I would also like to say congratulations to Coach Kacmarynski and the Pella Christian Eagles who lost a heartbreaker to Cedar Rapids Regis 45-43 last night.  So close to a trip to the dome for a school that is fairly new to football.

Congratulations also to the Pella High Dutch who will be making their third straight appearance at the dome on Thursday night facing Cedar Rapids Xavier.  Dutch, don't let Cedar Rapids take both Pella teams out this year.  Defend and go for the third straight championship.  You beat Xavier two years ago, do it again!

Oh, and seniors, if you want to keep playing for the Dutch, there is this really great college on the other end of University Street that would be happy to welcome you.  We would take Eagles too, we are an equal opportunity college.   ;)

Dubuque lost 25 Seniors off of last seasons conference title team.  They then went 8-2 this year with only 9 Seniors on their roster.  And two of those may be able to come back next year.  I believe the UD coaches show mentioned there were 17 Freshmen and Sophomores in the 2-deeps this season.  That makes me optimistic for the future at UD.  Of course now I have to wait 9 months to see that  ;D

Good luck to the other conference teams finishing out their seasons next weekend.  This has been a fun year.  Great weather for the most part.  Competitive games.  Coe seems to be getting better every week.  Good luck to Kohawks in the playoffs.  I'll be cheering you on!

Dubuque/Loras story from the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald...

From the article...
When Loras and Dubuque played to a 15-all tie through one quarter, it looked as though the teams were in for a grind in Saturday's annual Key City Clash rivalry game.

Far from it. The Spartans outscored the Duhawks, 28-0, in the second quarter with two defensive touchdowns from linebacker Le'Devin Smith and Dubuque closed its season with a 60-22 thrashing of Loras at the Rock Bowl.

It's the sixth straight time the Spartans (8-2, 6-2) have beaten the Duhawks (1-8, 1-6), doing so by winning the turnover battle, 5-1, and scoring seven straight touchdowns after falling behind, 15-7.

Can't believe the football season is almost over and I haven't worn a coat yet.  No rain, no snow, let's extend football season!  Maybe Central and UD can have a playoff for second place if the Dutch win next week.

Luther over Knights ?  Wassup?

warthog, what's your analysis?  You have a pretty good idea of the Knights strengths and weaknesses.

My team has a BYE this week.  What game should I follow on my computer?  Who's winning and why?  Any coaches on the hot seat?  Any coaching staff shake-ups during the off season? Recruiting news?  Facilities news?  Conference scuttlebutt?  Anything?

When my alarm goes off tomorrow morning I am going to question the sanity of going to Cedar Falls for the late game between #1 Xavier and #2 Pella Dutch.  A game that should have been for the championship, however we met in the semi finals.  Don't know if you can find it online if you didn't watch it live, but it was a phenomenal game to watch between two very good high school football teams.  Started out a bit slow for the Dutch and did not look like it was going to be much of a game.  But the Dutch got their groove going and it was one of the most amazing games I have ever seen.  Even if you didn't have a horse in the race, this one would be worth buying the DVD, it was that exciting.  The Dutch got bit by the turnover bug and there were some questionable calls, at least if you were a Dutch fan.  LOL  Two teams battled to the very end, heartbreaking for one, unbelievable for the other.

Still stuck on that high school football game and since nobody else is posting...

Pella went into that game without their running back who also starts on defense because of a concussion in practice.  Xavier had 432 yards total offense, Pella had either 435 or 436.  I am looking at a Cedar Rapids Gazette write up that lists both numbers.  Pella's team in numbers was 1/3 to 1/2 of Xavier's and pretty much every player plays both ways.  But without a running back, and apparently there was no good replacement, it was all on the QB for Pella.  Between passing and running he had 430 of Pella's yards.  Behind by two he threw an interception with only 1:45 left in the game and Pella only had two timeouts.

It was so heartbreaking.  Particularly given they called a completed pass to about the 6 yard line out of bounds before that interception and the video board seemed to show the receiver got his feet down.  But there is no review in HS football and it was on the next play that the interception was thrown.  Xavier lost 3 yards on 3 running plays and punted the ball.  With no time outs left and unable to get out of bounds on more than one play, Pella moved down the field and with 7 seconds left were at the 21 yard line.  The final play was a touchdown!  Heartbreak for Xavier, unbelievable for Pella who will go for their third straight championship next week.

Go Dutch!

Klompen, it looks weird to see the "Dutch" with green uniforms  ;)

I didn't watch, but followed on twitter of some that were at the game.  They thought the game had already been won by Xavier.  How's that saying go about counting chickens?

Today we watched the Union of La Porte City girls volleyball lose in the state title game to Dike-New Hartford.  Tomorrow night we will will be tailgating from our house and watching on TV the Union of La Porte City football team play in the state semi-finals against Mt. Vernon.  Hopeful for a victory for our local kids.  I don't think I will need to worry about flipping over to the Hawkeye game...that one will be over early I am afraid.

Of course at noon tomorrow I will have multiple IIAC games up on my computer.  The IIAC really is my favorite form of football to keep track of.

http://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/preps/football/pella-stuns-cedar-rapids-xavier-with-go-ahead-td-on-games-final-play-20161110 has a good article and some highlights, though mostly from the CR point of view.

http://www.kcci.com/article/pella-wins-thriller-to-head-to-3a-title-game/8281081 is the Des Moines station review with the Pella only view.

Neither one really tells the story of what a truly classic game this was, after the first quarter anyway, with shifts in momentum so quick you could get whiplash.
