What are the odds that the season decider was scheduled for the last week?  We're having an abundance of big final week games this year.

DBQ1965

With UD Women's Volleyball beating Wartburg for the ARC title last  night,  and the Spartans facing Wartburg this coming Saturday for the ARC football title,  what are the odds of two teams from one school beating their counterparts from the other school for Conference championships?
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

I'm happy my team can be a part of it!

Knights2013

Work trip timed perfectly. Back Friday evening, in the car Saturday morning to Dubuque. No love lose between these two schools (coaches) the past decade or so. Two of my favorite games were against UD in '11 and '12. Here's to another good show down!

Go Knights!

Just a cursory look at the statistics leads me to believe Wartburg has an edge defensively and at QB.  Those two factors can be difficult to overcome. Looking a little further, it looks like Dubuque's D has some games they have played well and some they have not played so well.

IMO, two things need to happen for Dubuque to win:

1. Defensively, they need to find a way to throw Sacia off his game. It won't be easy. His game to game numbers are remarkably consistent. It would really help their cause if this is one of the games the D is on.

2.  Offensively, they need to run the ball.  Again, it will be a battle because Wartburg has played well against the run.

Neither are impossible goals for a team trying to win the conference championships.

I guess the alternative, is that the Spartans say heck with it and turn this into a shootout ala their games against Loras and Nebraska Weslayan. They did win both of those games, so it's another possibility.

This one will be fun to keep an eye on!

Iowa Wesleyan facing difficult descision

Quote from: https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/education/2018/11/05/iowa-wesleyan-university-facing-significant-financial-challenges/1889897002/"A private liberal arts college in southeast Iowa may have to close because of significant financial problems, maybe before the academic year ends in May.  Iowa Wesleyan University's Board of Trustees will meet Nov. 15 to consider the institution's future ...

While the university has doubled its enrollment and increased student retention during the past five years, it "does not have a healthy endowment or extensive donor network...

The university's 990 tax forms show that in 2015 it spent $3.32 million more than it took in. It operated at a loss of $4.57 million in 2014 and $2.45 million in 2013, tax documents show."

Iowa Wesleyan would join AIB in Des Moines, Marycrest in Davenport, and Westmar in Le Mars as recent Iowa colleges to close.  Back in the 70's there was Parsons.

Curious if this is a blip on the radar or a sign of things to come.

Even with an increase for this year over last year.  With 360 first year students, if you had a 78% retention rate you would still have an enrollment of about 1,200 students, which is a decrease.

Simpson better be hitting up the alumni base and really push putting money into their endowment.  Fancy buildings will only get you so far.  You need a strong endowment.

That said, I sure want Dubuque to beat Wartburg this weekend  ;D

My middle daughter and I have a tradition of going to see Dubuque/Wartburg games, but she has a babysitting gig this weekend and is a no go.  My wife said she would go with me to the game...until she saw it might only hit 30 degrees this weekend and is now telling me it might be a better idea to watch the game from the comfort of our living room.  Currently weighing my options...go solo over to Dubuque or watch the game from my couch under a blanket with a bowl of popcorn and a beer.

I would think staying at home affords the option to hop on the lucky lawnmower should the circumstances call for it.  You have to be prepared to do your part after all.

I just saw the regional rankings for Nov. 7.  UD is ranked #9 in the West ... Wartburg is not ranked but, according to the Massey ratings, is a 7 point favorite for the Spartan - Knight clash.
