Picks for the week...

Wartburg over Augsburg in a laugher
Simpson over BVU (I just watched Chronicles of Narnia last night, and I can't see Beavers putting up much of a fight)
Loras over Cornell
UD over Coe (I absolutely can't believe how good both teams from Dubuque are this year!  And i use good in the relative sense)
Central raining on Luther's parade (courtesy WTV) and TROUNCING the Norse.  Luther will put up a good fight during pre-game, but at the bottom of the conference and Central coming in with that tough of a defense... no chance.

Iowa over Purdue after the Hawks end the Drew Tate experiment and go for Jake Christensen to carry them to a BCS bowl.

ISU over Nebraska after the NCAA changes the rules just for this game to allow the Clones to have 7 DBs on the field, 4 LBs and 5 down linemen.  Even after the rule change, this is a squeaker... 71-70 in regulation after ISU goes for 2 in the waning moments of the game because they couldn't stand a second OT loss to the Huskers in as many years.  When asked to comment after the game, McCarney says something about telling his team to "win one for the Gipper".  His players misunderstand, thinks he says "win one for the Schipper", all put on their clogs and rumble into the endzone for the 2 pt. conversion.  After the comment, Mac runs into the UNLV coach who is STILL asking for a review of the last play of their game.  As the UNLV coach runs after Mac, Jason Berryman pops out of nowhere and assaults the UNLV coach.  Even though this is his third offense, ISU uses the Pollard clause and reinstates Berryman to the team to lead the Clones to their first outright conference championship since the Missouri Valley days.

Wow... I'm spent... looks to be a GREAT weekend for football.

Good Luck to all IIAC teams this weekend!! Hopefully the rams fire up and get a W. I sure hope Mills has the rust out now that he has practiced two full weeks. Can any Central fans tell me how the younger and I guess the youngest baethke is doing at Central? All three of those kids are good athletes so I'm guessing he is traveling at least?

He's back from the grave!!!  I have a slightly different name, but the user is all the same!  Do any of you remember me?

Dang! For a second there I thought DowJone$ had returned. Welcome back Orange and Black, but it's the linguistic stylings of the legendary Dubuque poster we all crave.
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Tone,
While I agree that a page of small-college football would be infinitely more interesting than all the gory details about some "awesome" pimple-face who can't even recognize an out route, the realities are that everyone went to high school and can relate in some fashion (or so the thinking goes) while very few of us go to D3 schools. Unless your program really hits on a local nerve (See, Collegeville/St. Cloud, Minn.), it just ain't happenin.

Not that it should stop you from trying.

As far as Title IX, I actually did a lot of research on that back when I took Multi-Cultral Events (that just sounds liberal, doesn't it?) as an elective. I'm not a fan of anything that creates opportunity at the expense of others' opportunity.

As far as keepin' it left, I'm OK with being fiscally conservative, but I can't get down with the politics of fear and greed, even if my own church is trying to sell me on it. It's nice to have some balance on the other side so we all don't have to subsist on granola and rock the Birkenstocks, but seriously ... can you do something about Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly so us forward-thinkers don't get the impression all conservatives are nutbags? Thaaaaaanks.

I'm sorry, were we talking football here?

Yeah, the NESCAC is nuts, and totally hypocritical since all of their other sports can play in the postseason, and often go all the way to the championship. But I wrote about it last Nov. 10 from Trinity, and Gennaro Leo at least made it make sense to me.

Now you guys see why I have to stay off the boards? I've alienated the right-wingers and the NESCAC in a matter of minutes.

Probably the same reason they never let me work drive Thru at Mickey D's. They just knew I was gonna say something to someone ...

I'll make my picks tomorrow, although should I even bother coming back after last week's drubbing?

Pat,

Thank you for correcting what was truly a collateral mistake (D.C. / NYC). I'm glad to see your Google search engine works.

I believe a page or two once a week is reasonable.  There has to be over 20 small college football programs in Iowa. Right now the register gives more space for garbage-pail eight-man high school football then they do for small college football programs and games featuring teams with a combined 200 years of football history. I am not asking for a full two pages devoted to each football program, weekly, what I am asking, is for them to feature one small college team, once a week - something more than a box score blurb. Also, I ask IOWA posters, those who read the Register daily (not just Google it after reading a d3football post) and tell me whether I am all washed up or whether its time to grab a gun and start a revolution O.A.R. style!

It does no good to complain to management if you think alone, that is why I was tossing out some feelers to see whether I am all alone on this one, I guess I am.  I am glad the makers of d3football did not think so small otherwise you would not be reading this right now.

K-Mack: digesting liberal garble is the reason why half the intercollegiate wrestling programs and many intercollegiate football programs no longer exist (Title IX), no thanks.

(gives hippy a shower)

Another thing, what conference does not allow any non-conference play - not even an exception for the playoffs? I cannot think of any reason (any logical one) for such a rule and I also cannot think of any reason any quality player would want to compete in that conference.

NESCAC, WTF?

Whoa.

I should bother coming back.

Makes sense. No one saw the Loras one coming, and few picked Dubuque either, right?

Had to have Central. I wasn't rooting while listening or anything, but it did occur to me afterward that it helped my picks.

Picks for the week:  better rebound from a rough week last week.
**Simpson with a week's rest over a struggling BV team.
**Loras over Cornell in the no brainer of the week. (*nevous because I said the same thing last week about Coe v. Loras)
**Coe rebounds with authority over UD.  UD too streaky to put two great games together.
**Luther over Central in a huge upset.  Maybe I am dillusional, but Luther has to be better than their record and I look for Central to have a let down.

Good article on UD Belleus in todays IC  Press Citizen's Hawk Central section on-line

http://www.hawkcentral.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061006/HAWKS0104/610060325/1053/HAWKS

He does admit he lost acidemic focus.

"But Belleus couldn't return for his senior year because of poor grades.

"I lost my focus on the school part," Belleus said. "(Dubuque) was the only place I could be. A lot of teams didn't want me because of my grades. The coaches up here, they took a chance on me."

I hope he earns a degree and does somthing in life that he could have done with his athletic ability if he stayed focused on the "student" part of student athlete.

When/who was the last D1 transfer WC had for football?
Aaron Kampman on Coach Ed Thomas
I believe his greatest legacy comes not in how many football games he won or lost but in the fact that he was a committed follower of Jesus Christ.

That was a very good article!

"Intentional or not, clicking on the 'Team History' link on the Dubuque Web site takes you to a blank page.

Dubuque hasn't won an Iowa Conference football title since 1980. They haven't had a winning season since 1987 (6-5). In Brautigam's first five years with the Spartans, he has a 7-43 record, including a 3-39 mark in the IIAC.

But so far this season Dubuque is 3-2, and 2-1 in the IIAC. Both win totals are the best in at least six years."

Luther has 11 titles, but the last one was in 1978.  The Norse tab on the school website should read "Past Traditions" until they can finally get another.

Iowa Conference Football Champions in 1932, 1935, 1938, 1941, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1963, 1970, 1971, 1978

Alfie...

What's goin on homes?  You keeping Papa Jack in line, or are he and Janeen getting CRAZY about the approaching gala?  Is today Ausflug in Wartburg land, or has that come and gone already?  Leave it to Rohle Oh-lay to put it off til the cold months are upon us.

You and Jeff gonna make it down here before the 2nd frost bites to get in a round of golf, or have you retired the sticks for the season?
