My thoughts on the grey-shirting for football - If it's on the up and up and they are following the letter of the law, I have no problem with it. It might be a more attractive option in football vs. other sports because the extra year physically is more beneficial than other sports and its a fall sport, so it really only has to be one more additional semester of schooling.

Agree, and they do follow the letter of the law. Any of the schools can do it because in theory they aren't doing anything but soliciting their own students to go out for a sport after their freshmen year.  BTW, UST has the same purchase a locker program but I think the sticker is $2500 and can be spread over 5yrs. I think you should sign up!  ;D

UGH!
Nice season for the Wartburg burger burglars.
Congrats!
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

This has been an interesting discussion about grey-shirting, even if not, in the end, "useful."  It even drew out a couple WIAC folks complain that they only get two teams in the playoffs every year.  My heart goes out to them, surely.

In the end, my college had a great year.  Wartburg finished 8th in the final poll, played Oshkosh tough in the Elite 8, has a quarterback returning next year who comported himself well as a final four candidate for the Gagliardi Trophy and will no doubt successfully head off to medical school after his final (and 4th) year. There were 24 seniors on Wartburg's team this year.  Sorry, but it sorta seems like this is the way it ought to work in a division without athletic scholarships.

Amen OTC, On the plus side, if those schools want to Greyshirt a kid, when you add in the extra year tuition and lost wages (40-50k) it makes the privates much more competitive price wise.  When I was recruiting in the MIAC against a WIAC we used to hope they were talking to a kid about greyshirting.  ;D

Looking at the Wartburg website...when did they add bowling as a sport?!?!
Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

 Hafner steps down at Luther

"It was a tough decision to leave Luther College, but my family and I have an opportunity to teach and coach in the Kansas City, Kan. area and continue our journey closer to our immediate family," said Hafner, a graduate of Pittsburgh State University in Pittsburgh, Kan."

Too bad for LC.

Wow.  Hafner had at least 1 child in high school.  His wife had a nice job in the area.  Spent 5 years building the program and this past year the Norse had their 1st winning record in a decade.  He looked to be the driving force into getting the blue turf installed and finally seemed to get the administration on board and the alumni motivated again.  And then he leaves.  I understand the desire to be close to family and wish him the best.

It will be interesting to see which direction Luther goes now.
