DBQ1965

This is the year I turn 80 ... 2 days before the Spartan - Duhawk clash.   This means I can be an old stick-in-the mud when it comes to long held habits.  So, I've been searching high and low for this coming season's Street and Smith (it might still have a connection to The Sporting News) College Football issue and none is to be found.  I've seen the other publications but they are poor contenders when it comes to anything DIII related.  I know this season's Pigskin Kickoff will tell me everything I need to know about DIII football but I'm impatient.  Has anyone seen the Street and Smith issue floating around out there?

Go Spartans
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

The cigar store in Waterloo had Lindy's and Athlon, but no Steet & Smith's or Sporting News.

I'm of the opinion that the NCAA's proposed change in allowing D1 players to be compensated for their name, image and likeness will radically alter in material ways the principles of intercollegiate athletics.  Do our fellow citizens, who have brought this into being largely through state legislatures, understand that this opens the door to endorsement deals, private training and camps, personal branding activities, autograph sales, social media enterprises, compensation for personal appearances, etc.  There are going to be all kinds of firms that specialize in NIL (name, image and likeness) support for student athletes. I predict this business is going to attract an abundance of really sleezy guys and will quickly get out of control.  We are going to see the quarterback from the University of Whatever showing up for the unveiling of the new electric Cadillac after spending the morning signing autographs in his dorm room.  And, what's going to happen to the landscape for recruiting?  If I'm a greedy 18-year old, and looking to "brand" myself, do I prefer Miami or Los Angeles or Ames?  UNI doesn't have a prayer.

Big news at Wartburg.  Rick Willis, Head Football Coach and Lowell J. Walker Endowed Director of Athletics, has been promoted to Vice President for Student Recruitment.  His leadership in the department has led to 127 championships in 17 sports in 16 years, including 19 national championships in 4 different sports.  His football record is 185-46 (.801).
Willis' successor as Head Coach of Football will be Chris Winter, who is in his 16th year as an assistant coach.  Winter is a 2004 Wartburg graduate and has been defensive coordinator since 2011 and Assistant Head Coach since 2013.  Winter is very popular with players, a tenacious recruiter, and the husband of Wartburg's executive director of admissions.  Wartburg fans have expected Winter to be the next head coach of Wartburg football.
The search for a new athletic director will be undertaken during the coming academic year.

I agree with both of you. In addition to your comments, I have also been waiting to hear comments from the general media, those selfish, greedy money seekers and companies who were pushing for this as well as Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court who finalized this decision those people, as to the athletes being aware that they will have to declare their earnings as well as pay taxes  (local, state and federal) on their income from these deals. There had not been one word said or printed about that at all, at least none that I have seen and I have been looking closely for such for a long time I do not believe that many of these athletes realize this and can't wait to hear them begin whining and complaining about it. Moreover, and unfortunately, I doubt that  many of them won't even know how to fill out a tax form  and they will be further complaining when they have to hire tax experts or companies to do that for them and having ro pay out some of their income for those services.

I have to agree with one of the writers for Sports Illustrated who said in an article today (and I am not a fan of that magazine nor have been for a very long time), that this situation will now be a "cluster" and the NCAA is not the only one who contributed to this mess. Already today, there have been many athletes who have signed deals, some of which are quite ridiculous, IMO.   There is plenty of blame to go around for all parties involved, IMO also. Indeed, this will be a mess. Very sad.

I reckon after the hoopla dies down it won't be that different.  Not for the majors, anyways.  They still have exclusive marketing rights over their programs, etc, and that will be valuable.  And this opens up a million ways for boosters to legally get cash to the star players.  It will, as with most things, make the rich richer and the poor poorer, I suspect.

How it filters into the lesser programs will be interesting to watch, though.  Programs where a star athlete can compete with the school itself for limited sponsorship dollars.  Will that situation arise?  Dunno, but I think it could.  We'll see.

How many years do you think it will take before someone successfully challenges the ncaa's limit on eligibility?  Why can't a guy go to school for 12 years and earn a bundle?  Why is he forced to the nfl or on the streets all in the name of constraining the labor supply?  This ruling is just short of making the declaration of professionalism for the draft a farce.

I bet the lawsuits are lined up all ready. They're just looking for the right person to stand out as a test case for success.  Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to find Power 5 schools are looking at ways to compete with the nfl as new professional leagues.  Roll with it Power 5. It's where this is heading.

I'm old, and usually wrong, but I think this NIL situation will lead to a lot more headaches and a whole lot more cheating in the system than some seem to think.

A Simpson tennis player with a sense of humor is jumping on the NIL bandwagon.

This tweet by the Simpson tennis player is brilliant.  I love it!

Texas and Oklahoma are leaving the Big12 for the SEC.  The money is about to get real in the conferences with enough popularity and cash to be professional.  The rich will definitely get richer.

Which makes me even happier to follow schools in the D3 world.

Wartburg's football roster is posted -- and there are 160 players listed, representing a large first-year class and a number of fifth year students as well.  I'm sure there will be some changes, but it's probably close to their largest-ever team roster.  Meanwhile, Matt Sacia, Wartburg's MVP quarterback in the Class of 2019, and two-time finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, will enter the University of Iowa Medical School next Monday.  It's great to see top-flight athletes excel in their studies and careers.  Matt was one of 129 golfers in attendance at Wartburg's Booster Club Golf Tournament.

For anyone watching the Field of Dreams game Thursday night.  Four Warthogs from the 303rd Fighter Squadron will do the pregame fly over.  All 4 pilots are from Iowa.  Their leader, Lt. Col. "Deuce" Siems is a UD grad.
