I was a fan of Jim Miller (old track coach) and his American History class.  I had him during his last year before retirement, and he had such a buttload of vacation days, we'd have class 4 days/week (he never chose to get a sub), and we'd watch WWI, WWII and Vietnam documentaries that he'd critique while we watched them.  Then he'd ask me at least once a week if my dad was Frank or Kendall, and he'd tell me the story at least once per month about how he told my dad that he needed to drive a stake into the ground next to him to see if he was really moving his @$$ on the track.  Ewaloo had a bumper crop of outstanding coaches in the 70's!!  Wier, Miller, Kittelson... that'd make any high school program great!

OK board... I'm done with my high school memories.  Back on track to IIAC business...

WH... I know you are still in a Maroon funk, but where in the world are the lines for the week?  Get on that mess!!  As for the small talk about other sports on this board, any thoughts on the Knights making it 4/5 wrestling titles this year?  I hear they are absolutely stacked again... almost to the extent of the '02/'03 team!!  Correct me if I'm wrong here sportsknight...

For what its worth..a friend of mine just recenlty transfered out of Simpson because he wasnt a big fan of the way things were handled in terms of playing time.  He told me that it was like high school in the fact that if you have the right last name you had a pretty good chance of playing.

Long time reader, first time poster here.  After reading this post I just HAD to say something.  This sounds like one of the most classic reasons for quitting- "The coach doesn't know what he's doing, I should be playing".  To even suggest that Neimann or the new O-coordinator would play somebody based on their last name is ridiculous.  Neither of these guys are very far removed from a D-1 coaching job, and a family name gets you nowhere in D-1...same goes for D-3.  These guys want to win and they will put the best players on the field to do that.  The storm is obviously down this year, but lets not be thinking that the coaching staff would stoop to this level.  Kid couldn't hack it....get over it and don't make excuses.

Tret... Good to see you making your voice heard!  Did Todd Thomas get ahold of you about tomorrow night?

Welcome to the board, Redmen. I like your style. Obviously a throwback from the original mascot years. I remember seeing photos of the past decades of SC football. Classic uniforms that looked just like the KC Chiefs, except the arrowhead on the helmet obviously had a SC inside of it.

I hadn't made any comments on the SC transfer issue because I assumed everyone would poke holes in the claim, which everyone did so well.

Although the offense has struggled this year, I have heard great things about the new offensive coordinator, as a coach and recruiter. With the right kids in the program, I really think the current coaching staff can and will be very successful at Simpson.

D*D-
Did I make it that obvious who I was or what??  I won't be in town tomorrow night as I will be in I-town for the weekend.

Stormchaser-
I  am not a fan of all this political correctness and wish the Storm would have kept the original mascot...oh well, that's the way it goes now days.  Hope Neimann and company can get things back on track for the final 2 games and have something to look forward to for next season.

Since when has a 6:00 am date with tailgating stopped you from partying in a different city the night before?  If this were canoe-ing season, I know for a fact that you'd be on board!  Sorry that I won't be able to cheer on the Hawks against the Purple squad tomorrow... don't think they'll need my help, truthfully.  Keep me posted if you hear about spare tickets for next weekend's game, though.

Can't really help you out there D.  Since I'm out of school and in the "real world" now, I don't have as much knowledge of the Wartburg sports as I once did.  I know the wrestlers lost some key guys from last year, but Milboy's cupboard is never bare.  Not knowing much about Luther or Auggie, I'm gonna say those three will be at the top, but I have no idea in what order.

K-Mack,

Another great ATN I do enjoy your articles.  Don't forget your picks.  You have done pretty well in keeping up with them.

sportsknight, don't forget about UW-LaCrosse.  They return quite a few as well.  It has been Auggie, Wartburg, Luther and UWL at the top for quite a while now.

I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Fair point, especially with former Wartburg assistant Dave Malacek as the new head coach at UWL.

K-Mack,

I have a question about region games.  What defines a regional game.  Looking at the QOWI it says that UWW is 7-0 in region games 8-0 overall.  I know AP is not in D-3 so that makes one non region game.  But how does the MHB game qualify as a region game.

The definition expanded this season:

Silly, ain't it?

Basically, the emphasis on region games is to limit travel and keep costs down across the board in D3, but for West Region football, some teams couldn't get anyone to schedule them, or had to go 1,500 miles for a D3 game, sometimes non-D3 ... so they opened up the regional definition so you can at least schedule a D3 ... but now practically everyone is in-region.

I think I gave Luther some bulletin board material last week, and they paid me back with a thorough thrashing, looking like we all thought they would from Day One vs. Cornell.

I'm sure it was all about me.

Dutchie,
My goal is definitely to make all the picks, even though I'm fading a little bit vs. the Walston and the other Dutch leading the picks.

Thanks for the kind words about ATN, sometimes I've spent all week writing it in bits and pieces and sometimes I kind of rush through it, so I don't really have a sense of how good or not good it is until people react. I will say this though, it's definitely a lot easier (and more fun) to give your take when you've actually been somewhere the week before.

I remember to do my picks like so: Finish ATN on or around Weds. night/Thurs. morning, meaning free time at work Thursday goes to setting all 7 fantasy lineups (I don't work Fridays and no telling how much I'll be around a computer on the weekend), picking in 2 NFL pools and my IIAC picks (officially, for the NCAA, no gambling is taking place  ;) )

So, without further ado:

Not sure how to tackle the big one this week. For the IIAC's sake, I'm thinking you want a 10-0 Central and a 9-1 Wartburg with an OT loss to the Dutch. Anecdotally, no way you can deny the second team. On the flipside, a Coe win and a 9-1 Central means Wartburg looks even more equal to Central, and Coe misses out by virtue of the Loras loss.

As we saw last Saturday, there are still no gimmes. OK, NOW without further ado (because that was some ado right there)

Central 14, Coe 12: Low-scoring, tight game, could've gone either way but Central wins. Sounds familiar.

Dubuque 28, Buena Vista 27: The Beavers are coming on strong, but I might as well get off at the last stop of the Spartans bandwagon. A .500 record clinched ... you don't say!

Wartburg 34, Cornell 17: Tell the Ram I'm really sorry.

Loras 19, Simpson 7: Storm still trying to figure out the offense.

My scores have it looking like a good week to be a field goal kicker  ;D

Picks for the week:

UD over BV   I think the Spartan offense will have a game.  UD takes a big step this year.

Central over Coe   The Dutch are just to strong.

Wartburg over Cornell   Hmmmmmm

Loras over Simpson  Fans in Indianola forget about the 12:00 start time and show up at half.  Too little too late.
