What are D3's new NLI rules?

Nice topic to 5WOL!  I'm surprised so few have picked up on such a hot mid-winter topic, so I'll take a swing.  Last year, the NCAA Division III rules committee adopted several rule changes affecting recruiting by member institutions, including:

  • Division III coaches will be permitted to have off-campus contact with high school Juniors starting January 1, 2016.  Previously, the off-campus visit period began in July after completion of the Junior year.
  • NCAA Division III membership voted to approve the use of a "non-binding standardized celebratory form" which can be signed by a prospect after the prospect has been accepted to a Division III institution.
  • NCAA Division I or II commits will continue to sign a standardized National Letter of Intent provided by the NCAA at the athlete's signing ceremony during prescribed dates set by the NCAA for any given sport.
  • There is no standard "signing date or signing period" for the use of the NCAA Division III form, unlike the National Letter of Intent signings.

I wonder if we'll see any NCAA III signings in the IIAC this year?
What does the board think of the extending off-campus recruiting visits to Juniors?

Sincerely yours,

I wonder if off-campus recruiting of juniors would be a waste of time.  When I talk to kids and parents it was usually they got involved with the D3 schools once they figured out D1 and D2 schools weren't going to sign them.  And that was typically early fall of their senior years.

Though, if a coach is visiting a school, or at a recruits house and there is a junior in that same school/town that they have been made aware of, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to start that relationship early.

The 4 kids from our local school that were freshman at Wartburg last fall all had a signing day where the local paper took their pictures signing a "Letter of intent" it was in the paper and on the schools facebook page and twitter account.  Though not shown on any Wartburg social media site...just from the high school side of things.  It will be interesting to see if IIAC schools start to play up recruits signing "letters of intent" on their social media sites.

Good for them, D3 kids put as much time and effort into their athletic career as D1 and D2 kids, I see no reason to exclude them and not let them have their moment.

One of the things I like about DIII is that, the student athletes get treated like all of the other students.  I think it is cool that local papers report on where their kids go to college and their successes in the classroom and at sports, but I don't think we need anything extra for DIII athletes' letters of intent.

I'm ok with 18, 24, 25, 27, 28

The rest of those on the list, Wisconsin needs to step back and take a deep breath...relax.  Let fans and players have some fun and show some actual emotion out there.  That's half of the fun of going to these games.

The head of the WIAA has sent an email apologizing for the first email to each member school.  The initial email came from the Director of Communications, Dave Clark.  The WIAA has had a sportsmanship policy in place for eternity.  The schools just overlook some of it.

None of this was of any interest to anyone until a high school athlete tweeted "Eat ****" WIAA and the WIAA came across it and forwarded it to the principal of the athlete's high school.  The WIAA made no suggestions as to any sort of consequence to the athlete but the school freaked out and suspended her 5 games.  Then it hit the media and is what it is now.  Which at this point is old news to most of us here.

It was clearly an overreach by the WIAA who probably had the best intentions.  But the whole thing comes off heavy handed on several fronts.
