"However, I am in no way a Kohawk homer, I just like small college football and Cornell games just lack something.......I think it is fast skill position players."

Youcantseeme...two things.  One you say that you are not a Kohawk homer, yet you say you cant fathom anyone picking against your beloved Kohawks.  I mean they haven't lost a game since '84 so I guess maybe I can see where your coming from.  Then again maybe not.  Two you say that Cornell lacks fast skill position players.  Need I remind you of former player Blue Aldridge who now is playing arena ball.  He wasn't fast, rumor has it they signed him because of his good looks.  Or their former receiver who was a conference champ in track.  He wasn't fast either.  Their current runningback isn't fast either.  He just averages 6.8 yds/carry because people don't like to tackle him.  Their other back, Newmeister, is not slow by any means either.  He can just play qb, rb, wr, kr, and pr.  Don't get me wrong I'm not saying Coe can't hold their own when it comes to speed.  I'd just like to know one thing. What exactly is your definition of fast?

Terrell Owens was asked for one word to describe himself. He said "confident." When asked for another word he said "very."

Walston,
I just threw the numbers in there to show that both offenses and defenses are comparable.  The numbers will have much more meaning after conference play gets started.  I put more stock in the experience of Pearson and Scheetz versus the youth of the Coe corners, which is why I listed it first.
Go Norse!!!

dbljay-
I wouldn't put too much stock in yardage with no common opponents.

Not to mention Coe didn't play too many starters in the second half of the Aurora game and only threw the ball fifteen times..
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Floyd--

I did go to the St. Thomas game last weekend. (Really nice football facility by the way.)

St. Thomas had their way with the Duhawk defense the first 1/2 rolling up about 220 yards of offense. Defense of Loras held St. Thomas to around 60 yards in the 2nd 1/2 until the last 2 minutes. With Loras down 12-7 and the ball on the St. Thomas 31 with about 2 minutes to go Loras is facing a 4th and 2. They run, and end about 2 inches short of the first down. Kid breaks off a long run of 67 yards to seal the deal.

Offense showed signs of life. They moved the ball pretty well, but didn't score on their first possession when a 23-yard field goal was blocked. They moved the ball in other possessions as well.

Bottom line is if Loras plays 4 quarters hard, in both games they win. However, they haven't and are 0-2. They have no one to blame but themselves. However, I'm optimistic that the bye week will help get them refocused. Time will tell.

Oh, and I noticed that Eichhorn only had 1 tackle the first game, and none the 2nd. I'm guessing he is out?

Here, however, is where dbljay21 got it right.

maybe we should rank our picks.

the one you are most confident in rank 1 and the least confident pick 4
example:

1.wartburg
2.central
3.coe
4.cornell

or is everyone already doing this?

Picks for the week:

Central over BV by a lot

Luther over Coe in an extremely close game, maybe like the Norse Dutch game a few years back.  Wasn't that 2 overtime?

Cornell over UD by a little

Wartburg over Simpson by quite a bit

Ash Park

Speed Kills I couldn't agree more. Cornell has had some good athletes at their skill positions but they don't have the depth. Also to be honest it is hard to showcase your speed when you don't have a lane or a hole to run through...or the QB can't get you the ball because he doesn't have time to throw. Get my drift? Of course a back sometimes has to make something happen on his own but not just about every play. If Cornell has been lacking any one position more than the other it is in the line.

From what I hear Eichhorn will not be out the whole season, but pretty darn close. I heard he will be back the third to last week of the season. I haven't heard too much panic though coming from within the program which is good. Not much you can do when something like that happens.

Former Ram

I wouldn't say that the Rams have been lacking in speed from their skill position players.  Previously, when they were recruiting option kids speed was one of the things that they were able to recruit successfully.  I think Lovely, Ditch, Yansky, Knake, and Aldridge and company more than held their own in the speed department.  Numbers 1 - 22 can compete with anybody in the IIAC for the Rams; it's numbers 25 + where they have struggled in the past.  I like the Rams this week against the Spartans.  It's supposed to have been the year for Dubuque to beat Cornell for about the last 3 or 4 years now and they haven't gotten it done yet.  I'll pick the Rams until the Spartans show me that I should do otherwise - although I will say that the UD defense was always one of the more physical to play against - especially Prince.

Luther was in the same situation against Martin Luther, offensively the starters were on the sidelines the entire second half. But, stats really don't matter. Luther put up a lot of points against an inferior team (Martin Luther). They also moved the ball effectively against St. Olaf. The Norse had 7 trips to the red zone and came away with only 3 field goals. The only TD came on drive that did not enter the red zone. I guess my points is you can put up all the numbers in the world, but the game is decided by putting the ball in the end zone. I think Luther has the offensive weapons to move the ball on the top tier defenses in the IIAC, but the question that looms at the moment is whether they can overcome the mistakes to find the end zone.

Good Luck to all teams this weekend and hope for some great games.

Coe - Ghetto

Hey Fightin' Dude to Munch,

Not sure on your definition.

1. it sucks, as in "this field is ghetto."

2. it is literally in the ghetto

Both are correct pertaining to Coe's field.  Just wanted some clarification.

The Hy-vee down the street is called the "Ghetto-vee."

I was referring to the fact that it is located in the ghetto.

I remember back in the day when the Hy-Vee was called "Harlem Hy-Vee."

I'll give the word association thing a try.

BV - Lake Glare
Central - Dragon (although I heard they retired him a couple years back)
Coe - Landlock
Cornell - Union Pacific
Dubuque - Guaranteed Win (always was for Wartburg anyway)
Loras - Bluffs
Simpson - Bad Carpet
Wartburg - Home

Luther was the only IIAC stadium I never got to.  Always ended up that I had a wedding or parent's birthday when Wartburg went up there.

Non-IIACs:
Upper Iowa - Middle of Nowhere
Augsburg - Claustrophobia
Linfield - Beatdown or Old School Awning

Word association:
BV -- cold, lake, windy
Coe -- the 'hood
Cornell -- trains
UD -- blue track, easy win (sorry guys)
Loras -- the Bluffs
Simpson -- bad rug, FTD t-shirts (plagarized from Wm. Penn)
Wartburg -- horrible visiting section
Luther -- (no real memories -- sorry!)
Central -- perfection

Upper Iowa -- players on the wrong side of the field, in front of the visitors
Linfield -- great field, great fans!
St. John's -- greasy burger. :)

I forgot Augsburg, thanks for the reminder Sportsknight, I also forgot Millikin and UW Oshkosh
Augsburg-Its so nice to be in a "working" pressbox with all the people cheering for the Auggies.
Millikin-What a hot day! Oh yeah, the pressbox is air conditioned.
UW Oshkosh-So this is what public school tax dollars will get you.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

davedevine

Walston,
I wouldn't have minded playing @ A/P, I'm pretty sure I would have fit in with you you boys.. I did get a championship, so I can't exactly complain about D-town...

Tony,
I talked to wheels about the ol' road trip and the powdies a few months ago..  your accomplishment on that road  trip is still one of the most amazing things i've witnessed..it could be a Iowa folklore ya know

marines huh?  i'm guessing they're going to pay for you your cheap tuition at BV & Drake?

midget is coming down here Sept 30th weekend if you want to come down with him.. he lives over by SE Polk HS... if you don't like to watch Iowa, the chiefs, college  football in general, gambling, and drinking then you're better off to stay in DM. .Although, it would be great warm up for your boot camp..
