The loss to Luther last year seems to have fueled the rivalry quite nicely again this year.  Talking with some of the boys back in Wave-town I have no doubt the troops will be ready to go.  The basketball rivalry has suffered as of late due to the face every time the teams play it is in the middle of the week.  I think it was back in 2004 when administrators from both schools thought the chanting across the gym got out of hand.  It's never been the same since.  I, for one, loved it.  It's a rivalry and the students need to show their hatred.  If you're embarrassed by the remarks then don't go to the game.
As for saturday....
Coe 21 BV 3
Dubuque 17 Loras 14  (not much of this rivalry talked about on this board)
Simpson 10 Cornell 3
and the game of the week
Knights 24 Norse 7- The Knights are back and will take out revenge from last year's upset.  Starting up another 15 year streak Saturday.  LUTHER SUCKS!
THIS IS...OUR HOUSE!  WHOSE HOUSE?!...OUR HOUSE!  WE RULE....OUR HOUSE!!

I'm not defending that at all.

Chanting deflamatory slurs across the gym is another part of the Wartburg tradition to be really proud of, Walston."
Oh don't worry we are.

Quick Story-
I think the year was 2002- Luther guy shows up to basketball game with sign that reads "Your dads work for our dads ( I found that one particularily funny since my dad employed a luther grad, and now its even funnier since I know several luther alums)
A few minutes later one of our students shows up with a sign that reads-"Your moms work for us"

knightlife06,
I am not embarassed by the remarks made by the students at your institution.  And why should I be?  Its your school.  I just think they are inappropriate.  The hatred the Wartburg students were displaying was a hatred for homosexuals, which extends far beyond Luther College and is a group that doesn't include MOST of the students at Luther, including myself.

Walston,
Now that is funny and I can appreciate creativity like that.  I love the intensity and the passion of the Wartburg fans.  I wish we had more of that at Luther because I think its one of the reasons your athletics are so successful.  Its when the rivalry resorts to slurs and vandalism that it becomes inappropriate.  And thats what I have problems with.
Go Norse!!!

You are aware of the Luther stereotype?
I don't know how its possible up there though, the one thing I'll give luther is that I've always had a thing for blonde-haired, blue-eyed babes and there is no shortage of them up there.

Yes, I am highly aware of the Luther stereotype.  I have friends who are of that persuasion, some are even in my fraternity.  And I am a huge fan of the blue-eyed, blonde-haired babes myself, Walston  ;D

To get back to the football part of the game, anyone know why the yards per carry average for Hammes is low right now?  It is early in the season, but I have always thought he was a good back with a tough running style.  Are teams stacking the box trying to make Wartburg beat them with the QB play?

Van Rees showed a lot of athletic ability in the game last year.  Looks like he is still making big plays in the run game.

Wartburg passing game the last two years against Luther were comprised with a lot of glorified runs (short slants, screens, shovel passes, etc).  Since they are only 17-38 this year so far, are they trying to go down the field a little bit more?

With what I have seen on the message board it is too bad that this game isn't played at the end of the season.
Iowa Conference Football Champions in 1932, 1935, 1938, 1941, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1963, 1970, 1971, 1978

Da One

The biggest reason Wartburg had more yards last year was the starting field position for each team.  Wartburg's avg. start was on their own 25, while Luther's was at their 49 = short field for the Norse.  The final was 33-24 with the Knights last score coming with 29 sec. left in the game.  This is why I said "the game was not as close as the score indicated."  These are the facts not an opinion.  Hammes is a very good back and he may have made a difference in the outcome of the game.  But he didn't play.  Just like two years ago when Sherden didn't play RB against the Knights.  You didn't here any Luther fans saying we would have be Wartburg if he would have.  Turnovers and injuries are a part of the game.  No question the Knights have a tremendous home field advantage.  I think the veteran Norse will be ready for the tough road test (that is an opinion).

P.S.  the Norse have beaten the Knights in JV games the last two years.  If that is a sign of things to come those 15 years of dominance are nearing an end.

Not sure why the UD-Loras rivalry is quiet this time....UD did beat them after 20 odd years of losing! Being a UD grad married to a Loras grad, I felt SOOOOOOOOOOO much better after that game.....I think UD pulls it out, Loras can't match UD's speed or athleticism.
Last year at the UD-Loras game, 3-5 Loras guys sat in the UD section and talked smack the WHOLE game..almost had 2 fights, the cops actually came and sat by them....but after the game, they RAN out of there so fast, it was hillarious!! I dont have any UD-Loras football stories, but basketball was another story..I remember going after a loose ball, falling into the portable stands under the far basket, and getting punched like hell....and the battery that was thrown at us when we were coming out of the stairway at Loras..or the UD high school chants..we had a player that had some legal issues concerning under age females...he heard it ALL GAME. Not sure about the other rivalries, but UD and Loras people don't like each other at all..I lost a job due to the fact that the guy interviewing me was from Loras

Wanna make digs against a Wartburg education?  Make sure you're using actual words when you do it.  "Deflamatory" is not a word.  Congratulations.

For my part, I love the Wartburg-Luther rivalry.  I'm glad the schools have so much to argue about.  But lets not assume that its only been Wartburg students performing the pranks over the years.  Its just that Wartburg students have had the upper hand in the prank dept. over the last decade.  See the flyer drop, the Homecoming parade, etc.  But don't forget about Luther students letting a live pig run around the Knights Gym floor during a basketball game in the mid-80's.

And if you want to talk about inflamatory incidents, how about a bunch of Luther students showing up to a basketball game at Wartburg with "F--- Wartburg" written across the headbands they were wearing.  We happened to be broadcasting that night's games live on Wartburg TV and we couldn't use the camera near those students at all during the men's game because Luther students would walk in front of the camera with their obscenity-emblazoned headbands.  Plus, they repeatedly groped the female that was running said camera.  Classy.

As far as the painting incident goes, as far as I know, neither school's security found any evidence of opposing students doing the wrongdoing.  Probably just someone that wanted to stir things up in the rivalry and did the painting on both campuses.

With the amount of freshmen and sophomores getting varsity minutes the last 2 years for Wartburg, I'm not worried about JV scores.
As I'm sure is the case at Luther-There is little to no preparation that goes into JV game.

I was actually thinking discriminatory and/or derogatory and got messed up, but I am glad someone corrected it.  If you read my post about the pranks you would have noticed that I mentioned when the rivalry resorts to slurs and vandalism that I have problems with it.  F--- Wartburg headbands is not creative.  And it draws negative attention to the rivalry.  Pranks=good.  Vandalism=bad.  Vulgar language on headbands=bad.  Derogatory remarks=bad.

p.s.--I took my english credits at another school, so you can't blame Luther on that one.
Go Norse!!!

All this silly talk about headbands and vulgar language is making me fall asleep.  Can we get back on the topic of football and who is good, who is bad, and that sort of thing?

Looking at the IIAC standings along with nonconference records and I would say the league is down from last year, and it was average last year!  What is up with the lack of talent in this league?  I don't think there is a team in this league that would scare anybody outside of Iowa.

Busch Light

A rivalry is only as good as the fans.  The Luther-Wartburg game would not be as big of a deal if the fans weren't so excited for it.  That being said, some people get the sensitivity bug when it comes to pranks, t-shirts, chants, etc..      Remember these are college age kids doing these activities and 95% of the time they are harmless fun.

I don't know if I would agree with that -- Central and Coe have a perfect non-conference schedule. Central (in the first week) took on UST from the MIAC, a historically tough conference. Coe's record is comparable. It's way to early in the season to talk playoff berths; however, the IIAC has sent a couple of representatives to post-season action, where we have been competitive. It would be huge to see an IIAC school (Central or otherwise) make it past the first couple rounds in the playoffs. (Correct me if I am wrong, but the deepest run we have made in the playoffs recently was Central's "Miracle in the Mud" season....) Regardless, success in the post season will translate to respect for the conference overall, even if some of our teams prove to be weaker.

Speaking only for Central's opponents, I don't think that UST (or Bethel, a rivalry from years past) or Hope would want to lost to the Dutch again this year....

K-Mack

I did the knowledge on the IIAC playoffs in the expanded era (since '99) in the preseason. I think I have that notebook in my work bag.

I remember it being an impressive record of getting teams in, but not very far. I think the Miracle vs. Linfield was the best.

Here goes, with year, regular season record and round IIAC team was knocked out:

99
Wartburg 10-0
Central 9-1 ... both out in second round(?)

00
Central 10-0 ... quarterfinals

01
Central 9-1 ... lost to PLU in 2nd round

02
Wartburg 9-1
Coe 9-1 ... both won, then lost in second round

03
Wartburg 10-0, 2nd round
Simpson 9-1, 1st round (St. Norbert)

04
Wartburg 8-2 .... 1st round (Conc-Moorhead)

05
Central 9-1
Coe 9-1 ... each lost in first round

Now, what this all means is debatable. I think the years you have had two teams its been worthy, for the most part, and most of the teams that knock IIAC teams out are St. John's, PLU, Linfield and similar types that went very far.

I could flesh this out with the actual teams they lost to pretty easily, but I'm feeling rather lazy at the moment, and most of you probably know or remember anyway.

I'm divided on the rivalry stuff, a lot of it is fun to me, actually just about all of it, but then again I never had my team van's tires slashed (R-MC --> H-SC basketball) or my car vandalized like Luther-Wartburg, etc., so it's easy for me to say.

Who dominates the IIAC b-ball rivalries?

My picks for the week

I think to make my conference predictions pan out, I added in some upsets, like Luther beating Wartburg. Not sure if I'm gonna be man enough to stick to that. Let me see here.

Simpson   at Cornell
Buena Vista   at No. 15 Coe
Dubuque   at Loras
Luther   at Wartburg
Central vs. Weight Room/Relaxing weekend

Give me Simpson in a low scoring one, like 15-10.

I'll take Coe 35-14.

I'm on the Dubuque bandwagon (man, this is roomy. I think I'll stretch out) ... 21-16. Loras could definitely make me look bad here though.

And in the big game ... I'm gutless. Wartburg 31, Luther 28.
