What are the chances that rumored Oxford vaccine could be ready by September? Would it be available in sufficient numbers to make all our dreams come true?

What is your second favorite sport? Mine has always been basketball, but Central can't seem to keep the team healthy enough to be competitive for the full season. Softball is sliding into second, pun intended. Really hated seeing the season cut short just when things looked promising for Central.

How do traditional colleges account for students not being on campus financially? Will students stay with the private colleges if they don't get the on campus experience that makes our schools so great?

Where was this free time last night when we were swamped? It is either keep posting or Amazon and I only received one stimulus check!

Basketball has always been my 2nd favorite to watch.  Easy for me to watch along while I try to write reports.  With my daughter being a softball player, I've become a big softball fan and started watching ARC softball games on days when i'm in the office.

I think come the fall, if we have a 2nd wave and deaths have doubled or worse, we won't have sports.  If by fall we have a vaccine or if things have mellowed, colleges will announce business as usual and sports will be back.  I think these schools will have to do that or we will see a whole mess of them go out of business.

Last fall the UD president predicted over the next 5 years we would see 5 Iowa schools shut down.  If you throw a long term shut down like this covid virus I would think that could double the closures and that could happen in the next 24 months.

But I am an optimist, I think we have good news by fall and we have college sports.  Students will happy to be back on campus and things like the Central lemming run and college homecomings will really be appreciated this year.

1984 Stagg Bowl Central vs Augustana.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfjjEhG0aAc

Wow, great find. It's awesome watching these classic games/teams that we've heard so much about over the years.

It's crazy to see the starting lineups. Central is basically 230 lbs at every Oline position, and Auggie has a HUGE 260 lb OT  :o If I saw an incoming freshman on the recruiting list for Bethel and saw 230, my immediate thought would be, well he'll be a little undersized but if he works hard could see the field as an upperclassmen. And if our starting OT was 260, I'd fear for my QB's life.

Also a chuckle, when they discuss Central's more balanced offense, and then list starters and talk about how their two QB's combined for 1,300 yds passing on the year.

How times have changed! These teams were stocked with talent and had great players, but it's remarkable how much strength and conditioning has changed things. And how much bigger/faster all of these players would have been if they'd followed today's programs.

Thanks for posting this.

I had a video tape of the 1988 Stagg Bowl where Ithaca beat Central.  A friend recorded it for me since my package didn't include which ever obscure cable station carried it. It even included the half-time show which featured some pretty fancy dance team moves.  It accidentally got recorded over sad to say.

Sorry about your tape getting recorded over. No big deal on losing the game. There are lots of games.
But losing the halftime show with the dance team. That's catastrophic. Hang in there. Maybe sometime , when you least expect it, another dance team will appear on a halftime show. And you will say, "life is good"! 🍺 😷  ;D

If you ask some of the older St. Olaf alumni Luther is their biggest rival.  The 2 schools played baseball in the 1890s for St. Olaf's first intercollegiate sporting event if memory is correct.  It is usually a fun time when those two schools meet in athletics.  I have even heard smack talk regarding the choirs.

How about...

Favorite win you witnessed?

Worst loss you saw in person?

I was at the 1984 and 1988 Stagg Bowl games. Yes, times have really changed! Who ever would have thought a team could get to the championship game with a 4th string QB? Let alone not get crushed! Wait did we get crushed? The mind is going ???I

I have been around too long! My favorite win was in 1974 when we beat Ferris State on a hail Mary pass with 8 seconds left. I also loved the double OT win over Augustana in 1988 to allow us to go to the Stagg Bowl. Augustana had been a thorn in our side for a long time. They were the precursor to Mount Union. Of course last year's wins over Wartburg and OshKosh were also exciting. Winning the Stagg Bowl wasn't bad either. ;)

Worst loss was to Dayton in the playoffs. Saddest loss was to US last year.

That was a high school dance team and they were good. It was exhausting to watch! Ironically, they were from Central High School in Phoenix City Alabama and were dressed in red!

Conference Play:
Best Game
Wartburg Homecoming 2000 vs BV, it was a weird day with snow during pregame, rain in the first half, then about 75 and sunny during the second half.  Wartburg played crappy all game and trailed 20-3 going into 4th quarter.  Que Tyler Molstre and sweep left...we ran the same play, a toss sweep to the left on every play of the next 3 possessions, and scored rushing touchdowns of 20, 25, and 45ish yards, but missed the extra point on the last one.  BV got the ball back and got into Wartburg territory and their very good kicker missed a 45ish yard field goal, wide right to end the game 23-20.

Worst
Wartburg @ Central 2019...tough start, shell-shocked at halftime looking down the barrel of a 35 point deficit against a team built to hold a lead like that, and then the comeback, only to lose in overtime.  It was without question the most interesting game to watch, highs, lows, great plays, bad plays on both sides.  But man that was a tough way to lose a game...That one will be talked about for years.

Playoffs:

Favorite Win was 2013 Wartburg @ Illinois Wesleyan First Round Playoffs...Their coach was quoted saying they "liked their draw" and "it's easier to win in the playoffs because teams aren't familiar with you"...Their quarterback and receivers were talking some serious trash on twitter...we showed up on a crappy windy day that was about 25 degrees and proceeded to run for 5 touchdowns en route to 274 net rushing yards to their -5, we ended up winning 42-7 on a day we were 20+ pt underdogs...That was pretty fun.

Worst Loss...many would think I would pick the Whitewater meltdown in 2014, but that was on us and if we played better down the stretch, it was avoidable so I can live with that.  The worst loss in my book was in 2003 to Linfield.  We got destroyed the previous year 52-15 by Linfield, but in 2003 we went toe to toe with them for a full 60 minutes.  Played a tough, sound game with not many mistakes, then gave up a 2 minute drill which ended in a 30+ yard field goal to get beat 23-20...the real sour grapes were felt later in the playoffs when Linfield got beat by St Johns the next week 31-25, and St Johns went on to win the whole thing.

The hardest game to play as a fan is the "what if" game, but 2003 and 2014 along with 2017 were the years most Wartburg fans thought they had the best shot at the whole thing...so it still leaves a sour taste.
