Old Dutch

Can't wait for another year of IIAC football to get going.  Central offense promises to be explosive again this year.  Can they avoid critical turnovers in the big games?  Can the defense stop the big play?  Those will be the two keys all year to Dutch success.

With our weekly show with Coach McMartin, we've added in Facebook Live.  This first week was a bit sketchy as we had some technical issues with the video so it was shot off a phone and the audio isn't great.

Here is the link to the Central College Dutch Facebook if you want to check it out (scroll down for a couple of videos) -

We'll be doing Facebook Live at 7pm every Monday (except when there is no school (like Labor Day), as it will be pre-recorded), so when it's live we'd love to have you join in and will ask questions from viewers.  Should be fun and interactive!

Also - I know there are a few listeners on this board (and we greatly appreciate you listening and your feedback) - we recorded a new Castle and the Coach Podcast today.  IIAC talk starts around the 1 hour mark.

The 2017 season starts tonight.  Mayville St @ BVU.  Tune in here... https://portal.stretchinternet.com/bvu/

Head over to the pick-ems page and get your picks in.  If the BVU game has already kicked off you can still get your picks in.  You'll just take a loss for the BVU game, the others will count.

BVU beats Mayville St 31-27.  Both schools with new coaching staffs.  BVU has a roster of 79 with 42 freshmen.  BVU gets next week off and then will play Central to start off IIAC play.

I am off to a bad start in the pickems but I still like it when the IIAC is batting a thousand against the non-conference.

Okay, each year I get a little older and a lot slower.  Finally figured with football games starting tomorrow I better check things out only to find Grandview wasn't the only one with a Thursday night game.  That is all I really heard about on TV.

So if I do pick-ems I am already behind in the won-loss?  Oh well, if the Dutch are strong this year, maybe I can gain some back.  I really hate to pick against my heart's team.  Glad to hear the football helmets are keeping the old C.  Maybe the new one is beefier and more muscular looking, but it isn't Central to me yet.  Maybe 50 years from now...

Given the number of years I go back I just want to cry seeing UD picked to win the conference and Central down in 4th.  Oh how the mighty have fallen and I still don't like it.  Time to step up Dutch and defend the tradition that should again be Central College football.

Hey Doolittle sorry to bug out on BB season, but my normal computer went funky for awhile and could not remember the password.  I was able to get in again now, but can't update my e-mail address and password unless I know the password!  I am in the process of moving homes and finding anything at the moment is an impossibility.

Go Dutch, red glasses firmly in place!

Get your pick-ems in Klompen...you'll only take a loss on the BVU game...and I think most picked BVU to lose anyway, so you're not really behind ;)

Whilst I wreak havoc over on the SCIAC page, I thought I'd say a quick hello to all my IIAC friends.  Have a fun season!  I'm still bummed Cornell exited The IIAC.

A quick update for youse all...the Hot Tub business is booming, Heys Jr. is a married, tenured teacher (and having a great time); Senorita Heys is a full time Coach of Track and Field at a prominent SoCal University (Salaried w/benefits!); Rev 3 is a senior at Whittier (hence all the shouting in the SCIAC); and me and Mrs. Heys are adjusting to the emptying nest.
You can't leave me....all the plants will die.

I really like Whitworth this year (especially on offense) but was Central suppose to be down this season?  Whit's defense was terrible last year and had a truckload of new starters in the front 7 coming into this year so I was surprised to see the low output for the Dutch.

So I'm at the UW-L halftime show and I'm impressed with their band. There was a half hour lightning delay earlier and they played some fun music to entertain the crowd while the the team's warmed up. The halftime show is a couple of selections from Queen. Next home game will feature Led Zeplin.

I'm thankful that it's halftime and the music is cooling off the tempers of the Norse fans. To explain, UW-L pulled out to a 17-0 lead. Just before half, Luther recovered a fumble on the UW-L 30 with 39 seconds remaining. UW-L stuffed a couple of runs so Luther threw a pass that was caught for a TD. It was called back on pass interference and Luther's bench was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Both were the right calls. The ball was moved back 30 yard and Luther chose to run out the clock before halftime.

The Luther boo-birds were letting the Eagles (and refs) have it as they processed back to the locker room. That's when the UW-L head coach started jumping up and down, pointing back toward the field and yelling at the crowd.  ??? :P :-[

I understand that there's a lot of emotion on the field for the first game but ...

I should add that the players on both sides were both classy and the UW-L fans were good hosts. It was beautiful night for watching a D3 college football game.

Drive home safely 5WOL.

1st week results...

BVU 31-27 over Mayville St
Coe 13-9 over UW-River Falls
Dubuque 32-26 over Bethel in 2OT
Loras 41-9 over Elmhurst
Central lost 56-13 to Whitworth
Luther lost 27-7 to UW-La Crosse
NWU lost 34-14 to Concordia-Moorhead
Simpson lost 17-0 to UW-Stout

The Central and Loras scores puzzle me.

Well, sometimes that happens.  When you get past the initial sticker shock on that score, you just have to let it go.  Certainly don't like to get rolled on your home field like that, ever, but sometimes even good teams just cant stop the bleeding when the other team gets things rolling.  I think back to the Iowa team that went down to ASU in 2004 and got housed 44-7 (and the late score for Iowa was a kick return for a TD by Walner Belleus, who incidentally went on to play for Dubuque I believe after leaving Iowa).  That Hawkeye team ended up being pretty good (BIG Co-Champs I believe).  Hopefully Central can flush it and regroup...I'm sure this isn't what those 5th year guys came back for.  Was anyone there that can provide some insight?  Was it just a "snowball-effect" or did the Dutch truly not belong on the same field?  I find the latter a little hard to believe given we are just one year removed from an even game last year.
