I will pick Wartburg over Monmouth

Partly because of the mighty Orange playing at home and partly because of them being in the IIAC.  I think that Wartburg will move the ball ok with Hammes running the ball.  He is a horse.  The question will be at QB as others have mentioned. I think the other key factor in the game will be what Coach Koehler will want to do.  Will it be win at all costs or see what he can develop in this game for the IIAC crown.  That is the prize that we all will be after.  I don't pretend to know.  The first two games don't mean alot if you are the IIAC champ but if you are the runner up like we were last year then they mean the world.  So I think that it will be a decision for the new coach.  Does this reasoning ring true with anyone else.  If Wartburg handles them defensively then the new coach will get to do what ever he wants.  How's that for hedging. Good Luck to the Men in Orange.  As a parent of a current Dutchman and a Wartburg Alum I only cheer against the Knights one Saturday a year.  Good luck to all IIAC teams lets have a great preseason.

Charlie,

I agree with you to a certain degree about kids riding the bench at D-1 schools.  On the other hand how can you take a kids dream away.  There are alot of success stories from the Iowa's and Nebraska's with walk on success stories.  It all depends on what the kid is willing to do to get there.  I don't think that kids realize what it takes to achieve at that level.  That is something they have to find out for themselves.  You just have to wish them luck and leave the door open for them.

I've heard rumblings about Sherden at Luther as well. The couple people I have heard this from are pretty reliable when it comes to info.

Sherden got used way too much when he was healthy. He packed 4 years worth of carries into about 1.4 years.
2004-Who is your Wartburg Alum?
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Confused77

Walston- Did you get your statistic on Sherden from lance? 1.4 seems awful precise, but I think it is pretty close.

With out putting his name on here.  If you have a roster of the Wartburg Mens tennis team from 02-05 you will find the only name that corresponds with a current Dutch football player.  I don't want to seem mysterious or anything but careful about names out on the net.  If you need more help I will see if I can think of another clue.

Given the ad on that page, KnightLife, it took me a few minutes to find the picture of the football players.

(Edit:  If the ad isn't for Victoria's Secret anymore, disregard this post.)

With Sherdan,

Is he injured from last season yet?  What was his injury.  Seems like it must have been pretty bad if he is out a year and a half.

The good news:

Two teams in the top 25 and three teams getting votes.

Central and Coe both move up spots since the year ending poll.

The bad news:

four of the top nine teams are from the West.
(UWW, St John's, Linfield, and Occidental.)

regionally Central and Coe are ranked sixth and seveth.

Great to see the IIAC get so much respect! ;D

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I agree CooCoo,

It is great to see that the IIAC is getting respect.  I was surprised with some of the preseason pics.  But that's why this poll is an acurate one they do some leg work to put this together.  It will be fun to see where the teams shake out through the season.  Now the real chatter can begin.

So 2004, with a son at Central, do you still sport the Orange and Black of your hometown?
Confused- I was thinking Sherden got injured the week after the Wartburg game and I think that was week 3 or 4 last year. Hence, my Wartburg education tells me that is around 1.4 years.

Walston,

You must have figured it out.  The only thing is we have now moved to Marshalltown.  Mrs DutchFan changed jobs and we moved down here.  I do get to a couple of football games a year, and still try to make it to a basketball game every year.  I will always be orange and black at the core of me having had 4 boys wear those colors.  I am also happy with the Wartburg education that #2 son got there.  He is now off to DMU this fall to become a DO.  Wartburg and their professor's had alot to do with that.  With the #4 son it came down to Wartburg and Central he just chose the Dutch.  I have been happy with his education there as well.

Agreed. But for each one of them, there are a dozen who quit football or spent four years as practice fodder. A few of them realize they love to play football more than they "want to be a Hawkeye." Or maybe they want to play two sports.

Coe's Blake Borrett is a recent example that comes to mind. While I doubt Blake grew up dreaming of being a Panther, he started out at UNI. When that didn't pan out, he returned to Cedar Rapids and enrolled at Coe where he excelled at linebacker and as a sprinter on the swim team. He was scary good at both sports, and received a quality education too.

The IIAC is full of those kind of success stories.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Yeah, good for everyone but me.  Blake Borret broke my 100 freestyle record that I had held for thirteen years.  It was a 47.98, he went 47.77 if memory serves me correctly.  It also makes losing my 50 freestyle record hurt alot more since that one was broken (not by Blake) by .01 second.  My fifty time was 21.27.  I guess my only solace is that I did my part to raise the bar for Coe College athletics.

On a side note, when are more schools in the IIAC going to add swimming?

p.s. I don't expect an answer to that question on this board.
