Trouble in paradise?

I think there's trouble everywhere.   I understand ARC schools feeling nervous for the future.  You drop 500 in enrollment and you're talking around $10 million less a year in revenue.  Recently, I talked to a Grinnell administrator who said even their school, with a near $2 billion endowment are concerned.  That one surprised me.  Grinnell has been covering student costs after FAFSA, he said that hasn't allowed for proper investment back into the campus.  He thought the future lies more with professional degrees like nursing and education and less with liberal arts.  We shall see.

Football related, I'm seeing twitter posts now from kids recruited to D3 schools that look just like the posts from kids recruited to D1 schools.  Say they are blessed to receive an offer from school X and then post pictures of the school, or pics of their visit.  Looks like our D3 schools have learned how to put on the 1st class visit for these athletes and given them a rewarding experience.  Fun to see that.

Doing a little off-season research and looks like Wartburg is playing the Gusties and the Scots in Non-Conference games next year, anyone else know who is on the Non-Conference schedules around the ARC?

Central is at Kalamazoo 9/12.

Friends, I am reading (audiobook   ;)The Perfect Pass, American Genius and the Re-invention of American Football by S. C. Gwynne.

I am currently in the Hal Mumme/ Mike Leach era at Iowa Wesleyan College in the old Illini-Badger-Hawkeye Conference.

The book is lots of fun.

Gwynne, who attended JHU, has also written Empire of the Summer Moon about Comanche Chief Quanah Parker and Hymns of the Republic about the last year of the Civil War. Both are excellent.

My book reading these days tends to be audio books while I drive.  If I can find that one on audio I will give it a try.  At least from my perspective, living near Waterloo, IIAC/ARC schools get plenty of press while I rarely get news of NAIA schools.  These days we get a bit of news about Grand View and their sports.  Back in the day I was unaware of what Mumme/Leach were doing at Iowa Wesleyan which is a shame.  They have a great story.

:

Leach has a good story until Texas Tech. From there and after, his story is, indeed, a shame. Too bad. :)

I finished the 8 hour book in 6.5 hours (on 1.25 times speed). I only put the book down twice.

I recommend the book from the "science" of football perspective. The author explains very clearly what principles drove Coach Mumme to develop the Air Raid.  In many cases Coach Mumme took average hard-working athletes and put them in a system in which excellent execution of the system permitted success against more talented athletes.

The account of the 1994 2nd round game between Valdosta State and Univ of North Alabama is very enjoyable to read.
