Hope the other members of the ARC don't vote to kick Wartburg out because of their long-standing success. :)

😜 almost everyone in the conference has  taken a run at Wartburg and they  take it at a challenge to get to WC's level of success. No "coalition of losers" in this conference.
Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

It wasn't meant as a knock on the ARC. More of an eye roll at the stupidity of what's happening in the MIAC.

The MIAC presidents are certainly not coming out of this looking like men/women with advanced degrees  ;D

On the IIAC/ARC front, 20 years or so ago, they went the opposite way and told Dubuque/Upper Iowa/William Penn to get better or get out.  Dubuque stayed and righted their ship.  Upper Iowa left for D2 (and seem to be doing well there).  William Penn left for the NAIA (that move seems to have worked out as well).

At that same time the conference had just brought in Coe and Cornell so it was a net even steven for the conference numbers wise.  I have often wondered if Dubuque had left at that time as well if the conference would have made a push to get Morningside which was leaving D2 and ended up going NAIA.

It seems odd to me that a D3 conference would tell a school to get better, and they would end up going D2, which requires even more of a financial/scholarship commitment?
I could see it if it was a matter of not meeting the D3 academic profile, but I'm sure I'm missing something that sheds light on the Upper Iowa situation.

For Upper Iowa it was a case of differentiating themselves from other schools. They are now the only D2 school in Iowa. They get recruits now they never able to get before. They have also found fundraising levels have increased. Being the only D2 school in Iowa has given them advantages they never would have had in D3 or NAIA.

DBQ1965

Probably a useless note:  I remember when Parsons (now defunct), William Penn, Iowa Wesleyan, and Upper Iowa were regular opponents on IIAC football schedules, and at some point, some if not all of them were IIAC members.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Outside the Crate

All of them were IIAC members at one point (Iowa Wesleyan, Parsons, William Penn, Upper Iowa).

Changes in the IIAC over many years seems to me to have had more to do with the academic profile of the involved institutions, while that is certainly not the case in the MIAC.  Neb Wesleyan, for example, has "the right profile."  St. Thomas, which I also remember as a fairly modest-sized liberal arts college in the 60s, is now a very large institution with a very complex set of academic programs.  They are twice as large as St. Olaf, for example, and beat them in football 97-0 last fall (and that's in a year where St. Thomas finished third in the conference football race!).

I must admit, I'm a bit puzzled by the MIAC presidents' decision.  I realized the breadth of the Tommies' athletic program makes them the perpetual winner of the All-Sports trophy, but that's not particularly unusual and could be seen as simply a challenge for the others.  See Wartburg, IL Wesleyan, Hope, etc.

5 - NWU
9 - Dubuque

Men
8  - Loras
11 - Wartburg
19 - Dubuque
24 - Central

And we now have 102 days until opening weekend of the 2019 football season  ;)

Does the ARC and its members have any interest in going after St. Thomas? Lots of talk about where they will go on the MIAC & WIAC boards. ARC is a one place that has be brought up many of times. Thoughts??
