Dubuque and Bethel tied 28-28 at the half. If you like good defense this ain't the game to watch. But proving entertaining none-the-less.

Not sure what to make of that, but right now I'm happy and off to get a drink!

Nice win for Coach Sieverding!

Got home from the Hope - Monmouth game and want online to catch the rest of the UD - Bethel game.  With about 13 minutes remaining, UD trailed 46 - 43.  I couldn't believe the final score.

Klompen

DD, sorry I have been absent over the last year, but I will try to do better this year.  It had nothing to do with football or how well Central did or did not perform.  I spent my time with what was most important in life and for a change, it wasn't football.  I will message you.

Congratulations to the Dutch on their upset win after a 1500 mile trip to play ranked Whitworth on their home field.  Nice job men.  While everyone would have given Whitworth the projected win based on last season's results, this Dutch fan thought it would be a great game knowing that many of last year's losses were so narrow and the small number of seniors on last year's squad.  Way to focus for the whole 60 minutes plus!  I am very excited for the season ahead, what an awesome start!  I had two relatives at the game and they got their money's worth with that one.  Wish I could have seen it, but yesterday was preoccupied with non-sport things that I had to get through.  I was able to listen to the game from the last 5 minutes of the first half on.  It reminded me of last year's Loras game, except it was against a much better team and the Dutch came out winners.  And speaking of the radio broadcast, there was some really funky stuff going on with the sound yesterday, but glad it got straightened out at the half.  I think it is safe to say that Central College is the only college to have CBS's Harry Smith helping The Voice of the Dutch, Trevor Castle, broadcast the game.

Also exciting to hear that Central Dutch player Corbin Blythe's brother Austin made the final cut and will be playing for the Indianapolis Colts.  I have a new favorite pro team.  Congratulations to the entire Blythe family and thank you for all the amazing football players that have come to Central from your family including their dad.

On the two players transferring from Central to Dubuque, I don't think it is a sign of any problems at Central.  I think most associated with the team expect this year to be one of the best Central has had in awhile.  My guess is Zweifel took a page from the WB recruitment book and decided to have some roofing project done over the summer.   :D

Old Dutch

Good call Klompen, I didn't think about Coach Zweifel's roof.  Whatever the case the Dutch looked real good offensively yesterday.  The Whitworth feed was available from their website and they did a great job broadcasting, multiple cameras great announcers, even some graphics here and there.

Between Dubuque and Central's scores we are beginning to look like the Big 12 conference, 1200 yards/99 points in one game and  1400 yards/123 points  in the other.  I think the biggest problem for Central's D was they were forced into a 3 man rush most of the day.  As coach said, the Pirates were big and strong up front, couldn't get any pressure on the QB.  Don't know if the back end of the D is as bad as Whitworth sometimes made them look.  The Whitworth receivers are big and posed quite a threat.

Gray and Boland are legit QBs.  I think either could lead the Dutch to the playoffs, on this day Boland did better, Coach has a tough decision to make.  Lets remember we didn't have Patrick  Gray in the game.  I hope he's back for conference play, but Groezinger did pretty well in his place.

I will try to listen to the Central radio broadcast, and maybe even the Whitworth video to see if their announcers were as baffled by all the offense as the Dubuque fans around me in the stands were and when I watched the UD video, our announcers couldn't figure out the offensive explosion either.

The Dubuque offense looks fantastic.  Even if Bethel doesn't have the best defense we will see all year, the Spartans looked strong.  Feckley at QB is the real deal.  Strong arm, accurate, and when he needs to can escape the pocket and get positive yards.  The UD receivers/TE go 8 deep with no drop off in performance.  RB play struggled early, but came on in the 4th quarter.  The young Spartan OL did well in pass blocking, run blocking seemed suspect, but that may have been Bethel setting up to stop the run, we shall see.

On defense, I thought the DL played well.  At LB, UD graduated 6 from last years team and it showed early.  By the 2nd half, they upped their game.  In the secondary, UD graduated a 1st team IIAC DB and their returning DB that was also 1st team IIAC went out injured early in the game.  Those losses showed early, but by the 4th quarter they, and the whole defense seemed to have adjusted and started getting stops on Bethel.  D3football noted Bethel would have a strong offense, so I'm hopeful the UD defense will show a return of their strong D next week against Pacific.

Looking forward to next week, and getting a look at Wartburg for the 1st time.

Cheap shot, Klompen.  Make a joke about your own ethics if you want to entertain.

The Knights open the season on the road @ Monmouth next weekend. Do the Scots seem legit, or was Hope that much overmatched?

I saw Monmouth beat Hope two years ago and I think this is a better Scots team, Hope's problems notwithstanding..  QB seems to see the field  well ... and has some good receivers.   Their running attack has good blocking up front and some quick, agile ball carriers.  Good, fundamental football.  Defense was aggressive and disciplined ... D line got to the Hope QB a lot, but that was also the fault of Hope's o-line.  Good linebackers and D-backfield.  On the road I think the Knights will have their hands full.  Monmouth is for real.  Now watch them make a fool of me.

Wow, touchy are we?  Well yesterday was a very difficult day for me, so I am just glad I was able to joke.  If you can't take it.  I'm sorry, but then it was just a joke.

Klompen, I chuckled when I read your post(don't think it was cheap); thought it was a good comeback re: Cetral transfers to Sparty. Most around the program/school @ the time are familiar with the particular situation. Ya have to appreciate humor even if you/your team, etc are involved.

Nice win for the Dutch Sat!

Isn't there a cliche about defenses being ready before offenses?  Didn't seem that way for opening day 2016.  I don't know what I will do if I can't depend on my cliches

Hopefully we can all still count on teams making their greatest improvement between Week 1 and Week 2. :)

The problem is, their opponent improved that week too, so how can you tell?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
