Since we really have no news this time of year other than schedule releases, maybe a position coach change or two, and kids announcing on twitter they are committing to a school and then we have to wait until the fall to see if they actually show up to that school, I found myself looking up school endowments.  I use Nacubo stats first, schools not listed on there I just did a simple google search, after that any remaining schools I looked up on college raptor.

With the exception of St Ambrose ranking high, and Loras/Iowa Wesleyan ranking low, you see the D3 schools with larger endowments than the NAIA schools.  Not really sure the reasons behind that.  Also, Mt Mercy (where my oldest child will be next fall) seems to be the only non-bible school (Maharishi, Faith Baptist, Emmaus) to lack a football team.  Waldorf, a for-profit school is the only 4 year school I left off the list...or at least the only one I "think" I left off the list.

Just curious. Thanks.

It wasn't financial with the football program.  Grinnell is a selective school with high academic standards.  As has been noted on the D3 boards in many places, you can still have a strong football program at elite academic schools.  Grinnell has strong numbers in other sports and it's not because the other sports athletes are smarter than football players you can find out there. 

I had a conversation recently with someone at Grinnell.  There is a side there that argues for Liberal Arts and a downplaying of athletics and another side that wants to push professional programs and use athletics to help promote the school.  He wasn't sure how things will play out.  He did say there are those at Grinnell that think their 2 billion dollar endowment means they are immune to the challenges in the near future and that he was wanting changes.

Grinnell College will finish semester on-line and closing the campus.  Athletics shut down for the semester.

Not sure its true in all cases but I believe many of the Iowa D3 schools are noticeably older than their Iowa NAIA counterparts.  Examples I know: Briar Cliff started 1936 as a women's college, (co-ed 1966).  Northwestern was J.C. until about 1960 and Dordt started in 1955, I believe.  As far as my Morningside (1894), no excuses, although I read yesterday than Univ of Nebraska Omaha (appx 8,000 enrollment) has just a $57 million endowment.

Also, always been more money in the Eastern half of the state as well as population.

Thanks BLynn. And I believe Grand View was a JC until the 60's as well, which would explain theirs as well. Another story I've heard, and have no idea if it's true is the Loras endowment is low because they would get funds from the archdiocese of Dubuque while St Ambrose has a large endowment because they they didn't get those funds. But again, that might not have any truth to it.
