Coach Finstock - "There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that and everything else is cream cheese."

So, uh...
Central and Wartburg look impressive?
BVU and Luther looking at a long season?
Dubuque and Simpson trending positive but jury still out?
Coe and NWU trending down but jury still out?

Central @ Dubuque game of the week next Saturday?

Old Dutch

Next weeks line-up:

Warty @ NWU
Loras vs Luther
Coe @ BVU
Dutch @ Dubuque

Some tough picks, will Loras or Luther elevate their game to avoid bottom dwelling? Will Coe establish its self into the top half  again?  I'll assume Warty will stay focused across the Missouri river. Yes, Central vs DBQ game of the week.  Dutch only needed 22 minutes of possession to score 63 points.  Too early to tell if we should be impressed but Luther was a stout defense last year and the D-coordinator took over.   With DBQ's loss to UWW we still dont know how good the Spartans might be.  I think I just talked myself into a road trip to Chalmer Field next week.

New conference, new moniker for me.  I used to be Klompen, but through trying to get my password reset I got locked out of my account.  So I decided that if I had to start all over, I would change my user name to something more fitting of a tribute to the Central football program and use Schipper Strong.  It also just so happens to be a moniker that I believe is fitting of this year's Central Dutch football team.  To be honest, after a long 8 hour bus ride to De Pauw I didn't have super high expectations for that game played in a driving rain.  The rain hindered both teams and De Pauw had to go half the game without their starting QB who was injured yet the Dutch after a very frustrating start pulled out the win.  I will admit that the QB situation for them could have made the difference, but they way we started that game offensively, I wasn't sure we would not get blown out.  Props to the defense for a very strong game with the offense struggled and the rain had to factor into the passing game which is clearly Central's strength this year.

Go forward one week and a Central team that was lucky to get a win at Luther last year, just pummels them this year without having to put forth a whole lot of effort.  What was it, 4 touchdowns in 2 plays or less drives?  One week the defense is on the field a good portion of the game because the offense is struggling.  The next week in heat and humidity that had at least one person taken from the game just as it started for heat stroke and the defense could not get off the field because the offense was too efficient!  Great job by the Central trainers, Pella police officer and Knoxville ambulance crew in tending to the young woman with heat stroke.  Not sure why Pella's ambulance crews were not able to be available, but the Knoxville crew got their quickly and did a great job.

Back to football.  What I really like about this quick strike Dutch offense is the young players stepping up and playing like seniors.  It is no surprise that Blaine Hawkins the sophomore QB is continuing right where he left off last year.  But there were a lot of holes in the Central receiving corps after graduation, none bigger than that left by Sam Markum.  I didn't know there were a host of Sam replacement contenders in that same sophomore class.  The best news is that they should have 3 outstanding years of playing together to enjoy for the Dutch fans and dread for the competition.  I expected we could be good last year, but did I mention we were lucky to win at Luther last year?  63-0 before the Luther team scored against 3rd stringers at the end of the game.  Wow.  Just Wow.

Doolittle, I was in Dubuque a few days this summer and went by both the Loras and UD stadiums.  I have not personally made it to a game since UD had the facelift.  Very impressive!  I have seen it on the internet of course, but to see it in reality was nice.  Trying to see if I can get some family to head up that way this weekend.  Should be a good game.

Is there a Ko-Hack fan out that can speak to the recent woes of their team?

Was 2016 a fluke?  Taking 2016 as an outlier to the data, from 2014 to date the 'Hacks have played like they have soggy crunchberries.

And before you go there, the annual Cornell beat down does not provide any barometer.

Wish I could make it to Dubuque this Saturday.  It should be a good game in just about perfect weather.

This is the time of year that makes me miss Iowa...mind you, only until the first week of November.   8-)

Big weekend out here in the PRC (People's Republic of California)...There is the annual Viking Festival in the City of Vista.

Finally, a valid excuse to don the Ram's Horns on a Saturday.  In public.    ;D

I am thinking about making my way up to Dubuque this Saturday.  As you pointed out FR, the weather should be just about perfect for a game.  The Dutch have so few home games this year, that getting to some potentially great games in perfect weather is a real draw.  Add to that the memories that a few of those Central player's last names bring back of when their dads played for the Dutch and it is just too much fun to miss.

Purple Heys, it isn't the November games that are so cold, it is the December games that you are too thrilled to be playing in to care that are the most frigid.

It may not provide a barometer, but 19 straight wins of domination has to make you wonder how one can even classify the other as going through "recent woes".  I would only call 2016 a fluke if Coe hadn't had the past success they've had.  Losses to tough Augustana and Dubuque teams this season don't have me thinking the Kohawks should pack in the season quite yet.

Congratulations to Central's Blaine Hawkins rated #7 in NCAA D3 for passing efficiency.  This week's game with Dubuque will be a good test of just how good the Dutch are this year.  Did we get lucky with two easier games or are we getting better every week as is Coach Mac's goal for the team.  I do think they are getting better, though I do not expect Central to out do last week's score.  I think we caught Luther by surprise and the Norse were too far down too fast to be able to play their game plan.  I'm sure BV can relate as the Central and Wartburg games mirrored each other for much of the games.

I wish everyone playing Saturday good luck and good health.  Just in case, Doolittle, stay away from that lawn mower!
