understand padding attendance, but it should at least be partly grounded in reality.

The Knights might have a "season ticket" package where all of the students and faculty are automatically counted as part of the gate. ;)

Maybe that Wartburg math is coming back to hurt whoever "estimates" the crowd. :)  Sounds like they need to go back and learn about how to round numbers.

On a more serious note, it is all right to admit that there are games in which people did not show up.  It happens to lots of teams.

Making the numbers up and then taking pride in having good attendance numbers over the years seems a little hollow, no matter how many other schools may do it.  I am not saying that they have been doing this over the years, but to hear something like this can taint things.  Hopefully this does get cleaned up.

Just thought I'd spend 20 minutes reading old posts. :)

Well you did a bit more than that.  You observed Dubuque didn't have many fans in the visiting section and then went on to toot the Wartburg horn about how well they travel.  I'm just pointing out they don't travel to Dubuque in any greater numbers than any other IIAC school.  And I have seen Knights fans don't always show up to their own stadium with a conference title on the line  ;)

Just putting it out there this myth of hordes of Wartburg fans roaming the plains of the Midwest in support of their team isn't all that they make it out to be...they are pretty much Joe Average compared to every other school in their conference.

With all that said, I wish you and all the others on here a Happy Thanksgiving.  Especially all those I have been able to meet in person over the years.  We have shared beers, and food, and lots of great stories.  One of the things I love about the D3 experience.

Not sure if I would say there is a new sheriff in town just yet, and in regards to attendance numbers, not sure how they come up with them but I disagree with any poster who says Wartburg didn't travel well. Many times had more than most of the home teams that we played. My son graduated last year, and every game we went to in the IIAC we had more fans. Now I will say that the Tommies and Johnny's travel extremely well.

I've attended all 45 games that Wartburg played in the last 4 years and our numbers have consistently been strong. Great family support for the players.  We've seen other schools do the same, and it certainly makes for a great atmosphere.  :)

We rested with the best overall season winning percentage among IIAC teams.  ;)
