Wow - there goes my pick-ems lead. Never thought I would be thankful for Wartburg winning!  :)

Outside the Crate

Luther's football program had some interesting things to say.  First, it listed their enrollment as 1950, quite a dip from their usual enrollment of 2,600 stretching over several years.  Also, the roster only numbers 78 players with 14 from Iowa.  They list the geographical background of their team members -- something I've never seen before.  Players come from 14 states, but only 11 from MN, 7 from WI, and 4 from Illinois -- Luther's traditionally strong sources of students.  Twelve come from CA, 11 from CO, and 7 from FL.

Would it be impolite of me to mention that Wartburg is ranked 20th this week?

Just out of curiosity, do you know any reasons for why Luther has lost enrollment?  I remember their HC Padilla was at Albion College as DC from 2010-2012 before going to DII Notre Dame College in Ohio, prior to his coming to Luther in 2015.

A declining pool of college age kids in the immediate market area and cost of state schools vs. private schools would be the main culprits.

While most ARC colleges have lost enrollment, it's true of state universities, too.  I think UNI is down 700 this year alone.

As for the reasons, I could make a lot of money if I could prove it...  Demographics are involved, but I think are over-estimated for their effect.  The decline in HS graduates is not as great as the enrollment decline.  I think all the public media attention to loans and college costs is a major culprit.  Community college enrollments are up, so that would seem to indicate that costs are a factor despite the fact that the average student in private colleges nationwise is paying no more than 15 years ago!

Other things to consider.  One can no longer tell how a college is doing by its enrollment.  One has to know what its net tuition revenue is.  Some colleges are spending wildly on institution-funded financial aid.  It takes some tough decisions to keep things in balance.  For example, I know that Wartburg's decline has been well-managed, and they have balanced their budget every year by making strategic decisions that were often difficult.  The other thing is that some show higher enrollments because of graduate students or off-campus centers, so sometimes one is comparing apples and oranges.

Good post Outside the Crate.  I was responding to your post on the enrollment at Luther and had found data for all the schools.  I like your thoughts in the 3rd paragraph.  I read an article recently about Simpson.  They noted they had a budget situation and not a financial crisis.  They had a strong endowment and needed to restructure their budget or the realities of a smaller enrollment.

Things to consider in the financial health of a school.
Endowment size.
Typical annual giving levels.
Institutional debt levels.
Typical tuition discount rates/net tuition revenue.

Now football related news.  If you see a short/fat guy in Dubuque colors with his junior in high school daughter on Saturday...say hello to us.  So far with my daughter and I in attendance in Waverly I believe UD is 0-4.  But we keep believing THIS will be the year things change  ;)

So, Doolittledog, if you see a tall fat guy wearing some orange...say "hi!"  Needless to say, I hope your "track record" is maintained!

Dutch win 52 - 33. Central starters took a bench early in the 3rd quarter. Loras and team better than Central 2nd team today. That will change with time. Loras had some good players and they were regularly ahead of our defenders on passing plays, good thing they didn't have a Hawkins at QB. They had enough to think they could surprise some teams of they come to play.  Really nice punting from Central's freshman McCaulay.

So did Wartburg start their second string today or did the first string run back to their rooms to pick up their game at the half?

Outside the Crate

Wartburg was down 17-0 after the first quarter.  It was not pretty.  But, toward the end of the half Wartburg scored twice in about two minutes to bring the score to 14-17.  In the end, 35 unanswered points by the Knights won the game.  It was like another team was representing Wartburg in the second half.  I should mention that the Knights changed quarterbacks -- Jace Moore, who has been sharing the duties with Noah Dodd, took over in the second and finished out the game.  Dwayne Allen Jr., the top Dubuque running back went out with an injury late in the first, but Kordell Stillmunkes was impressive.
