BV's spokesperson stresses strong endowment

BVU Director of Communications Kelsey Clausen adds that the BVU endowment portfolio is very diversified and is holding up quite well. She says BVU is currently outperforming the overall market with their returns.

Merchant had been very active on twitter and other platforms advocating for BVU.  Interesting development.  Curious to know the back story on this.

I have some relation in the Storm Lake area, and the word around the water cooler was there was an "inappropriate extra-marital relationship with a non-student on campus"  Not trying to spread rumors, just letting you know what is being said in the area.

Well, as bad as that is, I guess I'm happy the school itself isn't in some sort of trouble.  It was just the president messing up.

Anyone know if any other schools are changing the schedule for classes up as Luther has? I actually think it is a good idea to the extent that if they try to bring students back and things go south, they might get one "term" done. They could also rotate students on and off campus based on if they have classes that require labs, etc.

Not ARC, but Notre Dame announced they would condense their schedule.  Start a couple weeks early, have no fall break, and end the semester at Thanksgiving.  Get the normal weeks for the semester in, and then send the kids home early.   That way they are limiting the coming and going from campus.  Keep them all there and then send them home for an extended break.

Not in the ARC, but Beloit announced something similar a while back.

Outside the Crate

Good news at Wartburg.  The Board yesterday approved the immediate construction of an addition to the Wartburg-Waverly Sports and Fitness Center that will house a new Dept of Health and Human Performance.  It includes a strength and conditioning facility for athletes with the latest technology as well as labs for the program in exercise science.  $ 3.2 million have been raised so far.  Mike Murphy '89 made the latest $ 1 M gift.  He's the father of the "Murphy girls" at Wartburg (Megan '08, Miranda '08 and Riley '21), all athletes.

Did "community hours" complicate schedules?

Nebraska Wesleyan to start fall semester a week earlier than scheduled and continue on campus until Thanksgiving.  Then complete semester online.

That's an interesting approach.  Seems backwards.  The University of Melbourne where my eldest goes to school is starting the first two weeks online next semester and then going to in class.  I wonder what NW's reasoning is.

My understanding of the strategy is to isolate the student population and limit "mixing" with other communities during the semester.  Much like the Notre Dame model, the idea is once students get to campus, they won't go home for fall break or thanksgiving break and will have an extended Christmas break.  That limits the "coming and going" of students on campus and lowers the risk of a student going home, getting exposed to the virus, then bringing it back to campus.  Since the usual course of the virus is 12-14 days, it will prevent a student from going home for a week, getting exposed and returning to campus with an active infection that will then spread throughout the student body.

Quick questions ...How do you think they would handle possible visits on weekends by, for example, one's out-of-town (hometown) girlfriend or boyfriend? Possibly the same way if spectators are allowed to football and other sports this fall? Allowed or not allowed and if so, what protocols, etc.?

I like what NWU is doing in that it does reduce the back and forth issue and it has the students back at home during the period of time when flu season kicks in. If the flu/Covid combo is as bad as they say it might be, the students are already home and transitioned to online classes again. Still doesn't solve lab issues for science classes, but the plan makes sense in a number of ways.

It's all allowed. They aren't imprisoned,  the goal is simply to limit the longer periods away from campus.. Personally I struggle with using this model and still having inter-collegiate sports, seems contradictory to me, but I guess some limits are better than no limits.

As someone working at a hospital and receiving a notice yesterday that one of the nurses I worked with has Covid, I think we are opening everything way too fast. I see no way to safely bring the students back or have spirts with fans in the stands. Central should have a fantastic year this year. The softball team already missed out on playoffs in the spring, I want the players to get their season. I look at how cases are ramping up in Iowa though and it does not make sense.

BTW I am thankfully fine and the exposure was two weeks ago. Dodged that Covid bullet.

14 weeks until ARC football...98 day!
