News from the AP sideline is that Montezuma took the lead early 14-0... with only 4 total yards.  AP fumbled at their 4 to set up the first TD, and Montezuma blocked a punt on the ensuing drive and recovered it in the endzone for the other.  From there, it was all downhill.

I like this game about showing meagerness in Simpson's athletic program.  I seem to remember someone saying how great it was that Simpson were ranked #9 in the nation in the wrestling polls.  How many IIAC teams is that behind again?  Wrestling is not a good thing to brag about unless your name is Wartburg in the IIAC.  Everyone else is wrestling for 2nd place.

It's a good thing that one of the best high school basketball coaches in Iowa history graced the halls of Simpson... otherwise, I would go on.  Can anyone who DOESN'T know me answer who this coach is?

Storm-what?

D squared- I have no idea who you are but I am going to guess Bobby Sandquist?

Wart- I agree- nobody is happy with 4th or 5th place overall finishes. I think Stormchaser meant this year particularlty. And with record enrollment 4 years straight and a president that supports athletics- I think things will continue to improve at Simpson. This year the women in particular are off to a great start. Now, the men's teams need to get there also.

I beleive in the conference wrestling pecking order after Wartburg @ #1, Luther is SOLID #2  and everyone else going for third.

I thought Muary Wier went to  University of IA!

D^2, I have no idea who you are, posting behind an anonymous message board name. I think one of the most successful coaches in the state up until the last couple years is that guy who smokes in the gym up in East Wa-loo.

Tough one to take last night.
First of all, my car gives up the ghost on the way to school, (in the market now)
Then, I hate to complain too much, but we were without our leading rusher going into the game, Our #1 reciever and safety tried to hobble onto the field but couldn't, Our Outside LB was out, and our MLB got a concussion about 5 minutes into the game. You outgain a team 365-144 but your fullback who hasn't fumbled all year long coughs up 2 (those were the ones we lost, there were plenty more) and your senior qb tosses 4 picks. That being said we had 4 possessions in the last 6 minutes of the ball game, 3 ended on picks and scored on the other, and ended the game with the ball. Really had no business being in the game, but still had a chance at the end. Not a bad season for not being ranked at the beginning and then being upset in what one outlet called the "upset of the decade" Went 8-2 with 3 starters back from last year and 2 of those guys weren't playing the same position they did last year. I guess that's what you get working with 16,17, and 18 year old kids.
Then I get back in the car and find out my Falcons lose as well. I may just go to bed for the rest of the week.

CURRENT coach, Alfred!!!  And yes... Murray Wier was great and went to Iowa... but only 1 state title???

This may be the dumbest question for the history of the board, but I just wanted to know what criteria Karma is based off of?  And if it is just a "voting" type of thing, where is it at?

Pollock... that sucks about the Maroon.  You were in the game that late because you were playing a 6-3 team from the west side of the state.  There hasn't been a dominant team west of the Des Moines metro area since Bret Meyer was the signal caller at Atlantic, so it's no surprise that SC East wouldn't have given you all much trouble on any given night.  So here's my real question for you... Maroon and Falcon football is done for the year, ISU is staring an 0-fer in the face........ are you going to follow the Knights for the rest of the year, or are you going to follow younger brother's team as they go through the rest of their season?

I've been following the Knights all year. As for Winona, I'm happy if they win, and listen to my brother bitch when they lose, that's about it.
I still bleed Orange. (except for 1 Friday night a year)

SC East was a 5-4 team coming into the night. I think the sports talk guys on KXNO had something to do with it ;) They were ripping on the IAHSAA saying that it was a crime that a 5-4 team would get into the playoffs and a team like Roosevelt (7-2) was sitting at home.

I know this is an IIAC board, but can someone tell me why the SE Polk - Ankeny game will be played at Ankeny. SE Polk beat the Hawks in the regular season and they have a better record.

The Show

SE Polk hosted a game last night, Ankeny did not.  That's why.

If both hosted a 1st round game, then it goes by the alphabet rule and this year it is in reverse order.  That's how we (JSPC) host Hampton-Dumont this coming week.

The Show,

You beat me to it.  You are correct in how they determine home field for the playoffs.  Keeps some teams from hosting all the games and it evens out the home field advantage.  That way the IAHSAA can't be blamed for always giving the home field to one team or another.  It also rewards some teams for earning the home field.

From my perspective following Luther Wrestling, I think it is pretty easy for many Decorah fans to take pride in the fact that the Norse have finished in the top-5 in the country in 5 of the last 6 years.  The strongest point of the Iowa Conference in recent years has been wrestling, and that is based both on how dominant Wartburg is and how deep the league is for good wrestlers.

Knight Wrestling is clearly the best sports program on the Wartburg campus and clearly the best sports program in the Iowa Conference.

Augsburg dominates up in the MIAC and on the national level, but the MIAC is barely a wrestling league since only a few schools offer the sport and only St. John's is occasionally ranked in the 20s.  IIAC schools like Luther have actually improved and grown even as Wartburg has gotten better and better.

I'm starting to sound like McCarney here, but seeing them play last night it was tough to believe they were barely above .500. SOmeone had mentioned it was the first game they played with their whole lineup all year. At full strength they were pretty darn good. I don't think we played a game at full strength all year. While I don't think they will beat Valley, the Tigers are without their top 2 runningbacks for Friday's game. They will be starting a soph who played in his first Varsity game in the first round of the playoffs.

Wally,
I feel you pain. I + E'waloo grads everywhere have not liked SE East for almost 35 yrs. They were the ones to break the 56 game winning streak.

Your error was thinking like Danny Mac, you should have taken the Lou Holtz mantra that every team was the greatest thing since the 1960's Packers. For yoy youngin's they were to the NFL what the Patriots are today.

D2 - I knew MWeir was wrong but he was the best coach, even w/out more than 1 title. The one was was due to moving the neighbor kid Joey to varsity for tourney. ;) Remember  w'loo had 3 public high schools at the end and the Sailors were 3X bigger then they are now.

I know homes... and truthfully, state champion team #2 was full of freakish athletes!  I don't quite know that Larry Lenton could've kept up with the pace of the game today... just my $.02 worth!  My dad and Frank said that Mr. Weir struck the fear of God into you... isn't that what good coaches are supposed to do?  I wonder how Mr. Weir would've fared wtih today's game/players....

D2 . Wier would do fine. He was called "the Witch Doctor". A guy would be limpin' all day with bad ankle but after a talk from Wier in the lcoker room, he'd be able to go full speed. Something about playing time/ motivation.
