Lorasgrad- Thanks.

Hope you aren't taking my comments personal.. I am sometimes a very vocal guy in support of Loras, especially the football program

thehouse76

well alrighty then...
I think that Loras' work ethic just went up a few points with the new higher.  Coach K was great and brought great energy to the players, he will be missed.  Now to focus that energy into a great strategy to win games and without the coaching/playing just hard enough to win.  This is a great pick up.  Now about Loras and getting the Illinois schools interest.  Coaching in Illinois I have found out that it is difficult to get the aid as Confused talked about.  If the family has the money to pay the whole way then it lies on the parents, high school coaches givinng tape and calls themselves.  I had it great during my recruiting process because my hs coach made calls for me to get schools interested, that is how it works.  Getting the kid in for a visit always helps too, if the kid doesnt show interest in the school and tells the recruiter that their school isnt even in the top 5 of schools, then do you take all that time to get to #5? I think not.  Just a few cents in on it.  Im out, House
Ok Ok ok lets just take this one foot at a time.....

Havn't heard much on recruiting, even before the coaching opening.

With all of the coordinators intact, I would guess that the offense and defense won't change drastically, so recruits could still expect the same style of play.

Two-time IIAC MVP Fredrick Jackson rushed for 96 yards and the go-ahead touchdown as the Rhein Fire maintained their perfect start to the season with a 20-10 victory over Cologne Centurions. Jackson, allocated by the Buffalo Bills, made his yards on 27 carries. He also had two receptions for 13 yards.

After three games, Jackson is third in the league with 207 rushing yards. He also ranks third with 316 total yards from scrimmage (including 109 receiving yards).

P.S. For the record, CooCoo and I made up, but we never kissed.  :-*
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

As a fellow Catholic Leaguer myself and soon to be alum from Loras who just played my last year of collegiate football, i know from personal experience that Loras recruits the chicago area.   I was recruited here along with a fellow teammate both from high school and college.  I also helped the coach who recruits the southside and the burbs with mapping out which schools to go to on certain days because a couple of them are only a couple miles apart.  So along with Confused who has Loras recruiting experience.

Good for you.  Now that you have all the free time on your hand with your college career done,, go back and look at rosters from the 70s and 80s and if you are real ambitious go back and look at them from the 40s and 50s. There were alot more than 5 CCL'ers on a team of 100 back then.  There used to be a least 5 on the team from your beloved brother Rice.  There have been alot of us involved in recruiting for Loras for a lot of years.  We can all drink the Loras koolaide but the reality is Loras has not cultivated the CCL.  Blaming it on financial aide is a lame excuse.

The Show

The Beaver Football family has experienced a loss this past weekend.

Steve Swenson passed away while playing basketball at a charity event at Schaller-Crestland High School on Saturday. Steve collapsed onto the bleachers and he stopped breathing, CPR was administered and paramedics came and took him to the hospital in Sac City. The exact cause of death isn't known and they are still waiting for the results from the autopsy.  It is believed to be some sort of heart attack.

Steve just turned 27 on Friday.

I had the privilege of playing football and running track with Steve at Carroll High and then joined him at Buena Vista to play football.  He was a great teammate and more importantly a great individual, on and off the field.

Let's keep Steve and Steve's family in our thoughts and prayers.

My condolences to the Swenson family and the entire Beaver football family.

Was looking at some old threats and just got an idea....

Anyone care to take a crack at makin' a fantasy team for the IIAC teams??

Post 'em up!

A coach with mediocre success takes over a mediocre team.  Sounds like more of the same at Loras. 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th place.  Congratulations.

Loras70sGrad:

Explain to me why you think a D3 Illinois school can give more aid to an Illinois kid than an Iowa D3 school or why an Iowa D3 school can give more aid to an Iowa student.  To the best of my knowledge no private college has such a thing as in state or out of state tuition.

If Loras isn't recruiting the CCL, I would guess they have chosen to go fishing where the fish are.  Perhaps the urban kids from Chicagoland just aren't quite as interested in coming out to rural Iowa as they once were.  Besides being of a particular faith doesn't lock in a kid like it once did.  If Loras had all the Catholic kids that have played for Wartburg over the last 6 years, the Duhawks might have actually won something.  The Catholic high schools are no longer being run by the priests and nuns that in the past have encouraged student to head to that Mecca of Dubuque to attend Loras or Clark after high school.

Times they are a changing.

Warthog- I was the one who said Illiniois schools are able to come up with some more aid for their in-state students and the same was true for Iowa. I have been told of this be more the one source. I wish I had more facts to share.

But, it probably really comes down to a schools financial aid dept. If a school is not willing to be competitive then they will lose a lot of kids. A gap of 8,000 is a huge gap. I have heard there have been gaps that large between Iowa and Illinois schools.

The "Iowa Tuition Grant" is a need-based grant from the state that is offered to Iowa students that would attend an Iowa private school. I don't think it's offered to out of state students because it's state money. A few years back it was $4,000/ year, now I think it's around $3,600. I've been out of the loop for some time, so it might have changed again. I would assume that IL has something like that for in-state students, but I don't know.
