i am new to this site and this is my first post, so I thought it would be pertinent to state that i am from Cedar Rapids, and i attend many Coe games.  However, I am in no way a Kohawk homer, I just like small college football and Cornell games just lack something.......I think it is fast skill position players.  I was just curious how anyone that knows anything about this conference thinks that Luther will beat the kohawks this weekend.  I know they are at home, but the last time the Kohawks came up to Luther, under very similar circumstances, Coe had put up 35 points before Luther even realized the game had started.  i know that was two years ago, but my point is that home field is no advantage here.  So these posters think that Luther is a better team than Coe?  I just wanted more than a pick but also something to back it up even if it is just opinions.  That is something that is missing from these sites, statements with something to back them up.  that being said these are my picks for the weekend:
Coe by 14 - too fast for Luther's defense and Luther will not be able to protect Sweers
Wartburg by 17 - Simpson is on the way down and Wartburg's defense is strong
Central by 7 - rock Bowl keeps Loras in it for a while but in the end Central is stronger
Cornell by 3 - Dillon finally has brought some discipline to the Rams and it shows
Iowa State by 3 - If Hicks gets 85+ the Clones win regardless if Tate plays or not

its a pleasure to join this discussion.

joeyice

Central - home, home in the corn
Luther - make the field baby blue and finish 'er off - give Boise a run for their money
Simpson - fluff the grass, watch for the ripple on the 30
BV - official windtunnel testing site for NASA
Cornell - don't remember, no hard feelings
Coe - are we there yet? oh yeah, keep walking, got it.
Dubuque - don't look down
Loras - win or lose, the steep walk down the hill always blew
Wartburg - nice field, chewy too, I'll remember to close my mouth next time

OK, phrase association, not so much word association......and is it just me, or does 'youcan'tseeme' 'notseetherealschedule' ?  I thought the dutch were at stormy pond this week?

Since we're adding other places played:

let's not forget the ol' favorite Upper Iowa Fayette-name Peacocks....all I can hear is Cartman in the back of my mind singing 'in the ghetto...", while we all wondered if and when the creaks and groans of the steel above would finally give way.

Walston Hoover

All I could think of for the Peacocks was.....I should have brought my gun, there's bound to be a deer running through here any second.

Alright, I did pick all the preseason 'favorites' as I stated before. I just have to know everyone's thoughts on these games. I've see from several people BV over Central, and Luther over Coe.
Loras doesn't play Central this weekend, and even when they do meet, it's at Central this year for what it's worth.

Coe - Ghetto

Hey Fightin' Dude to Munch,

Not sure on your definition.

1. it sucks, as in "this field is ghetto."

2. it is literally in the ghetto

Both are correct pertaining to Coe's field.  Just wanted some clarification.

The Hy-vee down the street is called the "Ghetto-vee."
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

The Show

joeyice - speaking of Fayettenam...you remember some clowns got on the same radio frequency as the announcers and were making barnyard sounds?  Not sure how they pulled that off, but it added a nice touch.

I guess it's a toss-up between that and when the middle linebacker finally realized that we were running the same audible 8 plays in a row... ;D
Sometimes You're the Windshield & Sometimes You're the Bug!

Walston Hoover

When I was a freshman working for our campus radio up there. Our sideline reporter was on the same frequency as their PA as well. The sideline reports went over the system.
Not quite as cool as barnyard sounds though.
I did like the Fayettenamese press box though

youcantseeme,
If everyone picked the same favorites, what fun would the picks be? ;D

All right, I will give this a shot to say why the Norse have a chance:

1.  Both teams return a bunch of starters from last year.
2.  If you went to the Luther-Coe game last year in Cedar Rapids, you would remember that the game went down to the last two minutes and was decided on a Luther holding penalty and then a sack on the next play after it became a passing situation.
3.  Luther has been a dangerous but inconsistent 5-3 IIAC program the last two years, which means that they are capable of winning or losing most games.
4.  Luther may clearly be better at QB and WR than Coe, especially if Suckow is a RB.  How these teams match up at RB (depends on how they are using Suckow) or in the trenches may be Coe's main advantage, but I can't say how they will match up since Luther lost its only test this year and Coe hasn't had one yet.
5.  It's early in the season.  Luther may lay an egg like they did in the 2004 Coe game coming off the St. Olaf 2nd half debacle, or they may play Coe tough like 2002 and 2005 or even win like the 2003 game.
6.  I have seen Luther twice and still have some huge questions on defense coming off of the Ole game, but they are a more talented team right now than they were in the 2nd half of the 2005 season.

Coe should be favored based on consistency over the last few years, but I will be very surprised if they don't get tested in this game

Iowa-Iowa State is the opposite.  Iowa is the more consistent program even though ISU plays well in this game.  If the turnover margin is even, a healthy Iowa team is better and the game is in Kinnick.  The chances of Luther winning this weekend are also MUCH better than the chances of Hicks getting 85+ yards, by the way.  Stevie could do it, but I think the odds are about the same as Simpson beating Wartburg.  I am very interested to see how Tate looks, and if he is normal then the question becomes about how ISU can hold up on defense if they can't force turnovers.

ISU wins the game and it becomes 7 of 9.  Iowa wins and it is 3 of 4 for them or 18 of 24 or even whatever the all-time series is.  I get tired of the Iowa-ISU hype most years by about Tuesday.

Since youcantseeme wants some backup about picks, I will just throw this out there for the board to think about in the Luther/Coe game.  Coe is starting a Freshman and a Sophmore at CB against two senior WR's who have started at Luther for 4 seasons, one of whom will set all of the receiving records at Luther by the end of the season.  I like Luther's chances with Pearson and Scheetz versus Breitbach and Roberts.

Luther is also the number one offense in the league with 527 yards per game while Coe is number 3 at 399.  Coe is number one in total defense at 209 yards per game and Luther is number 3 with 241 yards per game.   Both teams are scoring over 38 points a game and giving up less than 18.  Statistically, the Kohawks and Norse are very comparable...special teams and turnovers will be the deciding factors (like they usually are).

And Floyd made some excellent points about the game and games in the previous years.  I know it will be a challenging conference opener for both teams.
Go Norse!!!

dbljay-
I wouldn't put too much stock in yardage with no common opponents.

lorbec47,

Did you go to the St. Thomas game last weekend?  It looks like you were right about Aurora being pretty weak when you watched them scrimmage Loras a few weeks ago.

Any progress on the Duhawk Offense compared to last year or the last few years?

Hope all you guys don't mind another Cornell poster.  Read the board forever but have never been able to post.  I don't live in Iowa anymore so I won't be able to throw much in as to what happens in games, but I've found this is the best place to keep up on whats happening in the IIAC.  It is great to see all the Ram optimism on the board, but one thing everyone fails to mention  is how young the rams defense is.  They are starting two So. at corner and a frosh at FS.  Even if Dillon's wing-t can put up some points the question will be if the D can hold ppl.  Also, I've heard that Eichhorn is done for the season with a foot injury, any confirmation.  But I'm hoping all this new positive atmosphere is really true and the rams can turn things around this year.  And for the part I've always wanted to do, my picks   ;D

Coe over Luther 27-14  Norse keep it tight for awhile but Kohawks pull away in 2nd half
Wartburg over Simpson 35-7  Too much for the Storm too handle
Central over BV  28-7  Dutch are tough this year
Cornell over UD  35-28  Undisciplined Defense vs. Wing-T = lots of points
