Coe beat Cornell 63-6

UD gets a TD back, down 24-21 in the 3rd quarter
Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

Dubuque wins a thriller 28-24 @ Pacific

The Spartans drive 95 yards, converting a 3rd and 17, as well as a 4th and 12 to take the lead with about 1:30 left.  Pacific then drove to the Dubuque 17 before UD held on to get the win.

You had to stay up past your bedtime for that one DD.   :D  It takes a lot out of a team to travel that far for a game.  Nice to see the IIAC teams doing well out west.

My hunch is that UD won't crack the Top 25 until after October 15 ... and possibly not until after October 29 ... Wartburg.

Go Spartans!
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I won't think about rankings this year until the Spartans can show me a run game.  But I do love the guts I see so far from this Spartan team.  Find a way to win!

Now, if the coaches poll from last year is any indication...  Last year, after their 32 point loss to Dubuque, Wartburg kept climbing in the polls while Dubuque continued to 'receive votes'  The D3football poll I think ended up having Dubuque at 18 and Wartburg 19...so for now I will consider that poll the leader in the industry  ;D

Football statues in Iowa are not just for Hayden Fry anymore.  Central College will be honoring legendary Coach Ron Schipper on Saturday with the unveiling of a statue of him and a former football player on Saturday morning.  If I remember right this picture was taken after Scott Froehle knocked down a 2 point conversion try by Occidental to win the game the first time we played them in the playoffs.  I remember that picture so well, it seems so iconic of Skip when it was taken.

That's a fitting tribute to Coach Schipper.  Many of us remember being in his arm receiving some "fatherly advice". Often in football terms but always a life-long message.  287-67-3 is quite a record but the tenure of his influence at Central surely is a better measure of his success.

Amen to that.

I just posted some new analysis on the site if you guys are interested in checking it out: opponent-adjusted yards per play.

This early in the season, before every team get interconnected by mutual opponents, opponents' opponents, and opponents' opponents' opponents, you're liable to see some funky results. Case in point: Luther is listed as the most efficient passing offense right now. I tried to mitigate overfitting a bit by weighting against my AdjO and AdjD ratings (which measure scoring offense/defense, but should give a good overall approximation for the quality of a team). As teams get more interconnected, that weighting will get removed.

The purpose of this analysis is to be more descriptive, while the main ratings are meant to be predictive, but if you're looking for a little more insight going forward to try to make your Pick 'Em decisions, this could be a good place to start.
