question to anyone present at the Luther - Simpson game. What was your honest opinion of the pearson fumble that led to a touchback? It sounded over the radio that Hefty was upset with the officials call, and that is out of character. By no means is that an excuse and none will be provided, as a loss is a loss.

Spartan111

So I was in attendance for the Loras/BV game today, just wanted to share a few thoughts ........ I have some family ties with BV so don't hate fellow Spartans 8)

If I were any team playing Loras ......

I would load up the box and make them pass the ball, their QB doesn't impress me much, struggles when pressured as their O-line is kinda weak

I would attack their corners, #27??????? got burnt three times for about 40,50, and 70 yards.  The corners do not attack well when thrown at, curls can be used against them all day.

Hall might be the best defensive player in the conference, kid doesn't kid the credit he deserves IMO.  Made plays all over the field, coaches at Loras need to find a way to use his abilities more.

Some of the offensive calls on the Loras side were very questionable .....

The Beavers hit the big play today and Loras did not.  Basically came down to the three big pass plays......

Congrats to all the Winners today!

I honestly had a bad angle, but the entire Luther OL was just going nuts at the time and on the sidelines after the play.  Hefty spent a lot of time a good distance out on the field yelling after the play.

Big play in the game, but the inability of the Luther Defense to stop weaker offenses has been one of the many issues with Norse Football this year.  They played better defense against Central and Coe than they have against Dubuque, Simpson, and B.V.  Simpson and B.V. hadn't had a lot of success on offense this year until they played the Norse.

The passing stats were really more meaningless in this game than any other Norse game this year.  Simpson was milking the clock after they got up 28-7 in the 2nd half.

Luther ran the ball right down the field on the 1st drive of the game to go up 7-0, then after having success running the ball went back to throwing it all the time even though the wind, rain, and such weren't the best conditions.  Both teams looked like they could have run the ball at will for most of the 1st half.

Congrats to all of the IIAC winners this week, but I especially wanted to say something about both Loras and B.V. as both teams have salvaged rough starts to the season.  I'm sure the game today was memorable for both sides in Dubuque.

Loras started out 0-2 while B.V. started out 0-3.  Both teams have shown resolve, made quality decisions, and displayed mental toughness when other teams might have never recovered.

I was in the camp that wondered how Wartburg would respond this year with the questions surrounding the offense.  The offense has been rough at times, but the Knight program has clearly shown that they can still win big league games and play defense.  Running the ball, playing great defense, and making plays when it counts still is what great programs are built on.

The Norse will tie the longest conference losing streak in school history if they lose next week against Cornell.  Luther lost 7 games in a row in league play between the 1949-50 seasons.  Not exactly the kind of history that the seniors and coaching staff wanted to make this year.

Before anyone goes crowning Central as conference champs, consider this possible scenario:

Central loses to Loras and at Coe and beats Simpson to finish 6-2.
Wartburg loses at BV and wins vs. Cornell and Dubuque to finish 6-2.
Coe wins out against Central and Cornell to finish 6-2.
BV wins out vs Wartburg and at Dubuque to finish 6-2.
Loras wins out at Cental and Simpson and vs Luther to finish 6-2.

8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

After taking in both local high schools' games on Thursday and Friday night, Mrs. Warthog & I decided to stay away from the Coe/Wartburg game on Saturday.  It appears we weren't the only ones.  The picture on the Wartburg web-site shows two people bundled up sitting on an empty set of bleachers.  I then went to the box score and saw there were only 1500 people at the game.  What happened?  I thought I was the only fair weather fan.

A holdover thought from the previous Saturday.   What is with this cheerleading the Loras team does?  They remind me of a ninth grade girls softball team.  A coordinated pad slapping, hand clapping cheer for "Defense - Defense" doesn't seem like the type of thing a football team would normally do.  First Loras ruins their football field with soccer lines, now they make cheerleaders out of their football team.  Bad omens are coming out of Dubuque.

That's just scary  :-\

What would it come down to if that actually happened????

Wartburg's chances might have improved to make the playoffs after Bethel beat St. Olaf on Saturday.  St. John's is still undefeated and the favorite to win the MIAC, but St. Olaf looked to me to be the team that might also make the playoffs with a 9-1 record.

Bethel and St. Thomas both have one league loss, but both teams play St. John's still this season.

Floyd,

I agree with you.  Wartburg's win helped them greatly.  They may need some help from ST Johns to get in.  If ST Johns would stumble that would leave it to open to ST Johns maybe being the runner up in the MIAC and that would hurt Wartburg and Central for that matter to get an at large bid.

With three games to go it is way to early to talk about a lock on the IIAC championship.  With Charlie's prediction or scenario then you would have to look at BV or Loras with the AQ and the rest sitting home.

Dutchfan04- I did not get my picks in this week.  I couldn't get wireless internet in the hotel I was staying in.  I know, I should have had them in before Friday.  I was contemplating calling Walston and have him type my picks in but he was busy with his own game.  I'll make sure to have them in early this week.

Congrats to the Knights on a big win in CR.  We'll take an ugly win over a pretty loss anyday.  If the Knights can win out I think they would have a great shot at an at-large.  And who knows what might happen to the Dutch.

Long shot for all of that to fall into place, but if it did, that would mean that BV would get the automatic bid to the playoffs.  The "Rose Bowl Rule" would eliminate teams until there is a tie that can be broken by head-to-head results.  Given that Coe won the AQ last year, they would be the first to go.  From there Central and Wartburg would each be taken out of the equation, given their making the playoffs in '05 and '04, respectively.  BV won their head-to-head meeting with Loras, so the Beavers would get the automatic berth.  In that scenario, I would find it very hard to believe that the conference would get at second team in.

Have you all checked out Ryan Coleman's photos of Central at Cornell (http://www.pictureprints.net/albums.php?gallery=1368) and Wartburg at Coe (http://www.pictureprints.net/albums.php?gallery=1363)? Look also for Keith's column later this week.
