Quick question for anyone who has seen Wartburg play this year:  Is Wartburg's defense that good or are the two offenses they have played against that bad?  Other random thoughts:  Nice win for Central and Coe (a win on the road is always a good thing) and not so good for Cornell.  I guess I will have to wait on making my "Cornell Rams...2006 IIAC Champion" t-shirts.

I have not seen the Knights play yet, although I am looking forward to getting a look at Wartburg this coming Saturday against the Smurfs.  I'm not sure about the defense yet - Simpson's O is not what it used to be, but Wartburg did shutout Monmouth.  I'm not sure how good the Scots offense is, but a shutout is a shutout.

I'm also waiting to see the secondary to echo Walston's sentiment about them being the best Wartburg's had in a while.  I think they'd have a tough time being better than the 2003 group of Cody Kelley, Gene Thomas, Brian McIntire, and Jake Burns.

I have not seen the Knights defense in action yet either, but I have heard from a very reliable source that this group of kids on defense can run around pretty good and really fly to the football.  I think that once they get some more experience they will be as good as any Knights defense in recent history.

WartTrainer:

Depends upon your definition of recent. ???

The boys of 1999 & 2003 may disagree ;)

Warthog...perhaps I should have said could be as as good as any of the defenses in recent history.  I didnt mean to take anything away from the '99 & '03 teams, both were really good.  I am sorry if I upset any members of those teams.

Thanks for the information on T-Bocks.  We had a great time watching the Iowa State/Iowa game. :D  It had the wrong outcome for me, but it was a good game.  :'(  You were correct, good food, cold beer, and nice people.  I sure enjoyed the Schmidt pints.  :P What a mix of people frequent the joint, that was almost as entertaining as the game.  This bar gets my recommendation for anybody visiting Decorah.  8)

I was somewhat surprised you guys would know where a tavern was located.  ??? The library or chapel of course, but a bar?  I'm shocked! :o

Wart trainer,
no offense taken.. After reading your post I knew that the 03 squad was a better, more athletic defense across the board than the 99 squad.. but out of curiousity, i looked at some numbers on the website  and they no doubt prove that theory: Actually after writing this down, they were far superior.
not only did they have better athletes, they ran a completely different defense than we did..  If this year's WB defense is capable of these numbers, they'll have a good season..

99' defense                       03' defense
19.2/ ppg                          10.1/ppg  not too many teams accomplish this
313 ypg                             221 ypg
34% 3rd down                  26%
25 sacks                            47 sacks.. that's sick
29 forced Turnovers..         39 forced turnovers..

that's kinda funny, but i really have no idea where chapel would be. The library on the other hand was a great place to socialize or turn into a drinking establishment.

Walston Hoover

Lets not forget the D of '02, which was several of the same guys of '03 with the exception of a few.
12 ppg
208.3 ypg
21 % 3rd down conversion
43 sacks
22 TO's

Just giving my boys a little love
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

sportsknight

Just got done looking at Bob Loslo's pictures from Saturday's Wartburg-Simpson game and it looks like the Knights were wearing a patch of some kind on the right chest of the jerseys.  Kind of looked like the IIAC logo, but the pictures were too small to get a good look.  Can anyone that was in Indianola Saturday shed a little light on this?

Pretty creative with the field names/word association, etc. But there are ghettoes in Iowa? Get out!

Don't be fooled, K-Mack. Ghettos are to Iowa what Cedar Rapids is to a "big city." Some of these posters must never have left Iowa. Plus, it's a dirty recruiting tactic to portray Coe as urban and unsafe. To the contrary, our students find the college's proximity to be ideal for internship, networking and post-graduation employment opportunities. And there are more off-campus recreational options than any other IIAC school.

That's funny.

"Cedar Rapids" is usually my stock city to throw out there when comparing East Coast place A to Random All-American City B in conversation ... Like "Why would you be on vacation in Boston and go to Applebee's? Everywhere from here to Cedar Rapids, Iowa has Applebee's. Go somewhere unique!"

Anyway, are you saying that's the city grads go to for jobs, etc.? Like Indianapolis to Wabash and DePauw or Richmond to Randolph-Macon and Hampden-Sydney (not that you would know, huh?)

Does "off-campus recreational options" mean "more bars?"

That does sound like a dirty, if not faintly racist (if you believe "urban" roughly = "blacks & mexicans who you should fear") recruiting tactic.

Anyway,
I had to get here early this week so I didn't get lost 20 pages back. Also, I wanted to pat myself on the back for the Dubuque-'Nelly pick.

Who's got the overall numbers on the picks? If no one, we need to compile them so I can see if the guy in Virginia is whooping all the native Iowans at their own game.

(that'll get the trash talk going)

One of these days I'll learn not to post first, ask questions last.

Although you got me for 3-1, my picks are at the bottom, quoted. Which one did I lose? I think I nailed all four games.

Did I miss the joke?

2 p.m. is what it says on the D3scoreboard page ... Eastern Time, kiddo.

Just means you Central Timers are smart enough to do math. They gotta keep it simple for the "sophisticated city folk" too busy to do anything but glance at start times.

warthog,
glad you enjoyed yourself...and for the record, I DO know where the chapel and library are, but I just chose to spend my time at the bars :D  As it turns out, I get along better with the people at bars.  Who knew ;)

Sounds like the Coe/Luther game was another battle, reminiscent of last year's matchup at the Dirtbowl, Luther down a score with the ball at the end of the game.  Congrats to the Kohawks, they always seem to be a tough matchup for the Norse.
Go Norse!!!
