Outside the Crate

Did you see that Wartburg has announced that all students enrolled in the coming year will be able to register for a fifth year tuition free?  Interesting idea.

I think it's brilliant and it shows they want to do the right thing for students. It certainly should help out athletes if they want that one more season and students in majors that require lab work or other things that can't be done effectively remotely or were affected in the spring. Good on them. It's not perfect of course, still have to pay room and board, probably a pile of fees, and students are putting off life decisions, but it's a good middle ground offering that shows that the college higher ups aren't as tone deaf as some of their peer group appears to be so far.

The Iowa coronavirus page does not count any rapid tests at all because they don't go through the state hygienic lab or aren't PCR. They are under counting and playing with the numbers to make it look better than it is.

Good move.  With the world we are living in right now, colleges need to think outside the box (or Crate) to retain students and bring new students in.

And the Dubuque schedule has been taken down.  So does that mean schools can't play at all?  Or they can play, there just won't be any championships?

I don't believe that this decision would impact the ARC or individual schools choosing to try to play games this fall. Seems to be a lot of flexibility for teams to do that.
With this decision and basically everyone else either cancelling or trying to give spring a go, I wouldn't be surprised if the ARC (and those Michigan schools) follows suit though.

There is this to consider for ARC teams.

Iowa HS baseball just ended.
94% of teams were unaffected
96% of teams finished season
all infections reportedly mild
fans were allowed all season

The Board of Governors reclassified the NCAA return to sport guidelines as requirements, so that's a significant development.  That doesn't prevent the ARC from thumbing their nose at those guidelines/requirements and rolling the dice with consequences (if there would be any), but the expectation for safe return to sport has been pretty clearly set with this mornings Board of Governors release.

I'm really surprised the ARC is the only D3 conference playing football.  My sense is that this represents a pretty good hit potentially for some small colleges that depend on football for their enrollment.  Will players show up even though they can't play?

"Now that the fall sports have been effectively called off almost everywhere, it seems likely that many fall student-athletes will choose to take a semester off of school. Even though eligibility wouldn't be affected, the cost of spending another semester on campus is likely more than many student-athletes can bear.

Without fall student-athletes enrolled – and in many schools, without fall student-athletes actually living in dorms – many schools will run up huge deficits. Colleges generally make money on room and board, and not having that will be a big impact to the bottom line.

Higher education is already in a position where a shaking out of schools is inevitable. At the Division III level, MacMurray College closed its doors in the spring, Johnson & Wales is closing its Division III school in Denver, and Pine Manor is being absorbed into Boston College. Wesley is en route to being purchased by Delaware State and may end up losing its athletics program in the process. And if a number of schools see their fall athletes spend a semester unenrolled, you may see more. There are a number of schools which simply cannot survive without 100 of their student-athletes."

My tongue is only partially planted in cheek.  If the Big Ten and other conferences move to the spring, could the ARC get a 1 year TV deal for their games?  I think I remember some D3 games being aired during an NFL strike back in the 80's...but my brain is fried and that might not be correct.
