BVU kicks off the season tonight. Head over to the pick-ems page and make your picks. If you miss tonight's game we will just count that one as a loss and count your other picks.

From the "what the heck" department.

BVU opens the season with a 51-7 win @ Hamline.  BVU take a step up in talent over the winter?  Is Hamline just really bad?  A little bit of both?

BVU had a couple of decent running backs and plays that Hamline simply couldn't stop. Hamline is a long way from competitive -- couldn't do much on offense and struggled to cover the pass and stop the run, so it was a bad combo.

Congratulations to BV on their win last night. Good luck to all the other teams starting their seasons on Saturday. Play well and stay healthy.

Yikes.  Gonna be a long year for the Pipers.

Go Kohawks!
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Wartburg 60-21 over Greenville.  Game started with two Wartburg fumbles and two Greenville scores.  The Greenville broadcast was awful to watch, but...

Despite a slow start, Central got a nice opening win today, 42-12. Hawkins had 24 completions for 299 yards and 6 touchdowns passes with no interceptions. Northwestern had former Dallas Center Grimes QB Damon Clapper doing a good job running the offense. He was good when I watched him play against Pella High and he is still elusive with a strong passing arm. I am glad he doesn't have the level of players Hawkins has to work with or it would have been a much closer game. Strange to see last year's backup QB for Central playing defense, but he is too good to sit on the bench. Great start Dutch. One down, nine to go. For starters...

Luther 26-38 Whittier
Simpson 10-42 Bethel
Wartburg 60-21 Greenville
Westminster 35-49 NWU
Coe 3-41 Augustana
Northwestern 12-42 Central
Loras 3-35 UW-Eau Claire
Dubuque 7-42 UW-Whitewater

I suppose the Luther result is the only head scratcher.  Was hoping Simpson might play Bethel a little closer.  Ditto for Dubuque @ Whitewater and Coe @ Augustana.  Wartburg, NWU, Central, Loras ended up about how I expected.

It was great to touch base with my Whitewater friends on the Dubuque coaching staff.  It was a rough day and I know they're disappointed.  Good luck to the Spartans the rest of the way.

I was impressed with Simpson Saturday. 3 different Bethel coaches mentioned that the score was not indicative of the test Simpson was. They were physical up front, especially on D, Bethel just wore them down by games end. Their QB made some really nice throws when he had time and they've got some skill at WR too. Interested to see where they end up this year in the ARC.

Here's a brief video about Wartburg's new exercise science program, "Elite" training technology, and the new facility:

Nice video.  And while this helps the Wartburg athletes, it also adds an academic major to the school, which is nice in these trying times regarding enrollment.

And in news that will bring a tear of joy to Fannasaurus Rex...BVU welcomes back their marching band after a 21 year hiatus.

Congratulations to the BVU Marching Blue.  I would have preferred a beaver reference but you don't really think of them as being particularly musical do you.  Anyway, with a band and cardboard boat races and free popcorn, I won't be surprised if BV doesn't break some American Rivers Conference attendance records.
