Congratulations to Central's cornerback, Danny Anderson, on being named to the D3 football team this week.

Outside the Crate

All this discussion places way too much emphasis on football.  Remember that Luther is always high up on the rankings for the all-sports trophies...Loras has been dominant in both men's and women's soccer...Coe and Luther have dominated tennis for both men and women.  One could go on and on with this.  In my view, the secret to success is good coaching, which attracts capable athletes, and some schools are better than others at this.  It's my bias, but I think Wartburg has had a string of really gifted athletic directors who have hired, for the most part, talented coaches.  Thus, their success.  It's true they probably have the best facilities, and that helps, too, but in my experience the best athletes still will go where they get the coaches they want.  The new cross country coach at Wartburg, for example, won a string of conference championships at Aurora in track and cross country, and he didn't even have a track on campus.  He'd win wherever he coaches.

Obscure stat of the day.

Both starting QB's in the Dubuque/Luther game are from Alaska.

Sean Duffy of Dubuque is a Junior from Anchorage

Parker Kizer of Luther is a Sophomore from Palmer

And props to the Luther broadcasters for saying the officials made a horrible call flagging UD for pass interference when the ball was air mailed 10 feet over the Luther receivers head!

If you get a chance, watch the end of the UMHB and HS game...I understand letting the players determine the game but as UMHB was trying to kick the game winning field goal with the clock running...not sure all offensive players were set, I think the defense had 14 players on the field, a bunch of flags thrown and all that was called was a deadball unsportsmanlike on HS coach after the field goal was made...I don't like ragging on officials, but it didn't seem like the game should end like that...I'm interested to see everyone else's opinion

Congratulations to Central's Blaine Hawkins on breaking the record for career touchdown passes at Central. He still has 3 games remaining this year and his entire senior season to add to it. Another fantastic day for Central kicker Jon Alberts who was again perfect on extra point kicks attempted and added two more foiled goals to his stats. NWU has an excellent QB and never allowed the Dutch to feel entirely comfortable. After throwing 50 passes last week, the Dutch gave Blaine's arm a rest today and racked up huge yardage on the ground. Good punts today for Central also. Nice game for the Dutch who were ready to play today and very well coached.

Quite the battle for BV and Loras today.

Central will have to play their best football of the season for the remaining 3 games. Time to turn on the after burners Dutch!

I haven't found the game version yet to see the whole last minute or so leading up to the field goal.  Here is a twitter post of the play.

Yeah, and that video shows UMHB being set.

That gives a bit of a different perspective.  UMHB was set, but are the refs supposed to allow the defense to substitute in that situation?  It doesn't look like they gave them time.  But no different than Michigan getting a last second FG at Northwestern a few years ago.  And Michigan wasn't even close to set when they kicked and there was replay for them.  I'd say let it stand.  They did well to get on the field and for a d3 kicker to make that FG in the first place.

The umpire stood over the ball from 0:11 to 0:04. Feel like HSU had its opportunity.

So likely some gamesmanship from HSU that backfired on them.
