Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

OK - Here's what I found on the NCAA Division III Legislative Services Database:
https://web1.ncaa.org/LSDBi/exec/bylawSearch?division=3&articleRadio=0&bylaw=13&bylaw2=&adopted=0&contain1=1&searchWords1=&in1=1&advanced=N&fromMscs=N&bylawSearchSubmit=Go+Search&queryCount=false

13.02.11
Electronic Transmissions.

  • Any electronically transmitted correspondence (e.g., electronic mail, Instant Messenger, private communication through social networking site, text messages or facsimiles) may be sent to a prospective student-athlete (or his or her parents or legal guardians) provided the communication is private between only the sender and recipient (e.g., no use of public chat rooms, message boards, public communication through a social networking site). An enrolled student-athlete may send private electronic correspondence (e.g., electronic mail, Instant Messenger, private communication through social networking site, text messages or facsimiles) to a prospective student-athlete for recruitment purposes.

and

13.02.11.3
Exception -- Public Release of General Athletics Information Sent Through Electronic Transmission.

  • Electronically transmitted correspondence in forms other than electronic mail, text messages and facsimiles may be sent to a prospective student-athlete by an institution's athletics department, or a campus department acting on behalf of athletics, provided the following criteria are satisfied:  (Adopted: 7/21/09 effective 8/1/08, Revised: 1/14/12)

    • (a) Any member of the general public may become a member of the group to which the electronic transmission is sent;

    • (b) A prospective student-athlete who chooses to receive electronic transmissions through the electronic service must retain the ability to decline receipt of the communications at any time or may unsubscribe from the electronic service at any time; and

    • (c) The content of any electronic transmission that is sent to a public group that may include prospective student-athletes must be the same for all members of the group (e.g., news alerts, admissions and alumni information, scores) and of a general nature.

I am not out to roast Loras over their football twitter posts, since they aren't the only ones in the IIAC posting comments on Twitter to announce recruiting successes.  Rather, I'm more interested in what governs these kind of announcements since they are new to me (and frankly seem somewhat silly).  Also, I'm sure that AD's and the conference commissioner are more aware of the rules than I, so that if an infraction were being made, it would surely be identified and corrected.

That said, I wonder how the NCAA interprets a "group."  The rules seem to suggest a broad definition for a group, such as ALL alumni or EVERYONE matriculating though admissions.  Does a football team qualify as a group? Well I suppose it might since a team of 100 men could constitute a quarter of the male student body at a small college.  Even so, I wonder what the music department or English department thinks of this skirting of the rules.  I haven't checked but perhaps they may consider their own Twitter account:

  • Pluck your strings for our latest cellist commit / alto choir diva from Range 5 West.  BIG time soundalicious.  #BaddaBingGottaSing
  • Whoa Betty!  We dun nabbed a 30+ ACT from our rival's turf - ain't that smack!  #EnglishDeptRules

If I were to give my two-cents, I'd suggest the NCAA reconsider their electronic communication rules policy

Sincerely yours,

Loras and Nebraska Wesleyan tweet about recruits committing more than other conference schools, but they all do to some extent.  The fact they all word their tweets fairly similar to each other makes me think the IIAC office let the schools know what could and could not be said in these tweets.  It's just a different world today than what us old coots grew up in.

Spring practice for many conference schools started this week.  No news from the actual practice at UD, but I did find an article for the engineering aficionados out there.  Before UD could build their indoor practice facility, they had to come up with a plan for the storm water runoff.

Putting in the storm chambers prior to the build...

And the completed building...
