Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Have to correct that the picture for the statue of Coach Schipper was with Michael Morris.  I knew the name on the jersey did not match what I was remembering, but I swear he had the same pose with Scott Froehle once.  Just goes to show it was a good picture to choose as the inspiration.  The statue is not that detailed and to say it is easy to recognize it as Skip would not be accurate in my opinion.  Then again, I am comparing it to wax museum statues that I have seen and that is a completely unfair comparison.  They get to use over a thousand tiny measurements for those.  This had to be done from a one dimensional picture.  For that, the sculptor did a great job.  It certainly conveys the essence of the relationship Skip had with his players.  It is a great addition to the stadium with some rock benches to sit on and reflect on what a great man Skip was and what he did for Central College football.

Spurrier

Don Birmingham did more with less...go Spartans
Why the defense ain't werkin'?

Spurrier...difficult to compare the tenures directly because of the differences in how long they coached and what not, but there sure seemed to be a few good years in the middle of Birmingham's career at UD.  We Dutchmen will honor the impact Skip left at Central and we'll let you do the same in Dubuque.  I don't know much about Birmingham, so where did he come from and where did he go after UD?  It looks like he was a good coach, but a quick google search couldn't find much after his time at UD.
Good luck to everyone today!
Go Dutch!

Birm came from "parts unknown"...or Yankton college where he coached Lyle alzado...he went to McMurray college in Texas...his home state...and eventually became a top salesman for clear channel radio until his untimely death after running a 10 k

At Carlson Stadium in Decorah. Field looks green. Not muddy...yet.
Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

Early on it doesn't look like Central has learned how to stop Loras yet.  Loras leads 15-14.  Dutch had best kick it in high gear.  The second half seems to be our half, but last year we could not slow them in the second half, if anything we looked worn out last year.  This year is a different team, so hoping they come up with a solution.  Their RB is killing us.

Dubuque defeats Luther 30-17. 5WOL was kind enough to give my kids a tour of the campus! Good eats in Decorah as well. Two thumbs up T-Bocks for our pre-game meal.

Central escapes 42-34. Very uncomfortable with our defense, but the offense will be hard to stop. Lots of weapons and I like the spirit and resilience the leaders on the team show.

Spurrier--thanks for the info on Birmingham!  Sounds like UD had quite the man for a few years and many were robbed by his untimely passing.

Go IIAC and Go Dutch!

It wasn't pretty for the Dutch, but congratulations on reversing the outcome from last year.  It looked too much like last year for too long.  Not sure if the Dutch were looking ahead, or Loras just figured something out with how to play the Dutch last year and it was still working this year.  Both the offense and the defense struggled at times, but both stepped up when they had to late in the third quarter with the defense getting interceptions and the offense turning them into touchdowns.  Congratulations to Sam Markham for breaking the career receptions record and for breaking his own receptions per game record for the second time this year.  He originally set it against Loras last year.  Riley Gray had another great game, particularly in the second half confidently leading the Dutch to the end zone with great passing and running.  Of course, having the career receptions leader as a target doesn't hurt either.  I'm not a big fan of always using two quarterbacks, but it does give Boland some great game experience heading into next year and also gives both QBs a chance to see what the defense is doing.

Sorry to hear that Tony Oros had to have knee surgery yesterday, he was having a great start to the season before his injury.  Also hope that starting RB Donny Groezinger is not badly injured.  Not sure what the situation is, but he did not play most of the game.

Showdown in Pella next weekend where one of the undefeated teams will sustain their first loss.  Nice that this year the Dutch can head into these games with some confidence.  Not that today was a big confidence builder, but it was still a win over a team they lost to last year.  Go Dutch!

Next weekend is homecoming for our high school.  Which means parents of 9th graders without driver licenses will be driving kids around.  Which means the Doolittle family will not be in Pella for this match up.  I will however, be firing up the lucky lawn mower a few hours before kickoff to send a little extra karma towards my Spartans  ;D

No time for the lucky lawn mowers allowed!  You must spend every waking moment at ninth graders' command.  Wish you were coming to Pella, I would give you the tour.  If you change your mind, let me know.

Lucky lawn mower breaks down this weekend, Dutch win!
